The Friday Face-Off: Icicles/Snow

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: “In winter with warm tears I’ll melt the snow.” – a cover featuring icicles or snow.

I didn’t have any trouble coming up with a book for this week’s theme, since The Terror by Dan Simmons immediately leaped to mind when I saw what the theme was. I read this book back before I started blogging but it still remains one of my top ten favorite horror stories ever. It’s so atmospheric, and Simmons is brilliant at creating different layers of horror. Here are a selection of covers I like:

Little, Brown and Company, 2006 (hardcover) | Little, Brown and Company 2009 (paperback)

Subterranean Press 2009 | Chinese edition 2014

Russian edition 2007 | Bantam TV series tie-in edition 2018

OK, I did not even know there was a TV series. Has anyone seen it yet? I actually like all of these, that’s why I chose them. I even like the TV tie-in edition, for some reason. Normally I would love the Subterranean Press edition, since they do wonderful work, but I’m not crazy about the title font on this one. I guess my overall favorite will have to be the Little, Brown and Company paperback edition. I love the ship on the cover and I think the design is really good.

Which one do you like?

  1. I love the idea of showcasing a book based on the covers. I quite like the Subterranean Press edition – I like the darker colours. I’m not much of a horror reader (massive wimp here!) but I’m looking at expanding my reading comfort zone and always willing to take the recommendations of someone who prefers the genre, so I may have to look into The Terror

  2. You know, I actually like the Russian cover the best. There’s just something about it. Mr. Barb and I tried watching the TV show and while it wasn’t bad, it was a slow burn, and he didn’t like it and I didn’t care enough about it to continue on either at that point. I can handle slow-burns in books, but not TV so much and that’s what it was. Maybe you should check it out though! When I saw this week’s theme, I immediately thought of Snowblind…probably since I finally read it this year πŸ™‚

  3. I love your choice – I’m going to go and check this book out right away – and agree with your cover choice as it stood out to me immediately.

  4. This is a great choice of book – and while I like your favourite – I love the Russian edition. That one really makes me shiver! This week’s theme has produced a wonderful crop of covers:)).

  5. I have a soft spot for the first cover because that’s the one I own! And oh yes, I barely watch TV these days but when I heard about the AMC Terror series I definitely set the DVR each week and followed it. If you enjoyed the book, I think you’ll like it too. There are difference from the novel, and it’s a little slower to start, but it’s intensely atmospheric and I think the actors all did a fantastic job!

  6. I like the Little brown one the best I think. The hardcover one. Followed by the Subterranean Press one and the Little Brown paperback cover. The Subterranean Press one I kind like with them setting off across the ice, with torches- that’s kinda atmospheric. As for the show, it’s pretty good- I’m up to episode 5 but still have to watch the rest.

  7. As much as I hate TV/movie tie-in editions, this one looks refreshing! I knew about the show, but I haven’t seen it. I’d definitely want to check out this book out first though! πŸ˜€ And that Chinese edition is somewhat mesmerizing, although it doesn’t convey the same emotions as the other covers! :O

  8. Ooh, what a perfect choice! I have a copy of the Little, Brown hardcover and I am rather partial to it, but that paperback one is also pretty neat. The Sub Press one is also a bit surprising with the title font choice–I like the image, though. The Russian edition is really pretty cool, also! Nice book choice for this one!
