Future Fiction #206 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

It might be cold outside, but here in bookland we’re celebrating Summer 2023 books! Here are three upcoming releases, take a look:

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Daughter of Doctor Moreau and Mexican Gothic comes a fabulous meld of Mexican horror movies and Nazi occultism: a dark thriller about the curse that haunts a legendary lost film–and awakens one woman’s hidden powers.

Montserrat has always been overlooked. She’s a talented sound editor, but she’s left out of the boys’ club running the film industry in ’90s Mexico City. And she’s all but invisible to her best friend, Tristán, a charming if faded soap opera star, though she’s been in love with him since childhood.

Then Tristán discovers his new neighbor is the cult horror director Abel Urueta, and the legendary auteur claims he can change their lives—even if his tale of a Nazi occultist imbuing magic into highly volatile silver nitrate stock sounds like sheer fantasy. The magic film was never finished, which is why, Urueta swears, his career vanished overnight. He is cursed.

Now the director wants Montserrat and Tristán to help him shoot the missing scene and lift the curse . . . but Montserrat soon notices a dark presence following her, and Tristán begins seeing the ghost of his ex-girlfriend.

As they work together to unravel the mystery of the film and the obscure occultist who once roamed their city, Montserrat and Tristán may find that sorcerers and magic are not only the stuff of movies.

Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Releases in July 2023 from Del Rey. Yay, a new Silvia Moreno-Garcia book! This sounds really good, and has so many cool elements: magic, film making, and the author’s trademark setting in Mexico. I cannot wait!

Liz Kerin’s Night’s Edge is a sun-drenched novel about how monstrous we can be to the ones we love most.

MOMS CAN REALLY SUCK.

Having a mom like Izzy meant Mia had to grow up fast. No extracurricular activities, no inviting friends over, and definitely no dating. The most important rule: tell no one of Izzy’s hunger – the one only blood can satisfy.

But Mia is tired of being her mother’s keeper. She’s in her twenties now and secretly longs for a life of her own. One where she doesn’t have to worry about anyone discovering their terrible secret, or breathing down her neck. When Mia meets rebellious musician Jade she dares to hope she’s found a way to leave her home – and her mom – behind.

It just might be Mia’s only chance of getting out alive.

NIght’s Edge by Liz Kerin. Releases in June 2023 from Tor NIghtfire. If I’m reading this right, it sounds like a vampire story. And I’m here for it! Plus I have read some great horror stories revolving around creepy mothers, and this looks like another good one.

A grieving daughter’s search for her mother becomes a journey across alternate realities in Bridge, a wildly entertaining, reality-bending new thriller from Lauren Beukes, author of the AppleTV+ smash hit The Shining Girls.

It was a game they played; the other worlds, the other lives. It was part of her mom’s grand delusions. It wasn’t real. Unless it was…

Bridget Kittinger has always been paralyzed by choices. It has a lot to do with growing up in the long shadow of her mother, Jo, a troubled neuroscientist. Jo’s obsession with one mythical object, the “dreamworm”—which she believed enabled travel to other worlds—led to their estrangement.

Now, suddenly, Jo is dead. And in packing up her home, Bridge finds a strange device buried deep in Jo’s freezer: the dreamworm. Against all odds, it actually can open the door—to all other realities, and to all other versions of herself, too. Could Bridge find who she should be in this world, by visiting the others? And could her Jo still be alive somewhere? But there’s a sinister cost to trading places, and others hunting the dreamworm who would kill to get their hands on it…

Across a thousand possible lives, from Portland to Haiti, from Argentina to the alligator-infested riverways of North Carolina, Bridge takes readers on a highly original thrill ride, pushing the boundaries of what we know about mothers and daughters, hunters and seekers, and who we each choose to be.

Bridge by Lauren Beukes. Releases in August 2023 from Mulholland Books. I’m ready for a new Beukes book, and this sounds strange and rather ambitious. I’m definitely going to consider this one:-)

  1. I haven’t read anything by Silvia Moreno-Garcia but her books are on my TBR. Silver Nitrate sounds fantastic and it’s going on my instant wishlist!

NIght’s Edge sounds like it could be a terrifying read. And yeah it does seem to be vampire related or maybe the author will surprise the readers. You never know!

Bridge looks like a really great story as well. I love the idea of a device that can open doors to other realities. It would scare me in real life but it just sounds like an awesome story. I’m curious about this one!

  2. Who would have ever thought the phrase “Moms can really suck” would end up being used with a vampire story? So perfect! 🙂

  3. Oh wow I NEED Bridge! I really enjoyed the last book I read by the author, the title escapes me at the moment, but this sounds right up my alley! Thanks for putting it on my radar! I am VERY excited for Night’s Edge as well- I think I saw it on their Instagram and knew I needed it. As for Silver Nitrate… I am going to wait and see. It might be a bit too much magic for me? Great choices as always, and as always, my TBR expands

Ok, these are all fantastic blurbs — but I think I’m going to need Night’s Edge sooon! It does sound like a vampire story, But the mother/ daughter relationship might just be nothing like I’ve read before.
