Over-Booked [165] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

This is an “all physical, no digital” book haul, which means I’ve been staying away from NetGalley (that’s a good thing!). I have a few physical books for review, and I’ll also share some of my recent purchases, which I haven’t done in a while.

Physical books for review:

Huge thanks as always to the folks at Tor/Nightfire/Tordotcom for these first four books! I’m thrilled to have a beautiful finished hardcover of Little Eve by Catriona Ward, which I plan to start very soon.

And I can’t tell you how much I love surprises! The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz was a surprise arrival that I featured on Future Fiction. The publisher calls it both “heartwarming and thought provoking.” That’s a combo that I’m sure to enjoy:-)

Leech by Hiron Ennes is another finished hardcover from the Tor group, and I’m so excited to have this. I’ve started it already and may have a review up next week (trying hard to finish it). I’m about a third through the book and I LOVE it so far:-)

Finally, another Tor surprise, I received a copy of The Genesis of Misery by Neon Yang. I hadn’t requested this but it sure sounds like my kind of book!

OK two more surprises to go! Ha ha. Big thanks to MCD for yet another lovely finished hardcover (!) of The Hollow Kind by Andy Davidson. I’ll be reading this soon as well.

With thanks to Grand Central, I was very excited to receive an ARC of The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton. This is a December release so I have a bit of a breather before I need to read it. Still, very excited, I’ve heard good things about this author.

And for my final surprise today, huge thanks to Blackstone Publishing for another gorgeous finished hardcover, River Woman, River Demon by Jennifer Givhan. This was not even on my radar but wow, it sounds amazing!

Recent purchases:

Now onto my purchases! These are all from the last month, I guess. Some were preorders and some were just spur of the moment purchases.

First up, of course I bought a copy of Fairy Tale by Stephen King. I’ve even started reading it, although I had to set it aside in order to squeeze in some review commitments. And I love it so far! There’s a dog in the story, and please someone tell me nothing bad happens to Radar!

After loving Ronald Kelly’s memoir Southern Fried & Horrified, I immediately went looking for one of his old Zebra horror books. Fear is supposed to be one of his best, and I got this “good condition” used book (“good” is subjective. In fact it’s sort of falling apart, lol) I may try to tackle this next month.

I read and LOVED Rovers by Richard Lange (last year?) and I recently saw that his 2017 crime novel The Smack is going to be made into a movie, so I thought I’d grab it while this edition is still available.

I follow Hailey Piper on social media, and so I was all over her just released book No Gods for Drowning. I can’t wait to have some time to check it out!

I couldn’t resist having my own copy of the lovely The Coral Bones by E.J. Swift. I just love this cover, and yes I plan to read it as well:-)

Finally, one of my other favorite 2022 covers is What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher, and I really wanted my own physical copy. It’s so pretty IRL!

Have you read any of these books? Let me know!

  1. I certainly need to add King’s Fairy Tale to my TBR, since he seems to have gone back to his usual, compelling form ๐Ÿ™‚
And I’m not sure I would call the cover for What Moves the Dead “pretty”, particularly when I know what it depicts (((shudder))), but it’s certainly an intriguing one…

  2. Ooh, amazing haul! I’d love a copy of my own of What Moves the Dead — I loved the book, and the cover is amazing! The Terraformers caught my eye recently too — looking forward to hearing what you think of it. Enjoy all of these!

I’m guessing that the reason you’re staying away from NetGalley is that you have no self control:) Assuming that’s the case, well, ditto lol

The only one of those I have a copy of is the Light Pirate. Otherwise… I’ve only ever heard of one of the others. Where do you find these books??

Yep no self control;-) I stalk Edelweiss catalogs and keep a long running list of books I want to read on Goodreads:-) And follow lots of blogs and publishers!

  4. So many here I know nothing, or next to nothing about, but always looking forward to learning more. I’m very curious about Fairy Tale and could see myself purchasing it.

Little Eve has won some awards so I’m hoping I like it better than her last book, which wasn’t nearly as good as The Last House on Needless Street.
