Waiting on Wednesday [242] – GODSGRAVE by Jay Kristoff

Waiting on Wednesday is the brainchild of Breaking the Spine, although Jill isn’t hosting this meme anymore. In any case, I will continue to post Waiting on Wednesdays, simply because it’s one of my favorite posts to do each week:-D

Hurrah for cover reveals! Jay was tweeting about the cover reveal for Godsgrave for weeks, and we finally got to see it a few days ago. I loved Nevernight, the first book in his YA/Not really YA series, and I’m very excited for September to roll around:

A ruthless young assassin continues her journey for revenge in this new epic fantasy from New York Times bestselling author Jay Kristoff.

Assassin Mia Corvere has found her place among the Blades of Our Lady of Blessed Murder, but many in the Red Church ministry think she’s far from earned it. Plying her bloody trade in a backwater of the Republic, she’s no closer to ending Consul Scaeva and Cardinal Duomo, or avenging her familia. And after a deadly confrontation with an old enemy, Mia begins to suspect the motives of the Red Church itself.

When it’s announced that Scaeva and Duomo will be making a rare public appearance at the conclusion of the grand games in Godsgrave, Mia defies the Church and sells herself to a gladiatorial collegium for a chance to finally end them. Upon the sands of the arena, Mia finds new allies, bitter rivals, and more questions about her strange affinity for the shadows. But as conspiracies unfold within the collegium walls, and the body count rises, Mia will be forced to choose between loyalty and revenge, and uncover a secret that could change the very face of her world.

Set in the world of Nevernight, which Publishers Weekly called “absorbing in its complexity and bold in its bloodiness,” Godsgrave will continue to thrill and satisfy fantasy fans everywhere.

Godsgrave (The Nevernight Chronicles #2) by Jay Kristoff. Releases in September 2017 from Thomas Dunne Books. I love this cover, and I think it goes so well with the Nevernight cover.  I’m pretty damn excited to continue Mia’s story.

Are you reading this series? Let me know what you’re waiting on:-D

I tried the arc of Nevernight, and it just wasn’t clicking with me. It could have been one of those times where I wanted to read something else, but forced myself to at least try it. Either way, I keep seeing so much raving over on Twitter about Jay and this series, so I bought Nevernight and will try again. Especially since the second sounds so darn good, I feel like I’m missing out 🙂

I do know that Kristoff’s writing style isn’t for everyone, so it could just be it’s not “your” style. But I love this series, it’s very emotional and has lots of action.

The characters are older than teens, if I remember correctly, and there are some very graphic sex scenes in the first book. So I felt like it was more adult than YA.

I hadn’t heard that about him, but I know some readers don’t like his writing style – too “flowery.” But I’m a big fan, what can I say?

  2. I read Nevernight with great interest as I’m a sucker for those coming-of-age school-based stories – though NN took that in a far gorier direction than the one I was expecting:). It will be interesting to see where this series goes next. Thank you for sharing.

Yes, it had a lot more graphic violence than I was expecting, but I’ve read Kristoff’s other series so it didn’t surprise me too much:-)
