Over-Booked [176] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

Last week a bunch of books I’ve been waiting for all showed up at once, so here we are with another book haul!

Books in the mail for review:

Big thanks to Andrew S. Fuller for a copy of his short story collection Constellations of Ruin. This is already released, so I am going to read it alongside some upcoming novels so I can get a review up soon. It sounds amazing!

Delicate Condition by Danielle Valentine already has some buzz, and I’m excited to start it. It’s being compared to Rosemary’s Baby among other things! With thanks to Sourcebooks Landmark for this review copy.

Mister Magic by Kiersten White was a surprise arrival. I may have entered a giveaway? Not sure, but I’m thrilled to have a copy of this book, it sounds wild. Thank you Del Rey:-D

I finally won a Goodreads giveaway, after years it seems—back in January, and the book just showed up last week, lol. It was worth the wait, though, this beautiful hardcover of Weyward by Emilia Hart, which I loved! Big thanks to St. Martin’s Press.

Starter Villain by John Scalzi sounds really funny, and I wouldn’t expect anything less from Scalzi. Big thanks to Tor for the review copy:-)

I jumped for joy when Schrader’s Chord by Scott Leeds showed up, I’m so excited for this horror story that revolves around a haunted record. Thank you Tor Nightfire!

Summer 2023 is shaping up to be an amazing, horror book-filled summer, and here’s another release that I can’t wait to check out. Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle sounds crazy! Big thanks to Tor Nightfire for the review copy:-D

Finally from Tordotcom, I received a copy of Witch King by Martha Wells. This comes out next week, and I’d love to squeeze it in soon.

Digital books for review:

I was very excited to get a very quick approval of Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett. I loved the first book, and I can’t wait to dive back into that world.

Night’s Edge by Liz Kerin is yet another summer horror release, and it’s getting some good reviews already. The sequel has already been announced as well!

With a Blighted Touch by J. Todd Kingrea is a small press horror story set in Tennessee. It sure sounds good on paper! I can’t wait to read it.

I accepted What Never Happened by Rachel Howzell Hall for review mostly because of the setting. The story takes place on Catalina Island, a small island off the coast of Southern California, a place I’ve visited many times. This sounds like fun!

With thanks to Del Rey Books, Tor Nightfire, J. Todd Kingrea and Thomas & Mercer:-D

Are you planning on reading any of these?

I’m reading so much horror in the next few months, I’m sure I’ll have some recs for you:-)

I’m trying to read other books first, but Starter Villain is definitely calling to me:-)

  1. A most excellent haul! With A Blighted Touch sounds really interesting and I am envious of all those Tor titles. I’ve resisted requesting Starter Villain because I’m planning to pick up the audiobooks

I’ve read some of the Murderbot books but that’s it. I should read more of her backlist.

  2. Ooh, Delicate Condition! I don’t watch American Horror Story, but I had heard that the new season is based on it, so I just had to check it out. Also, you got the non-weird version of Starter Villain, my ARC has the creepy cat on it!

I heard that too, about American Horror Story. I actually would prefer the final cover ARC of Starter Villain, I may have to get a finished copy too, because I love the cat:-)

I never get books from Del Rey so I was very happy to get Mister Magic. I hope you get the chance to read it too:-)

  3. I’ve requested an arc of the second Emily Wilde book and am keeping my fingers crossed. But it’s also a holiday weekend here, too. So I suspect I won’t hear anything at all until Tuesday. I’ve also got an arc for Starter Villain, which I’m really looking forward to getting to. Other than that, I’m horribly jealous of your copy of Witch King – I’m currently listening to her steampunk fantasy series on audible and absolutely loving it.

Good luck with being approved for Emily Wilde, and I hope we both loved Starter Villain:-)

It’s so hard to win them, now that there are so many people on Goodreads. I swear I used to win one every couple of months, lol.

  4. I literally just wrote and published my review for Witch King by Martha Wells, so safe to say yes it is (was) on my list to read. 😛 I’d really love to read Weyward at some point…I’ve seen a lot of good comments about it. I still need to read the first Emily Wilde book; in fact, I might put it on my June TBR, which already seems massive. 🙁
