Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
It’s my 200th Future Fiction! Thanks to everyone who’s stuck with me so far. As long as writers keep writing, I’ll never run out of books to talk about. For example, these three:
Some remakes aren’t just a bad idea…they’re deadly.
Journalist Laura Warren is mid-flight to LA when she learns that the streaming series she’s about to report on is a remake of a ‘90s horror flick. A cursed ’90s horror flick. The one that she starred in—and has been running from her whole life.
As a child star, Laura was cast as the lead in The Guesthouse. She played Tammy Manners, the little girl with the terrifying gift to tell people how the Needle Man would kill them. But her big break was her last, as eight of her cast and crew mates died in mysterious ways, and the film became infamous—a cult classic of fictional horror that somehow summoned the real thing. Hoping to move on from all the negative press, Laura changed her name and her accent, dyed her hair, and moved across the Atlantic Ocean.
But some scripts don’t want to stay buried.
Soon after landing, Laura finds a yellow dress just like the one she wore in the movie. Then the words “She’s here” scratched into the wall in an actor’s trailer. And then people working on the series start dying. It’s all happening again, Laura’s worst nightmare brought to life, and she finds herself on the run with her sister and a jaded psychic, hoping to find answers—and to stay out of the Needle Man’s lethal reach.
An homage to slasher films with a fresh take on the true price of fame, Burn the Negative is a twisty thriller best read with the lights on.
Burn the Negative by Josh Winning. Releases in July 2023 from G.P. Putnam’s Sons. I am so freaking excited about this book! Josh’s book The Shadow Glass is currently in my top five favorite books of 2022, so you can imagine how giddy I am. Yes, giddy:-)
From the author of the sensational bestseller The Lost Apothecary comes a spellbinding tale about truth, illusion and the grave risks women will take to avenge the ones they love.
May mercy be upon the man who finds himself the enemy of a vengeful medium…
1873. At an abandoned château on the outskirts of Paris, a dark séance is about to take place, led by acclaimed spiritualist Vaudeline D’Allaire. Known worldwide for her talent in conjuring the spirits of murder victims to ascertain the identities of the people who killed them, she is highly sought after by widows and investigators alike.
Lenna Wickes has come to Paris to find answers about her sister’s death, but to do so, she must embrace the unknown and overcome her own logic-driven bias against the occult. When Vaudeline is beckoned to England to solve a high-profile murder, Lenna accompanies her as an understudy. But as the women team up with the powerful men of London’s exclusive Séance Society to solve the mystery, they begin to suspect that they are not merely out to solve a crime, but perhaps entangled in one themselves…
The London Séance Society by Sarah Penner. Releases in March 2023 from Park Row. I haven’t read The Lost Apothecary yet, but I’ve heard great things about it. This historical fantasy sounds so good!
Four women, four destinies – the future of King Arthur’s court…
A new, feminist retelling of the Arthurian legends
The Cleaving is an Arthurian retelling that follows the tangled stories of four women: Nimue, Ygraine, Morgana, and Guinevere, as they fight to control their own destinies amid the wars and rivalries that will determine the destiny of Britain.
The legendary epics of King Arthur and Camelot don’t tell the whole story. Chroniclers say Arthur’s mother Ygraine married the man that killed her husband. They say that Arthur’s half-sister Morgana turned to dark magic to defy him and Merlin. They say that the enchantress Nimue challenged Merlin and used her magic to outwit him. And that Arthur’s marriage to Guinevere ended in adultery, rebellion and bloodshed. So why did these women chose such dangerous paths?
As warfare and rivalries constantly challenge the king, Arthur and Merlin believe these women are destined to serve Camelot by doing as they are told. But men forget that women talk. Ygraine, Nimue, Morgana and Guinevere become friends and allies while the decisions that shape their lives are taken out of their hands. This is their untold story. Now these women have a voice.
Juliet McKenna is an expert on medieval history and warfare and brings this expertise as well as her skills as a fantasy writer to this epic standalone novel.
The Cleaving by Juliet E. McKenna. Releases in May 2023 from Angry Robot. I’ll admit the main reason I wanted to share this book is because of the cover art, which is done by Chris Panatier, who is not only an amazing author, but an amazing artist as well. Isn’t this lovely? And I also love the idea of a feminist Arthurian retelling.
I particularly love the sound of The London Séance Society, and I have a feeling I should also check The Lost Apothecary. After all, historical fantasy is always quite intriguing ❤️

I don’t read enough of it, so I hope to read both books at some point:-)
I love so much about the synopsis of Burn the Negative. A cursed ’90s horror flick, a jaded psychic, homage to slasher films. All yes to that!
I also haven’t read The Lost Apothecary yet but The London Séance Society sounds fantastic as well!
And The Cleaving sounds SO good as well. I love all things Arthurian and I love that it tangles the stories of Nimue, Ygraine, Morgana and Guinevere. SO EXCITING!

Thanks! Me too, one of my favorite things to do is find new covers:-)
Happy 200! The cleaving looks fabulous. Definitely a must get. Beautiful cover too- i almost thought it was Charles vess for a minute, very similar style.
Thanks! Chris Panatier is a double threat: author and artist:-)
200? Wow, that’s fantastic! Here’s to the next 200. 🙂 It’s been a long while since I’ve read anything by Juliet E. McKenna. I really enjoyed the first two books in her series, The Tales of Einarinn. One of these days I’d like to continue the series.
I’m eager to try her, I’ve heard such good things:-)
Burn the Negative sounds amazing and I’m excited for the new Sarah Penner book too!
I wish I could start Burn the Negative now, lol.
The cover art for The Cleaving is amazing — definitely enough to spark my interest! The plots for the other two sound great as well. Can’t wait to hear more!!
I love Chris’ art style so much:-)
Congrats on reaching 200!
McKenna’s book sounds very interesting. I’ve read some books from Guinevere’s POV and of course Morgan LeFay is in many stories but I don’t think I’ve seen Ygraine’s or Nimue’s POV before.
It could be really good, fingers crossed:-)
Ooh, I’m really looking forward to all of these! Happy 200th!
Thanks Lauren!
Oh, these sound so good! I’m really curious about The Cleaving, it sounds so interesting!
I agree, I’m definitely keeping it on my list:-)
The Cleaving is a perfect cover for the genre I think!
It really is!
These are all new to me! The third one is so pretty though!
Wow – 200, that’s certainly flown by.
And I like the sound of all three this week – and the first book has a main character called Tammy. I’ll have to try and grab a copy.
Lynn 😀
