The nitty-gritty: While I loved Cosby’s gritty and violent revenge scenario, I had some issues with the overall plot and dialog, ultimately making this a mixed bag for me. That was the thing about violence. When you went looking for it you definitely were going to find it. It just wouldn’t be at a time […]
The nitty-gritty: Short and powerful, In the River is a tiny, horrific masterpiece. I can’t believe I haven’t read anything by Jeremy Robert Johnson before now, but In the River might be the perfect place to start. This is a fairly short novella and can be read in a matter of hours, but it packs […]
The nitty-gritty: King blends horror and crime into a fast-paced thriller, with a good balance of creep, humor and emotion. This is the first time I’ve reviewed a new Stephen King book on this blog, can you believe it? I read Later over the course of a day, something I rarely get to do, and […]
The nitty-gritty: Shocking, brutal, funny, and heartbreaking, Mongrels is my new favorite werewolf story. This is the way werewolf stories go. Never any proof. Just a story that keeps changing, like it’s twisting back on itself, biting its own stomach to chew the poison out. I’m making an attempt to catch up with some of […]
The nitty-gritty: Beautifully written and carefully plotted, The Glass Hotel was an unusual and emotional read. Like many other readers, I loved Station Eleven and have been curious to see what Emily St. John Mandel would do next. Even though I didn’t have a review copy of The Glass Hotel, I was determined to read […]
The nitty-gritty: The zombie apocalypse meets Watership Down in Kira Jane Buxton’s glorious, emotional and hysterically funny debut. This book will change the way you think about animals, life and death, and may even give you a deeper appreciation of Cheetos® I fluttered my gular, hating the part of me that they recognized, desperately wanting […]
I mean, what can I say about All Systems Red, that hasn’t already been said, several years and thousands of reviews later? Obviously I loved it. I loved Murderbot. And I loved the other characters as well. I loved the pacing and the tension and wow this story was so much more exciting than I […]
The nitty-gritty: Odd and unsettling, Michael Wehunt’s stories are glimpses into Twilight Zone-like worlds where horror is just another everyday occurrence. Michael Wehunt is a new-to-me author, but cruising around blogs and social media sites over the years, I kept seeing his name pop up. When Lesley Conner at Apex Books invited me to participate […]
The nitty-gritty: An eerie and atmospheric Gothic ghost story with layers upon layers of secrets, gorgeously written. The Silent Companions was a wonderful break from review books this month, especially since it’s October and I couldn’t have picked a more perfect scary read. Wow, this book surprised me! I have to admit it takes a […]
The nitty-gritty: A dangerous and thrilling tale that grips the reader from the first page and never lets up. If one thing is certain, you can usually count on seasoned and experienced writers to deliver a great story, and I’m happy to report, like so many other reviewers, that The Cruel Prince is a winner. […]
