Over-Booked [91] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

I wasn’t expecting to post another Over-Booked so soon, but I’ve received some exciting books in the mail and I wanted to share them. Ah, the dilemma of having too much to read! Here is my latest haul:

Physical books for review:

First up, a trio of books courtesy of Orbit Books! Rosewater by Tade Thompson. I’ll admit I’ve already read, reviewed and loved the original edition published by Apex Books, but I couldn’t resist requesting this beautiful reissue. There is supposedly extra content in this edition so I’m looking forward to a reread.

Charmcaster by Sebastien de Castell. This is book #3 in de Castell’s wonderful Spellslinger series. I’m a little behind but I hope to catch up soon:-)

Finally from Orbit, The Sisters of the Winter Wood by Rena Rossner. I’m thrilled to have a beautiful finished copy, and although this has already been released, I’ll most likely read it in October. Thank you Orbit!

My biggest surprise last week was a finished copy of Vengeful by V.E. Schwab. Huge thanks to Tor Books for the surprise, I definitely wasn’t expecting this! I hope to read in the next week or so.

A surprise arrived from Delacorte Press, The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein. I actually had my eye on this book and requested it on NetGalley but was never approved (or declined!), so I’m happy to have a copy.

The Vampire Knife by Jack Henseleit is Book #1 in The Witching Hours, a new middle grade series. I don’t normally read MG by this certainly arrived in time for spooky October, so I’d love to give it a try soon! Big thanks to Little, Brown Books for Young Readers.

Digital books for review:

I’m not sure what happened. Suddenly I’ve been getting a lot of review requests from horror authors (mostly self published, which I don’t read as a rule), and the only thing I can think of is that it’s happening because I participated in the Instagram #LadiesofHorrorFiction challenge last month. Or maybe because Bark’s Book Nonsense has created a list of horror review bloggers and authors are now coming out of the woodworks! And don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled that my blog was added to her list, especially since I’m not “strictly” a horror reviewer. In any case, I’ve felt my resolve not to read self-published books slipping a bit, and I did indeed agree to read these two books. (Although technically neither of these are self-published.)

Author C.T. Phipps asked if I’d read his latest, Straight Outta Fangton, and I immediately agreed because a) I’ve seen his name around and b) I am totally in the mood for a humorous vampire novel! Big thanks to C.T. for the review copy:-D

Clark Casey contacted me back in April and asked if I’d like to read his book Dawn in Damnation, but at the time I said no because I was so overwhelmed. I was happy when he tried again a few months later, and I agreed to read it. Hey, October is just around the corner and this will be perfect. Thank you for your persistence, Clark!

Purchased:

I finally remembered that I wanted to buy a copy of The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell, so I got a copy from Amazon this week. However, as you can see from the photo, some terrible, book-hating employee at Amazon completely bent the cover back! My skin was twitching when I saw it, but I figure it’s not worth trying to send back. Hey I’ve send damaged books from Amazon back before, but I’m letting this one slide. Life lesson: quit buying books from Amazon!

On the flip side of that, I bought my second book from Parnasuss Books, The Wildlands by Abby Geni. I’m on a literary kick lately (one of my loves before I started blogging and somehow got pushed into the science fiction/fantasy/horror corner—not that I don’t want to read those things, I just miss literary fiction now and then.) This is a family drama/thriller that revolves around a hurricane, and it sounds AMAZING.

And that’s my book haul! Are you planning on reading any of these books?

Thanks Daniela, I am going to try to read The Silent Companions in October, I think it will be super spooky!

  2. I’d love to buy The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein since it’s coming out next week but I put myself on a book buying ban. I have to buy a new Kindle and it’s not exactly cheap so *sobs*

  3. Awesome haul! My request for Elizabeth Frankenstein is also still sitting there pending on NG. Glad to know it wasn’t just me who was forgotten lol. That’s awesome you got a copy of Vengeful, I know a lot of people are excited for that one!

I’m listening to the audiobook for Straight Outta Fangton right now! And I’ve enjoyed both books in the Dawn in Damnation series so far 🙂 I hope you like them too!

I’m glad to hear about Dawn in Damnation, and Straight Outta Fangton seems like it’s going to be fun:-)

  4. I was so happy when the Orbit books finally showed! I finished and loved Charmcaster already, and I just started Rosewater because I remember how much you loved it. At first I didn’t think it would be my kind of read, but I’m about half way through now and I’m really enjoying it!

I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I thought it was different from other alien/first contact stories I’ve read, and I loved the Nigerian setting:-)

  5. Wow! I like your book haul. The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein? By Kiersten White? Yes, please. Why haven’t I heard of it? Is it available for request? I’m gonna check it out. C.T. Phipps I haven’t heard of either. Are you sure Amazon is at fault? It could have happened during transit? Was the box smashed too? just wondering. Canada Post sucks for not delivering packages.

  6. “Ah, the dilemma of having too much to read! ”

Story of my life, lol. 🙂
A very excited book haul, I’m excited for a few of these! The Silent Companions looks great. Darn that amazon employee! They really do have no care for books, I often get mine with bent corners. Ugh.

  7. You have some of the best hauls. I can’t wait to read the Elizabeth Frankenstein book and I’m going to have to look for Straight Out of Fangton. It looks awesome. How awful that Amazon damaged that book so bad. Seriously, the workers must have no idea how neurotic we book lovers can be!
