Over-Booked [199] – September Book Haul

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

I have a rather big book haul for September, and most of these books are being released by the end of the year, which means I have a lot of reading to do, lol. Oh well, things could be worse, right? Also, I have a lot of sequels in this haul, which is interesting. Here are the books I’ve received this month:

Books in the mail for review:

Starting off with four exciting books courtesy of the lovely team at Orbit Books, and three of them are sequels. Warlords of Wyrdwood by R.J. Barker is the sequel to Gods of the Wyrdwood, and I hope I can fit this in, since I loved the last book so much.

I’m slotting The Undermining of Twyla and Frank by Megan Bannen into my October reading pile. I heard nothing but good things about it!

Echo of Worlds by M.R. Carey is the second in a duology, after Infinity Gate, and came out back in June. I just received my copy and I’d love to squeeze this in soon.

Finally from Orbit, A Rose By Any Other Name by Mary McMyne is a Shakespeare inspired fantasy story.

I’m thrilled to have a copy of The Narrows by Ronald Malfi, which is a reprint of one of Malfi’s older books. Big thanks to Titan Books for the review copy:-)

From the wonderful team at Angry Robot, I am so excited to have a copy of Odd Spirits by S.T. Gibson, a prequel novella to Evocation. This is truly a work of art, with full colored end papers and a beautiful cover design. Thank you Angry Robot!

And I’m soo excited to have a copy of Grimm Curiosities by Sharon Lynn Fisher! Sharon is always so generous, and I hope to read this early before the November release date. Thank you Sharon!

I’m currently reading The Hitchcock Hotel by Stephanie Wrobel and loving it! I plan on posting a review next week. Big thanks to Berkley for this lovely finished hardcover.

These next three books are from Tor. First, Rumor Has It by Cat Rambo is the third book in her Disco Space Opera, and because I’m behind (story of my life!) and haven’t read book two yet, I may save this for Sci Fi Month in November and read both books back to back.

I’ve already read Haunt Sweet Home by Sarah Pinsker, which was good but not quite what I was expecting.

And I’m very excited to dive into The City in Glass by Nghi Vo, a beautiful hardcover novella. Thank you Tor!

With thanks to Berkley, I received This Cursed House by Del Sandeen, a Southern Gothic horror debut that sounds so good. This is an October release and I’ll be reading it soon.

Big thanks to Poisoned Pen Press for The Crash by Freida McFadden. I have never read the author before, although I know a lot of readers love her books.

Finally, Snow Drowned by Jennifer D. Lyle is a YA horror story that sounds really good. I have had good luck recently with YA horror so this should be fun. Thank you Sourcebooks!

Digital books for review:

The first three books are Orbit books I’m super excited for, and at some point I hope to get physical copies. But for now, I can read them right away! Ardent Violet and the Infinite Eye by Alex White is a sequel to a book I loved, August Kitko and the Mechas From Space. On Vicious Worlds by Bethany Jacobs is also a sequel (to These Burning Stars), and I’ve heard it’s amazing! And The Swarm by Andy Marino is a horror story about cicadas, and I’m looking forward to it!

I’m very curious about Rose/House by Arkady Martine, which I recently featured on Future Fiction. This is a story about an AI house and it sounds amazing.

I had fun with Paulette Kennedy’s last book so of course I want to read her upcoming book, The Artist of Blackberry Grange.

Polybius by Collin Armstrong looks fantastic, a story about a strange arcade game that pops up out of nowhere.

I was excited to hear from Jeremy Szal, the author of Stormblood, who contacted me to see if I’d like to read his upcoming collection of short stories, Broken Stars. Of course I said yes:-)

I was also contacted by Nick Kolakowski and offered a copy of Where the Bones Lie, a mystery set in Hollywood.

And last but not least, I was offered a copy of Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor, an author I love.

Thank you Orbit Books, Tordotcom, Lake Union Publishing, Gallery Books, Jeremy Szal, Nick Kolakowski and William Morrow:-D

Are you planning to read any of these books?

  1. Wow you got a lot of books this month. I saw the cover for Odd Spirits recently and was in awe of how stunning it is. I remember Grimm Curiosities intriguing me when you first mentioned it too. I’m also particularly interested in The Hitchcock Hotel (I did request but literally only yesterday so I doubt I’ll get it given how close the release date is) and I majorly want to read Wrywood given how much praise I’ve heard for it. I’m also really intrigued by City In Glass, especially after a recent review I’ve seen for it. But some of the others are on my TBR too. I hope you enjoy all of these and good luck getting to them all.
