The nitty-gritty: Higher stakes, terrifying alien robots, and plenty of human drama as well, I thoroughly enjoyed this follow-up to Sleeping Giants. I had a blast reading Sleeping Giants last year, and despite some issues with the format, I enjoyed Neuvel’s original take on the alien invasion story. If you haven’t read Sleeping Giants, the […]
The nitty-gritty: Disturbing, violent, weird and hallucinatory. This story is tough to handle. How can I even begin to describe Waggoner? He looked and sounded exactly like me. He was also a fourteen-year-old schoolboy. When Mum had laid out my uniform on the bed that he and I had started sharing a week before, he […]
The nitty-gritty: A fast-paced adventure in space with some cool world-building ideas, but with too much of an emphasis on the romance, it lost me in the second half. Color me conflicted. I read lots of enthusiastic reviews of Shadow Run before I dove in, and based on its high ratings on Goodreads, I was […]
It’s April! In Southern California, the weather often skips right over spring and goes directly to summer, but these days it sure feels like spring here, it’s been beautiful. I hope that wherever you live, spring is starting to show itself! March wasn’t the best reading month I’ve ever had:-/ Not sure what happened, but […]
As I have in the past couple of years, I’ve joined Worlds Without End’s 2017 Women of Genre Fiction Reading Challenge. I’m hoping to read twenty-four books by new-to-me women authors in the genres of science fiction and fantasy. I thought I’d do a quick “end of the first quarter” check-in to see how it’s […]
You guys, I’m so excited to tell you about a new Kickstarter campaign that starts TODAY from one of my favorite small UK publishers, Unsung Stories. 2084 takes the classic Orwell novel 1984 and re-imagines it from today’s social and political viewpoint. 2084 is a collection of eleven original speculative fiction stories that take […]
The nitty-gritty: Clever, exciting, irreverent, hysterically funny and surprisingly emotional, Kings of the Wyld is a must-read for EVERYONE. “Castia needs fighters!” [Gabe] shouted above the thunder of stamping feet. “It needs great and glorious bands!” he yelled over the percussive crash of sword and shield. “Castia needs heroes!” he roared, and they roared back […]

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer. I’m excited to share a couple of highly anticipated titles that came my way in the last two weeks! Throw in a couple of […]
The nitty-gritty: Biting humor and politics collide in Scalzi’s latest, a fast-paced trip through space. Within two days, Kiva was within five million marks of going into the black for the trip. “I’m a fucking financial genius,” she said, to Captain Blinnikka, back on the Yes, Sir. “Or you’re war profiteering,” Blinnikka said. “I’m not […]
The nitty-gritty: Another stellar entry in The Arcadia Project series, with plenty of magic, action, danger and some seriously wonderful characterizations. Once again, Mishell Baker has knocked it out of the park, with her follow-up to Borderline. Book two in The Arcadia Project series picks up a few months after the last book, and Baker […]
