Future Fiction #288 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

A dark fantasy, a psychological thriller and a horror story based on Haitian zombies, all coming at you in Spring 2025, take a look:

From the bestselling M. R. Carey comes an utterly unique and enchantingly dark epic fantasy fable like no other.

This is the tale of Once Was Willem, who – eleven hundred and some years after the death of Christ, in the kingdom that had but recently begun to call itself England – rose from the dead to defeat a great evil facing the humble village of Cosham.

Pennick for all its beauty was ever a place with a dark reputation. The forests of the Chase were said to be home to nixies and boggarts, and there was a common belief, passed down through many generations, that the castle housed an unquiet ghost of terrible and malign power. These rumours I can attest were all true; indeed they fell short of the truth by a long way . . .

Once Was Willem by M.R. Carey. Releases in March 2025 from Orbit Books. This came out of nowhere when I saw the cover reveal on Instagram, and I couldn’t be more excited! This sounds very different from Carey’s other books, and it’s giving me Between Two Fires vibes. I can hardly wait:-)

A haunted woman stalked by a serial killer confronts the horrors of fairy tales and the nightmares of real life in a breathtaking novel of psychological suspense by a Bram Stoker Award–winning author.

It started the night journalist Briar Thorne’s mother died in their rambling old mansion on Chicago’s South Side.

The nightmares of a woman in white pleading to come home, music switched on in locked rooms, and the panicked fear of being swallowed by the dark…Bri has almost convinced herself that these stirrings of dread are simply manifestations of grief and not the beyond-world of ghostly impossibilities her mother believed in. And more tangible terrors still lurk outside the decaying Victorian greystone.

A serial killer has claimed the lives of fifty-one women in the Chicago area. When Bri starts researching the murders, she meets a stranger who tells her there’s more to her sleepless nights than bad dreams—they hold the key to putting ghosts to rest and stopping a killer. But the killer has caught on and is closing in, and if Bri doesn’t answer the call of the dead soon, she’ll be walking among them.

Vanishing Daughters by Cynthia Pelayo. Releases in March 2025 from Thomas & Mercer. You guys know I loved Pelayo’s Forgotten Sisters, so I’m thrilled she has another Chicago-based book coming out next year. This sounds so good!

A bone-chilling modern horror about a Haitian American girl who uses her previously hidden zombie abilities to enact revenge on the wealthy elites who’ve caused her family pain.

Brielle Petitfour loves to cook. But with a chronically sick mother and bills to pay, becoming a chef isn’t exactly a realistic career path.

When Brielle’s mom suddenly loses her job, Brielle steps in and uses her culinary skills to earn some extra money. The rich families who love her cooking praise her use of unique flavors and textures, which keep everyone guessing what’s in Brielle’s dishes. The secret ingredient? Human flesh.

Written by the storytelling duo Maika Moulite and Maritza Moulite, The Summer I Ate the Rich is a biting, smart new horror inspired by Haitian zombie lore that scrutinizes the socioeconomic and racial inequity that is the foundation of our modern times. Just like Brielle’s clients it will have you asking: What’s for dinner?

The Summer I Ate the Rich by Maika Moulite & Maritza Moulite. Releases in April 2025 from Farrar, Straus & Giroux. Wow, this sounds like so much fun. Haitian zombie lore and cannibalism? I’m definitely keeping my eye on this book:-)

  1. I somehow haven’t read a M. R Carey book yet but at least one of his series is on my high priority TBR. And this one sounds intriguing too. I’m also curious as to how fairytales will weave into the second of these of books. Any mention of those and I’m on board.

  2. Like you, I’m very excited by the sound of Once Was Willem – thank you so much for putting this one on my radar, Tammy:)). I LOVE the title of your third offering which sounds like huge fun in a very gory way.

  3. I’ve enjoyed M. R. Carey’s books before, so am definitely interested in that one. That last title is certainly memorable, and so is the cover 😀

  4. Charlotte

The Summer I Ate the Rich sounds great, will have to remember that one for next year!
