Over-Booked [173] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

I wasn’t going to do another book haul so soon, since I just posted one two weeks ago, but a bunch of books arrived in the mail these past two weeks, and I foolishly requested some NetGalley books and was approved—oops. So here we are!

Received in the mail for review:

Big thanks to Tor Books for the first four books. First, I received a surprise copy of Looking Glass Sound by Catriona Ward from Tor Nightfire, and I’m so happy to have this. Catriona Ward’s books don’t work for everyone, but I’m always impressed by her writing skills and range of subject matter.

From Tordotcom, I received this beautiful finished hardcover of The Crane Husband by Kelly Barnhill, which I’ve already read and loved.

Also from Nightfire, I received an ARC of The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw and a lovely finished copy of Piñata by Leopold Gout. Piñata is a March release, so I’m trying to get to it this month. The Salt Grows Heavy is a vampire novella, and I’m quite excited for it!

With thanks to Wunderkind PR, I accepted a review copy of Death Watch by Stona Fitch, which is about a brand of watch that kills its wearers. Wow, I’m not sure how that works but I want to find out!

I’m eternally grateful for this copy of Infinity Gate by M.R. Carey, easily one of my most highly anticipated 2023 releases. I’ll be starting this over the weekend! Huge thanks to Orbit for the review copy:-)

And with thanks to Poisoned Pen Press, I received two surprise review copies that I’m definitely going to check out. No Child of Mine by Nichelle Giraldes looks like a horror story revolving around a pregnant woman and a curse, and Let Him In by William Friend is about a widower with two young daughters and their imaginary friend. Both sound very creepy!

Digital books for review:

Four out of five of these have already been featured here, so I feel pretty good about requesting them. I was very happy to get an invitation to download Dreambound by Dan Frey. This one sounds crazy, but in a good way:-)

I also received an invite for Alice Hoffman’s upcoming release, The Invisible Hour. I have missed a few of her recent releases, and I need to get back on track, since I love her books.

One more invite! Medusa’s Sisters by Lauren J.A. Bear isn’t my usual type of read, but it’s getting lots of praise, and I’m ready for a change!

I saw someone on Instagram who had just been approved for Schrader’s Chord by Scott Leeds, and I ran over to NetGalley to download it myself. I adore horror stories that revolve around music, there really aren’t enough of them, so I’m really excited for this one.

Last but not least, I was very excited to be approved for The Endless Vessel by Charles Soule. Soule’s stories are always unique and hard to put down, and I’m sure this is no exception!

With thanks to Del Rey Books, Atria Books, Ace, Tor Nightfire and Harper Perennial:D

Do any of these look good to you?

  1. My first glance at the cover for Death Watch had me thinking it was some kind of outer space image but then I looked closer and realized it was a wrist watch… and then I got it… 🙂 But like you, I’m not entirely sure how that’s gonna work but I am curious.

  2. That’s a fabulous haul. I stared at The Crane Husband for a while on NG, but decided not to request it to give myself some breathing room for other backlist reads. But I really do want to read it ever since I saw When We Were Dragons pop up last year (which is on my TBR). I don’t think my library has it yet, but ultimately I’ll just borrow The Crane Husband from them. Enjoy your new books!

  3. What a fabulous tranche of books, Tammy. I’ve also got a copy of Infinity Gate, which I’m very excited about!! And I love the sound of Medusa’s Sisters – I don’t have any space in my reading schedule right now, but I’m making a note to get back to it:)).

  4. Haha I also missed my last update so my roundup was for the last two weeks and looks like we got a lot of the same books! I can’t wait to start Infinity Gate later this month, and I will be looking forward to your thoughts on Death Watch. I didn’t request it because of too many books, but the premise of a killer watch did jump out at me too!
