The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: Assassins
There are tons of books with assassins in them! I’ve decided to go with Christopher Buehlman’s The Blacktongue Thief, which I think has an assassin in it, lol. In any case, I found a second cover so I can do a proper “face-off.” Take a look:
Tor Books 2021 edition. I actually love both covers, but this one is my favorite. Everything about this cover is well designed and balanced, and the cover elements hint at different parts of the story.
German edition 2022. I love this as well! It’s a more traditional fantasy cover than the Tor version, and it doesn’t quite convey this quirky story which has a lot of humor in it, so it’s my second favorite cover.
Interesting how similar they are in theme and yet very different in execution. That tower must be important.
Both of them look good. Thanks for sharing!
Those are two very different cover, I like the first one best. 🙂

I’d say the German cover is my favorite!
Ooh, I should’ve participated this week, assassins is a fun topic! The Blacktongue Thief was so fun. I definitely prefer the Tor edition overall, but I agree the German one is a bit more traditional and feels very magical! It seems more serious than the story is, also.

It’s one of those books I’ve promised myself that I’ll get around to sometime soon… As for the covers – I far prefer the first one as I think the second one has a strong feel of fairytale fantasy – and I don’t get that vibe from this particular book:)). Thank you for sharing, Tammy!
I like the German cover. The first one is good as well.

Ohhh wow, I never would’ve guessed that the second cover was for this book! How intriguing! 😀
Ooh fun!
I hadn’t seen the German edition, I really like the splash of color!
I also like both but the Tor is my favourite.
Lynn 😀
