Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
Three new gorgeous covers, three new 2024 releases, take a look:
In a world where the dead can wake and walk among us, what is truly real?
Roos Beckman has a spirit companion only she can see. Ruth—strange, corpse-like, and dead for centuries—is the only good thing in Roos’ life, which is filled with sordid backroom séances organized by her mother. That is, until wealthy young widow Agnes Knoop attends one of these séances and asks Roos to come live with her at the crumbling estate she inherited upon the death of her husband. The manor is unsettling, but the attraction between Roos and Agnes is palpable. So how does someone end up dead?
Roos is caught red-handed, but she claims a spirit is the culprit. Doctor Montague, a psychologist tasked with finding out whether Roos can be considered mentally fit to stand trial, suspects she’s created an elaborate fantasy to protect her from what really happened. But Roos knows spirits are real; she’s loved one of them. She’ll have to prove her innocence and her sanity, or lose everything.
My Darling Dreadful Thing by Johanna Van Veen. Releases in May 2024 from Poisoned Pen Press. This cover is so haunting, it’s just begging me to read it! This sounds like a rather unusual ghost story, definitely worth considering:-)
Ambitious Phi Hunter and perpetual lone wolf, Ex, finds his road to glory interrupted when a heavily pregnant runaway enlists his help to escape through the ghost-infected forest…
Ex, the youngest member of the Phi Hunters Order, has spent his life slaying the ghosts and demons of Suyoram Kingdom. While he takes great pride in his mystical trade, collecting dwindling bounties and peddling butchered spirit organs lacks the glory he craves. He’s determined to hunt down Shar-Ala, a demon of nightmares, of madness – who has eluded even Ex’s masters.
In a provincial village along the way, Arinya, a charming muay-boran champion, saves him from an ass-kicking, despite being nine months pregnant. In return, she asks him to escort her through the dangerous, spirit-filled forest, where ghosts salivate over the scent of the unborn.
But as more of Arinya’s secrets emerge, and the elusive demon nears, Ex must face dangers from both men and monsters, or lose not only the respect of the Phi Hunters, but the Hunters themselves, along with the woman he’s trying not to fall in love with.
The Last Phi Hunter by Salinee Goldenberg. Releases in April 2024 from Angry Robot. Wow, this cover is gorgeous, and I’m crossing my fingers that the story is just as good. I love that there’s a nine months pregnant character in this story:-)
The Spellshop is a cottagecore cosy fantasy following a woman’s unexpected journey through the low-stakes market of illegal spell-selling and the high-risk business of starting over . . .
Kiela has always had trouble dealing with people, and as librarian at the Great Library of Alyssium, she hasn’t had to.
She and her assistant, Caz, a sentient spider plant, have spent most of the last eleven years sequestered among the empire’s precious spellbooks, protecting the magic for the city’s elite. But a revolution is brewing and when the library goes up in flames, she and Caz steal whatever books they can and flee to the faraway island where she grew up. She’s hoping to lay low and figure out a way to survive before the revolution comes looking for her. To her dismay, in addition to a nosy—and very handsome—neighbor, she finds the town in disarray.
The empire with its magic spellbooks has slowly been draining power from the island, something that Kiela is indirectly responsible for, and now she’s determined to find a way to make things right. Opening up a spell shop comes with its own risks—the consequence of sharing magic with commoners is death. And as Kiela comes to make a place for herself among the quirky townspeople, she realizes that in order to make a life for herself, she must break down the walls she has kept so high.
The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst. Releases in July 2024 from Bramble. Cottagecore fantasy seems to be booming at the moment, and this upcoming book from Sarah Beth Durst definitely has potential. I’m loving the cute cover too! Plus, sentient spider planet:-)
I love the second cover, and the third is so pretty and cozy!

Me too, cottagecore seems to be more and more popular these days.
The cover of the Spellshop reminds me of a jigsaw puzzle I did recently! Based on how pretty the cover is, I’d be inclined to check it out!
It does look like a puzzle!
Thank you for including The Last Phi Hunter, Tammy! Honestly so excited about this book 🙂
The cover is stunning, Caroline! And the story sounds amazing:-)
The Spellshop has such a lovely cover, and cosy fantasy is one of the things I’d like to try and read more of so that’s going straight onto my TBR list 😀
Me too, I need to break up my horror reads with something more cozy:-)
I am so excited about the Sarah Beth Durst! It seems very different from her previous stuff but I just know she can pull it off!
It really does sound different, but I have faith in her:-)

I need to read more cozy fantasy:-)
I feel like all of these are outside my usual fare, yet I still find them intriguing anyway! My Darling Dreadful Thing especially sounds great (and I agree about the cover being haunting!) I agree about the very pregnant character in The Last Phi Hunter, and that cover is stunning! It might be *too* fantasy for me, but we’ll see! I shall keep it on my radar regardless. Ditto The Spellshop, really.

I know what you mean by “too” fantasy. I’m veering away from epic fantasy these days.
It’s been a while since I’ve read anything by Sarah Beth Durst, though cottagecore is new to me. 🙂
Me too. The last SBD book I read was YA, so I’m looking forward to an adult book of hers.
OK The Spellshop seems to be something I’d enjoy! You know, not too scary LOL
Perfect for you!
