Buffy’s Corner 1/12/25 – Looking at the Week Ahead

Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer:-D

It’s been a rough week here in Southern California. Although I don’t live in the heart of Los Angeles anymore, I’m only about an hour away from the horrible fires that are currently still burning, with no end in sight. Both my kids live right in the middle of a few big fires, but luckily they are OK for now. And I have so many friends that are being affected, it’s very hard to watch what’s going on from afar. I’ve checked in with a few blogger friends that I know live there, but I’m sure there are others affected that I don’t know about. If you live in the Los Angeles area, please take care!

Ironically, while the fires were raging out of control, we got our first snowfall up here in the mountains. It feels weird to talk about snow right now, but I will drop a new photo of Badger in the snow below.  I hope everyone has a good week and stays safe:-)

Upcoming reads & reviews:

Despite the stress of last week, I find myself ahead with January reviews, and I plan on posting three this week. Tomorrow look for a review of The Crash, which was a bunch of fun, if not perfect. The Way Up Is Death was very different than I expected in some ways, but very very good. And I’ll also review book #10 in Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children series, Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear. I’m currently reading Wooing the Witch Queen and loving it!

Other posts this week:

Tuesday I’m joining in Top Ten Tuesday and sharing my reading/blogging goals for 2025; and wow, the cover reveals were flying all over the place last week! So I’ll have three new books to share on Future Fiction.

In case you missed:

My posts from last week:

All the Water in the World by Eiren Caffall – Review 4.5/5 stars

Future Fiction #313

Most Anticipated Books of 2025 – First Quarter

Wake Up and Open Your Eyes by Clay Mcleod Chapman – Review 3.5/5 stars

  1. Watching the news about the fires is awful. Glad to hear you’re safe.
Looking forward to your TTT post. I haven’t made too many goals for this year, just the usual couple of challenges and a low target of 20 books to read this year.

  2. The fires are so horrific. I hope they get a handle on them soon.

Future fiction posts are so fun! I should join in at some point.

  3. “I’m only about an hour away from the horrible fires that are currently still burning, with no end in sight. Both my kids live right in the middle of a few big fires, but luckily they are OK for now.”
That’s very distressing. I had no idea you were so close…I think because you get harsh winters (I have no idea of the geography of the state, obviously :D). I hope both you and your kids will manage to stay safe, and this ordeal will end soon! Looking forward to the new reviews and reveals, as usual. Hello Badger!

The mountains I live in are very close to LA, but we aren’t in danger of the fires up here. Thanks Roberta!

  4. I think about your family each time I see the news so I’m glad to hear you all are ok right now. I hope that continues. I was just working on this coming week’s email and pondering how the LA area could use some of the snow we also received this week.

    • Tammy

That would be so cool, a freak snowfall in LA that would put out the fires (kind of like in The Wizard of Oz when they fell asleep in the poppies;-)

      Thanks Todd!

  5. Badger can have our snow! LOL Glad they’re enjoying it. And the fires just make me feel so helpless. I’ve got friends and family who are evacuated too – so scary!

    • Tammy

So true, Anne. It’s very disturbing. Every time I read a dystopian book about climate change it feels more and more real.

  6. After you had to evacuate for the last fires, I wondered how close you were! I hope your kids are staying safe as well. It’s scary to watch on the news. Badger looks adorable in the snow! If my Argyle was bigger I think he’d love the snow. Have a good week!

  7. I’ve been thinking of you and wondering if you’re being affected by the fires. It’s devastating to watch, even from Northern California. I hope your kids stay safe. Thanks for sharing the Badger picture — what a cutie! Hoping this next week is better than the last.

  8. OMG Tammy! I am glad that you are ok but so scared for your kids! It’s good that you got snow, hopefully you will be protected from the fires with the humidity.

    • Tammy

That’s what I was thinking, I don’t see how fires could start with all the snow, but I guess you never know!

  9. Last I checked there were no flames or smoke from the Palisades fire, so that’s good. That must be beautiful in the mountains with the snow! Look at cutie-pie Badger!!!

  10. I’ve been thinking about you and am glad to see you’re safe. Pros to living in the mountains, I suppose! I hope your kids continue to remain out of harm’s way. <3 It has been very hard to watch from afar what's going on. Just terrible and heartbreaking and not helped in any way by certain folks politicizing tragedy.

    • Tammy

It’s been hard to watch, but people are pulling together and helping each other out, which is so lovely to see.

  11. I am so glad your kids are safe, Tammy. These fires are so frightening! The winds are picking up again and I worry about what means for the firefighting efforts and risk of more fires. We’re on high fire risk level in Riverside County and hoping for the best.

I always enjoy seeing what you reading and this weekend it’s no different. I am glad you are enjoying Wooing the Witch Queen. I hope to read that one as well.

Have a great week, Tammy. Enjoy the snow, and I’ll be sending positive thoughts your kids’ way, hoping they (and everyone) will be safe.

    • Tammy

I didn’t realize you were in Riverside County. You are very close to me (Wrightwood). It seems the whole of Southern California is on red flag alert, and even though we have snow on the ground up here, so are we. Stay safe and take care, Wendy!

  12. I didn’t realise you had family right in the middle of the firezone:((. I profoundly hope they manage to get control of the fires soon – it looks absolutely horrific and having friends and family caught up in it must be horrible. I hope the coming week holds much better news.

I’m glad you’re enjoying Wooing the Witch Queen so much – I’ve also got an arc of it, too.

    • Tammy

I just finished Wooing the Witch Queen and loved it! Thank you for your kind words about the fires. Fingers crossed they will start to get them under control soon.

  13. For some reason I thought you were in Colorado, not California ( I think because I’ve seen you post snowy pictures), I hope the fires keep their distance from you.

Wishing you a safe and happy reading week

  14. The fires and all the coverage are breaking my heart. I feel so much for everyone displaced and put at risk as well as for all the animals who are losing their homes and fighting to survive as well. We had about 10 inches of snow over the past week or so and Saturday, it was warm enough the boys got to go out and play. I hope to post some pics this weekend. My pigskin boys do not handle cold very well! I look forward to your Wednesday post. I just finished reading Victorian Psycho and am trying to figure out what to start next.

    • Tammy

Luckily there are a lot of shelters working to take in displaced pets, I’m so relieved. I’m looking forward to your snow pictures!
