Over-Booked [79] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

So, I’ve been sort of absent this past week, mostly due to my daughter’s Holiday Spectacular choir show last weekend, which literally sucked up all my time last week. Plus I was busy all weekend which is when I usually work on reviews and blog posts for the coming week. Also, if I haven’t been visiting and commenting on all your blogs lately I sincerely apologize! I’ve been trying my best but it’s that time of year when life gets crazy. I’m also super proud because my daughter got the coveted Silent Night solo in the show this year, and if you’re interested you can watch her performance here at 1:25:45.

Anyway, on to the new books! It’s been a month (?) since my last book haul post, but luckily things aren’t too out of control. I’m so excited for each and every one of these:

Physical books for review:

It’s a Christmas miracle, everyone…I actually won a Goodreads giveaway! I think the last one I won was just about a year ago, and this time I’ve won a book that I’m really looking forward to, The Sky is Yours by Chandler Klang Smith.

I’m also super excited to receive a copy of Black Star Renegades by Michael Moreci. I was approved on NetGalley, but I’m happy to have a physical ARC. I plan on reading this in the next couple of weeks.

Tempests and Slaughter by Tamora Pierce was a very nice surprise! I might have entered a giveaway but I honestly don’t remember. In any case, I’m excited to read this. It’s been years since I read anything by Pierce and I’m looking forward to this!

Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft. I requested this from Orbit and I’m so happy to have it in my hands! It’s getting awesome reviews already, and I believe the second book in the series comes out only a couple of months after its release.

Finally, thanks to Tor for a finished copy of Kill All Angels by Robert Brockway. I’m sorry to say I’m a bit behind with this series and I haven’t yet read The Empty Ones. I’ll have to catch up soon, because I really enjoyed the first book!

Big thanks to Tor Books, Orbit, Hogarth, Random House and St. Martin’s Press!

Purchased:

Just a couple of purchases lately, but really good ones. First, my Indigogo reward for Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s new novella, Prime Meridian, came just today, and it’s a beautiful little book! I pledged a level that also gave me a copy of She Walks in Shadows, an anthology edited by Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles. The stories revolve around the Lovecraft mythos, and I can’t wait to dive in!

I also got my monthly PageHabit Science Fiction Box, which contained a copy of David Drake’s The Spark, which I am not familiar with. But it looks like it could be good, if I have time I’ll definitely check it out. The box also came with a couple of bookish goodies.

Digital books for review:

Unbury Carol by Josh Malerman. I was really excited when I got the approval from NetGalley! I have yet to read Malerman, but I couldn’t resist this creepy-sounding story. Big thanks to Del Rey:-)

Outpost by W. Michael Gear. I listed this book in my Twelve 2018 Adult Sci Fi Books I Can’t Wait to Read during Sci-Fi Month, and I’m thrilled to have a digital copy in hand! Thank you Daw Books!

Corpse Cold: New American Folklore by John Brhel and Joseph Sullivan. I’m very hesitant when authors/publishers I don’t know contact me to review their books, but I broke down TWICE this past week and accepted a couple of horror titles that I just couldn’t resist. This is one of them, and although I haven’t checked it out yet, John tells me there are also illustrations by Chad Wehrle. Thank you John!

One of my most HIGHLY anticipated books of 2018 is Christina Henry’s next book, The Mermaid. It sounds like a bit of a departure from her last few dark and blood-soaked stories, but it’s Henry so I’m very excited! Thanks to Berkley:-D

Finally, I received another horror anthology by a writer who contacted my blog recently, Perfect Little Stitches by Deborah Sheldon. I believe Deborah is an Australian author and she’s been nominated for some awards. I’m so curious to check out her stories, and the cover is GORGEOUS! Thank you Deb!

And that’s my latest book haul! Let me know if you’re planning on reading any of these:-D

  1. What a lot of lovely, lovely books. I’m still waiting, fingers crossed, to see if I’ll be approved for Black Star Renegades.
Huge congratulations to your daughter – what a lovely voice. You must be so proud – what a packed audience and she didn’t look the slightest big nervous! A fabulous start to your Christmas:)).

She does like to change it up! Which just goes to show how talented she is if she can pull off so many different genres/styles.

  2. Only heard of one of those books so I hope you enjoy them all! I had thought about getting Mermaid because I liked Lost Boys but I just wasn’t sure from the sound of it so can’t wait to hear some thoughts on that one and then I probably wish I got it…lol. 🙂

    • Tammy

I’m a little worried about The Mermaid, because it seems like it might be “too nice.” Not sure that makes sense, but I love Henry’s dark stories. We’ll see!

  3. I remember that my daughter was always thrilled when she got a solo part in HS, Congrats to your daughter, that is fabulous for her. A lot of wonderful books you have for this haul, I hope you enjoy them all.

I hope to read Black Star Renegades in the next week or so. My reading plans for December have completely fallen off the tracks, I guess I’m busier than I thought I would be:-)

Thanks Greg:-) The Sky is Yours looks way better in person, my photo really washed out all the neon colors for some reason.

I’m trying not to get too stressed this year, I mean it’s inevitable but there’s nothing I can do to make the stress less, so I’m just trying to enjoy the season instead of complaining, lol!

  4. Wait, you haven’t read Senlin Ascends yet??? Last year I raved about it for months! It’s such a good book! Can’t wait for your review. I’m so glad it’s finally getting the due attention it should be getting 🙂 I’m sure you’ll enjoy it loads. Just in case… my review of Senlin Ascends

And it’s totally a super busy season! I also haven’t been able to catch up with everyone 🙂 I hope this next week is calmer for the both of us. Have a great week 🙂

You must have read Senlin Ascends when it was self-published? I don’t read self pub books, but I’m so happy that the good ones get noticed like this one did. I can’t wait to read it!

      • Yeah, I did, I found it on some “underappreciated gems” list and bought it 🙂 it’s not like it got better when it was “properly” published, after all… It was just as good to begin with. I didn’t even know it was self-pub, actually – it had a wonderful cover and it had great reviews. I’m really so glad it came out into the bigger waters! I really hope it gets all the attention it deserves now.

  5. Tempests & Slaughter is one I’m looking forward to as well. Though I might hold off on that for a while, since I still have some of Pierce’s older Tortall novels still to read. I’m hoping to binge-finish her Trickster’s Duology this year, actually.

I got some early Christmas presents this past weekend, and a few of them were books! Here are the new additions:

Vicious by V.E. Schwab (which I’m planning to start as soon as I finish my current read!)
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
    Coraline by Neil Gaiman
Fade Out by Nova Ren Suma

    • Tammy

Oooh, I hope you enjoy Vicious! It remains one of my all time favorite books, although not everyone agrees with me. It’s also getting a cool new cover for the rerelease before the sequel comes out next year, maybe that’s the one you have?

  6. So I think your entire digital haul is either already on my wishlist of headed there. I am still craving horror despite it being the Christmas season and am going to have to pick up some soon. At least my current read is a thriller.

Hope you are staying safe amidst the wildfires in California. They seem to be shifting all the time.

Thanks Barb, I’m lucky to be down in the ‘burbs and not anywhere near the brush where the fires are burning. Still, it’s very scary.

So many great looking books, though none of them are currently on my to read list. I like the cover of Outpost and I’m curious to hear more about that one.

  8. What a phenomenal solo performance!!!! 😮 You must be super duper proud of her!!

Love the books you got there! I’ve only heard great things about Senlin Ascends too. Hope you enjoy it. 😀
