Over-Booked [197] – July Book Haul

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

So far these monthly book hauls seem to be working for me, so these are all the books I received in July, including my haul from Comic Con.

Books in the mail for review:

The Unmothers by Leslie J. Anderson is out next week, so I’ll be reading it very soon. Big thanks to Quirk Books for the review copy!

I was thrilled when Christa Carmen contacted me and asked if I wanted an ARC of Beneath the Poet’s House, one of my most anticipated Fall books. I loved her last book, The Daughters of Block Island, and this sounds amazing. Thank you Christa!

With thanks to Datura Books, I received Negative Girl by Libby Cudmore. This is a “neo noir thriller” that sounds really good! It’s out next month so I’ll be reading it soon.

I was surprised to hear that Rob Hart has another book coming out this year, after LOVING Assassins Anonymous. Dark Space is cowritten with Alex Segura and is described as a sci-fi spy thriller. I can’t wait! Big thanks to Blackstone for the review copy:-)

I’m thrilled to have a copy of Asunder by Kerstin Hall, courtesy of the wonderful Tordotcom team. This is out later this month, so I hope to read it soon (I know I’m saying that a lot, lol).

Come Out, Come Out by Natalie C. Parker is being compared to the books of Andrew Joseph Smith, an author I’ve always wanted to try. This is a YA horror, and I’m really looking forward to it. Big thanks to Penguin Young Readers for the finished copy:-)

The Hollow and the Haunted by Camilla Raines sounds so good: it’s a queer paranormal mystery and the reviews so far are excellent. Huge thanks to Titan books for my ARC!

And with thanks to Orbit, I received a finished copy of How To Make A Horror Movie and Survive by Craig DiLouie, which I’ve already read and reviewed. This was so much fun!

Also from Titan I received Guillotine by Delilah S. Dawson, a horror novel promising “shocking violence”! This sounds really good:-)

Comic Con book haul:

I’ve shared this before, but here are the books in a flat lay so you can see the covers:-) I’m so excited to have a copy of Memorials by Richard Chizmar! This book is getting lots of great buzz, and it comes out later this year.

I won We Shall Be Monsters by Alyssa Wees playing a game at the Penguin Random House booth at Comic Con, and I’m so happy to have a copy of this dark fantasy:-)

The Black Hunger by Nicholas Pullen is a much anticipated October release, and it sounds like my kind of book!

Tor was giving out ARCs if you purchased a book, so I was able to grab The Devils by Joe Abercrombie. This doesn’t come out until next year, and it’s HUGE, but I’m excited to have it!

I’m also thrilled to have a copy of The Queen by Nick Cutter. This is an October release, and I’m glad to finally be reading something by this author!

I got to meet Heather Walter and get a signed ARC of The Crimson Crown! This is an August release, but technically it’s not on my August TBR. I’d like to read it if I have time, though.

Huge thanks to Del Rey, Orbit, Gallery Books and Tor for these lovely books:-D

I also got to meet Sarah Henning, and she signed an ARC of The Lies We Conjure. This is a locked room supernatural mystery, and I think it sounds fantastic! Plus, when I got my book signed, the author was giving away mood rings, so I’m wondering if rings have something to do with the story…

I’ve heard really good things about Don’t Let the Forest In by C.G. Drews, so I was very happy to pick up an ARC at the Macmilllan booth:-)

I purchased a signed copy of Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle, although I got the times mixed up and didn’t actually meet him. Oh well, I enjoyed his last book so I’d love to find time to read this.

I also got to meet Paolo Bacigalupi, who was very nice:-) He signed a finished copy of Navola for me.

Finally, it was fun to see Delilah S. Dawson, and I got a signed copy of Minecraft: Mob Squad. I will most likely give this to one of my kids:-)

Many thanks to Tor Teen, Tor Nightfire, Feiwel & Friends, & Penguin Random House:-D

Digital books for review:

Just a few new digital books this time around. Starting with a bang: Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix is a 2025 release so I won’t be reading it right away, but it’s definitely at the top of my most anticipated 2025 books list!

Servant of Earth by Sarah Hawley. This story set in the fae realm sounds really good! Sarah Hawley wrote the Glimmer Falls series, has anyone read that?

The Book of Witching by C.J. Cooke. After absolutely loving A Haunting in the Arctic, I am a C.J. Cooke fan for life:-)

We Came to Welcome You by Vincent Tirado. This psychological horror story was so tempting I had to request it. And I especially love the creepy pie on the cover…

Ghost Mother by Kelly Dwyer. The author offered me a copy of her upcoming book, which I just finished. I absolutely LOVED it! Such a great surprise, especially if you love psychological horror/ghost stories. Look for a review next week!

Big thanks to Berkley, Ace, William Morrow and Kelly Dwyer:-D

Do you plan on reading any of these?

  1. Wow that’s a lot of books, I’m sure you’ll discover a few new favourites in the mix. I love the covers for We Shall Be Monsters & Servant Of The Earth (which being about the fae I must read). I haven’t read anything by Joe Abercrombie but he’s such a major author that that’s a wonderful arc to get. And I’m very curious about Book Of The Witching. Once I’ve read a couple of my library books I’m very tempted to request it too.

  2. So… pretty small haul, eh? Ooooo the new Abercrombie! And define “huge”, please. You tend to misuse it sometimes;)

  3. Grady Hendrix comes up with such great titles. I really love that cover for Asunder. Do you happen to know the cover artist? I’ve searched online but so far haven’t found them.

  4. Whew, that’s a lot of books!!! Black Hunger looks very interesting and I definitely plan to request an ARC of that. I preordered Servant of the Earth because not only did it seem like something I’d enjoy, but I LOVE the cover art.

  5. Such a fantastic haul. I can’t help thinking your new bookshelves must be getting pretty full already?
Happy reading. I have a few of these and can’t wait to get started.
    Lynn 😀

I’m still working on shelving all my existing books. I have a feeling there will be no bookshelves left for these new ones, lol.
