Welcome to What’s on my Plate, a post I write each month to let you know (and to remind myself!) what books I’ll be reading, as well as other posts I have planned. April went by in a flash, right? I did pretty well with my April review books, but there are a few I just couldn’t get to. I had some technical issues with my blog where I lost about two weeks worth of posts and had to re-write them. But I made it through and I’m ready to start fresh. By the end of May, school will be over and I’ll technically have a junior and a senior in high school! Crazy…
So many great books are coming out in May, and once again I’ve gone and over-extended myself. In addition to reviews, I have a couple of cool author interviews coming up and some giveaways as well. Plus, I’m going through my books and realizing I have lots of double copies, so I may finally get around to giving those away. As usual, surprises always pop up, and so this list is probably not the final one. Here’s what I have planned for May:
Review books:
Night Speed by Chris Howard. A “drug” book! (You know how I love that theme!). This looks like fun, and has some pretty good reviews on Goodreads.
Warrior Witch by Danielle L. Jensen. This is the finale to Jensen’s popular series, and although I didn’t care much for book two, I’m hoping she ends on a strong note.
The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley. I don’t know much about this, only that I requested it from Edelweiss a LONG time ago and just recently was approved.
The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi. I believe the release date was moved up on this book, I thought it was a May release but it actually came out this past week. Oops! Oh well, I can’t wait to read it, I’ve seen nothing but awesome reviews!
Central Station by Lavie Tidhar. This sounds like all kinds of awesome! I hope to read this in the next week or so.
The Arrival of Missives by Aliya Whiteley. Some of you may have read Whiteley’s The Beauty, which got lots of attention last year. I wasn’t completely on board with it, but I am curious to see what she’s done for her second book.
Devil and the Bluebird by Jennifer Mason-Black. This is a YA has received rave reviews, and I’m anxious to check it out. Making a deal with the devil never gets old for me!
Freeze/Thaw by Chris Bucholz. I do love stories that take place in freezing cold locations, and this one sounds pretty scary!
Roses and Rot by Kat Howard. This is probably my most anticipated read this month!
My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. I can’t wait to read the follow-up to Hendrix’s hysterically funny Horrorstör.
The Voodoo Killings by Kristi Charish. I had a bunch of fun with Charish’s Owl and the Japanese Circus, and this is the start to a new series.
Company Town by Madeline Ashby. I’ve had this on my “to read” list for years?? It changed publishers at some point, but luckily it’s finally coming out!
The City’s Son by Tom Pollock. After I read this, I will be doing an author interview. This month is the U.S. release of this book that has been out in the UK for a while now.
Author Interviews/Excerpts:
On Tuesday May 3rd, Geoffrey Girard visits the blog (for the second time!) as I grill him about his new short story collection, first communions. I also have a giveaway of a SIGNED COPY! Stop by and check it out!
On May 10th, I’m featuring an excerpt and giveaway of J.D. Horn’s latest, Jilo. I read the first two books in Horn’s Witching Savannah series (and loved them!), and Jilo is a spin-off of those books, featuring one of my favorite characters, Jilo. I’m not sure I’ll have time to read Jilo, but I’m happy to feature an excerpt of the book and a giveaway!
And finally, I hope to post an interview with Philip Reeve this month. No set date yet, but stand by! Railhead is seriously my FAVORITE BOOK OF 2016 so far. I am NOT kidding.
Giveaways:
In addition to the above, it’s back to my monthly Book Review Giveaway, which begins on May 15th. You can win your choice of one of the books I reviewed in March or April. Don’t miss it!
So that’s my crazy month, how’s yours looking?
Looks like a great month planned. I need to read “Devil and the Bluebird” and “My Best Friend’s Exorcism.” I am dying to get my hands on “Rot and Ruin” and “The Voodoo Killings.” Plus the next (Maybe last) book in Charlaine Harris’ Midnight Texas series comes out Tuesday and I don’t know how long I can wait to pick it up. Last week was awful for me as I was traveling back and forth to a neighboring town for a conference all week (1 1/2 hours each way makes for a long day!) I did manage to hit a bookstore Friday during lunch and snagged the new magazine releases featuring Prince and a new anthology edited by Joe Hill – ” Best American Science Fiction.” Have you heard anything about it or read it? Congrats on your kids finishing another year.
I just looked up the Best American SF you mentioned, and yes, that came out last fall. That was the first year they published it, so I hope it does well. Now that you reminded me, I’m going to buy a copy one of these days! I’m sorry you had such a tough week, hopefully this week will be better:-)
Curious about The Loney. I’ve heard good things. Also, My Best Friend’s Exorcism just sounds like a great idea.
If My Best Friend’s Exorcism is half as funny as Horrorstor, it will be a bunch of fun:-)
I’ve been really curious about Central Station, am hoping to hear some positive feedback to make me figure out how to fit it in with the books I’m already planning to read! 🙂

I’ve seen some good reviews, and I know the publisher is eager to get more of them so I’m hoping to read this by pub date, which is the 10th.
I also plan on reading Central Station! 🙂 I would also like to read Roses and Rot because the synopsis sounds great!
Roses and Rot just seems so different from my usual reads, so I’m hoping I enjoy the change of pace!
Ooooooh, The Star-Touched Queen! I’ve heard so many good things about that book, so I’d love to know your thoughts on that too, since I’d like to read it. 🙂
Every review of it I’ve read has been gushing, so I’m very excited to get to it:-)
Some of those look really interesting! 🙂
I remember Night Speed and Devil and the Bluebird from you WoWs!! 🙂 Very curious about the Bluebird.
And, I just read your review for First Communions. Look forward that interview and giveaway 😉
I just finished listening to the audiobook of The Star-Touched Queen and it is so wonderful! I’m also looking forward to diving into Voodoo Killings as well!

I was also disappointed with book 2 in Danielle Jensen’s series – I hope the series is redeemed in the last book! And looking forward to the Star Touched Queen as well. Happy reading!

The cover for Night Speed is really eye-catching, and I like the sound of The Voodoo Killings. Thanks for highlighting them!
Ugh, that’s brutal that you lost two weeks’ worth of posts! I’m reading The Voodoo Killings right now and I’m loving it, hopefully you like it as much as you did Charish’s Owl books. The Star Touched Queen has been getting amazing buzz too!
