The Contradictions Book Tag

Hey, it’s Labor Day here in the U.S., so what better time to do a fun book tag? I saw this tag on Bookforager’s blog and thought it would be fun. ( Credit to the originator of the tag: Booktuber Daniela of Only if for a Page.)

I love this genre, but I didn’t like this book:

A horror/ghost story that takes place in a school setting? Normally this would be exactly my kind of book, but Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo just didn’t work for me, unfortunately.

I rarely read this genre, but I loved this book:

Betty by Tiffany McDaniel has elements of horror, but it’s marketed as literary fiction. And while I used to read a ton of this genre, my tastes have changed over the years. I’m so glad I veered out of my lane for this book, though. It would be devastating to miss it!

I love this trope, but I didn’t like this book:

I (and many other readers) had high hopes for Book of Night by Holly Black, but it ended up being a disappointment for me. The trope is “heist,” which is usually a favorite of mine, but the plot was confusing and I couldn’t figure out the purpose of shadow magic.

I hate this trope, but I loved this book:

I’m definitely not a fan of the “suppression of women/arranged marriage/forced pregnancy” trope, but The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean turned it into something new and exciting.

I love this author, but I didn’t like this book:

I’m a big Seanan McGuire fan and I have been following her Wayward Children series from the beginning. But Across the Green Grass Fields bored me to tears. Nothing really happens, the stakes are too low to become invested in the characters’ fates.

I previously disliked a book by this author, but I loved this book:

I might have this category backwards, but what the heck. I adored Christina Henry’s Lost Boy, and later I read and wasn’t as thrilled with The Ghost Tree. Hey, you can’t win ’em all!

I love this cover, but I didn’t like this book:

I love everything about the cover of Docile by K.M. Szpara, but the story left me a bit on the cold side. I loved that Szpara took on some weighty themes, but the worldbuilding was on the sparse side and I couldn’t understand the characters’ motivations.

I didn’t like this cover, but I loved this book:

Our Crooked Hearts by Melissa Albert is one of my favorite books of the year so far, but the cover doesn’t do it justice at all. I mean yes, there is a rabbit theme going on in the story, but the title and author font makes no sense at all to me, and overall the cover is just BLAH.

Do you want to join in? Let me know if you do this tag too:-D

  1. What a fun tag! I’m totally going to do this (er, NOT in September because I’m already overposting this month, with the Pirateathon). When we get to thinking we’re bound by specific genres, authors, or tropes, this is the tag to remind us that we’re full-spectrum readers. Thanks for posting this! 😀

  2. This is a fun tag! Its funny because the cover you love I don’t like and the cover you didn’t like I like…lol. Not read either of those books though. 🙂

  3. I’ve yet to read any of these, but The Book Eaters and the Wayward Children series are on my list. I like how the tag goes back and forth, didn’t like this one, liked that one, etc.
