What’s On My Plate – August 2022

Happy August everyone! It’s weird typing “August” when I feel like I’m still somewhere in March, lol. But time ticks on and here we are. This month I seem to have a more manageable amount of review books to read, but I also have some July leftovers that I’m hoping to get to as well, so we’ll see how it goes. I like that my pile this month is a nice mix of genres!

Here are the books I hope to read in August:

The Mother’s Wheel by Robin Kirk comes out in September, but I’m going to be on the blog tour at the end of the month so I’ll be reading it early. I’m very excited to start!

I’ve already read Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney and wow, I cannot wait to start reading Feeney’s backlist. I absolutely loved it, and my review will be up soon.

Eversion by Alastair Reynolds is another book I’ve heard very positive things about, so I’ve requested a review copy and I can’t wait to see what all the fuss is about!

I’ve been hearing glowing things about The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean, so it’s high at the top of the month’s most anticipated books. It’s also surprisingly short, so I hope to get to it soon.

For a change of pace, how about a gritty horror/thriller with supernatural elements? I’ve been wanting to check out Gabino Iglesias and so I’m thrilled to have a copy of The Devil Takes You Home.

And now for something completely different, A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland, a queer fantasy romance that readers are gushing over!

And if you like your fantasy romance with humor mixed it, I think The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen will be just the thing. This sounds like it might fall under the “cozy” genre as well.

Shutter by Ramona Emerson is being described as a paranormal mystery, and I’m here for it!

Finally, Face by Joma West is a short Tordotcom novel, and unfortunately the low ratings on Goodreads so far aren’t that assuring. But I’m curious, so I’ll let you know what I think!

Top five most viewed reviews in July (based on page views):

I really enjoy analyzing the reviews on my site that seem to be the most popular, and I’m always surprised at those reviews that keep getting hits month after month or even year after year. So I’ve started listing the top five reviews for the previous month. Maybe I’m the only one who finds this interesting, lol, but oh well. I’m adding the year the review was posted as well, so you can see that book reviews do indeed have “legs.”

  1. A Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos (2018)

  2. Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak (2022)

  3. Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel (2022)

  4. What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher (2022)

  5. Ordinary Monsters by J.M. Miro (2022)

Ugh, A Winter’s Promise is back in the number one spot! Much to my chagrin, this is the most read review on my site, with over 7,600 hits to date. Come on people, there are way better books to read about! What Moves the Dead is the only review from July on this list, but I’m happy to see Hidden Pictures, Sea of Tranquility and Ordinary Monsters from previous months all hanging tough:-D

Do we have any books in common this month? What is your most anticipated book of August?

Yes totally amen 100% March! How, just how, can it be August? !

I know! It doesn’t seem possible (although the weather is telling me it’s definitely August;-))

  2. Hart & Mercy is our only book in common for August — looks like it should be fun! August is my last month overloaded with review books, but if I can get through most, I should be able to read much more freely for the rest of the year, which will be a huge relief. Happy August!

  3. Whoo, Eversion is very very tempting! Can’t wait to see what you think of it. I’m shocked I had never heard of this author, but feel better to see you haven’t reviewed anything by him yet either!
Every week I check and post (on my homepage) the books most seen during the week, the month, and the quarter. Often surprising. Usually at the beginning of the school year, the most seen is often a classic, like Of Mice and Men!

I’m shocked I have never read Alistair Reynolds, he’s been writing science fiction for a long time. And yes, I find it so interesting to see what reviews people are Googling and reading:-)

  4. I have Daisy Darker to read (listen). But August has the most anticipated books of the year for me, many on August 23rd. I expect some of these to be favorites of 2022. Soul Taken by Patricia Briggs, Ruby Fever by Ilona Andrews, Storm Echo by Nalini Singh, What She Found by Robert Dugoni, Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood, Fox Creek by William Kent Krueger, and shortly following Final Heir by Faith Hunter in early September. So many great reads ahead!

You do have a lot of good sounding books this month. I feel like August and the next couple of months after are going to be epic, release wise!

  5. I can’t believe it’s August already. Flipping heck we’ll be talking about Christmas at this rate.
Can’t wait to read your thoughts for Daisy Darker which I’ll be starting soon.

Ha ha I know! Christmas is just around the corner, lol. I can’t wait for you to read Daisy Darker!

  6. Eversion and Daisy Darker are the two here I’m most looking forward to hearing about and reading. And that cover for The Book Eaters also has me very curious.

  7. I’m so excited to read Daisy Darker so I’m glad to hear you loved it. I started trying to read The Book Eaters this morning but was struggling a bit so I set it aside. Hoping to try again this weekend when I have more time to focus on it.

Book Eaters is just such a weird premise that it caught me off guard in the beginning. But it turns into a story about motherhood and protecting your children and a woman’s loss of rights, so it’s very powerful. Also super exciting!

Book Eaters is super weird in the beginning but the story really takes off and now I’m hooked:-)

  8. I’m so behind on commenting since school for me started up at the end of July. Sorry I’m just now getting here to comment! Of course I know you’ve reviewed several of the books here and I have to get around to reading those reviews too! Hope August is going well though!
