Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine, and is a fun way to share upcoming books that you’re excited about with other bloggers and readers. Gregory Maguire did awesome things with The Wizard of Oz tale, and now it looks like he’s going to tackle Alice in Wonderland:
After Alice by Gregory Maguire. Releases October 27 2015 from William Morrow. Yes, there are lots of takes on the Alice in Wonderland story, but I imagine in the hands of Maguire it will be something quite different. Here’s the description from Goodreads:
From the multi-million-copy bestselling author of Wicked comes a magical new twist on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Lewis’s Carroll’s beloved classic
When Alice toppled down the rabbit-hole 150 years ago, she found a Wonderland as rife with inconsistent rules and abrasive egos as the world she left behind. But what of that world? How did 1860s Oxford react to Alice’s disappearance?
In this brilliant new work of fiction, Gregory Maguire turns his dazzling imagination to the question of underworlds, undergrounds, underpinnings—and understandings old and new, offering an inventive spin on Carroll’s enduring tale. Ada, a friend of Alice’s mentioned briefly in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, is off to visit her friend, but arrives a moment too late—and tumbles down the rabbit hole herself.
Ada brings to Wonderland her own imperfect apprehension of cause and effect as she embarks on an odyssey to find Alice and see her safely home from this surreal world below the world. If Euridyce can ever be returned to the arms of Orpheus, or Lazarus can be raised from the tomb, perhaps Alice can be returned to life. Either way, everything that happens next is “After Alice.”
Let me know what you’re waiting on this week:-D
I have yet read Maguire’s Oz books, despite my best intentions, but I could really get into a good Wonderland reimagining.
The only Maguire book I’ve read so far is his take on the ugly stepsister, and I really enjoyed it. I have a bunch of his others on my tbr shelf, but I’m so on board for After Alice. I was so psyched (and pleasantly surprised) to pick it up at BEA/BookCon.

I went through a phase where I read nothing but Gregory Maguire, but that was some years ago now – it’s good to hear what he is up to recently, and I will definitely have to check this out.

The Alice in the Wonderland re-imaginings/retellings I’ve enjoyed have been the ones which paint the story dark and creepy. I don’t think this is going to be like that, but I’m curious to find out more where Maguire is going to take it.

Sounds like it could be good, I do prefer dark and creepy or perhaps a bit naughty (like Pinborough’s fairytale retellings) 🙂 But I’m curious to see what others think of it.

It sounds interesting. I enjoy retellings. I hope it’s not as political as the Oz books. I liked some of his other books better than those. Looking forward to it.

I really like when characters and stories are reimagined and this one sounds interesting. And has it already been 150 years since Alice in Wonderland came out? Wow…

I don’t know…I read Wicked and HATED it. I don’t usually hate books, so even though I love Alice I think I’ll pass on this one. Happy reading though!

I have never read anything by Gregory Maguire, but I think it’s time to correct that mistake. This one sounds delicious.
BTW It’s available on Edelweiss. 😉

Ooh cool! Going to check right now, thanks!
Have yet to read anything by Gregory Maguire but really loving the sound of this one!
I just saw this in a publisher catalogue, and I immediately wanted to read it! I think it’s great to have a twist on a fairytale retelling, which seems to be Maguire’s forte.
I hope you enjoy it when you get around to reading it, Tammy!
As for what I am waiting on … The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater. It comes out March 1 next year, so I still have a while to wait for it, haha!
