Future Fiction #182 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

How about a mix of YA horror, science fiction mystery and literary fantasy?

Miguela Angeles is tired. Tired of her abuela keeping secrets, especially about her heritage. Tired of her small Vermont town and hanging out at the same places with the same friends she’s known forever. So when another boring Sunday trip to church turns into a run-in with Sam, a mysterious hottie in town on vacation, Mica seizes the opportunity to get closer to him.

It’s not long before she is under Sam’s spell and doing things she’s never done before, like winning all her martial arts sparring matches—and lying to her favorite people. The more time Mica spends with Sam, the more weird things start to happen, too. Like terrifying-visions-of-the-world-ending weird.

Mica’s gut instincts keep telling her something is off, yet Sam is the most exciting guy she’s ever met. But when Mica discovers his family’s roots, she realizes that instead of being in the typical high school relationship, she’s living in a horror novel.

She has to leave Sam, but will ending their relationship also bring an end to everything she knows and everyone she loves?

Clever, hilarious, and steeped in supernatural suspense, Breakup From Hell will keep you hooked until the last page.

Breakup From Hell by Ann Dávila Cardinal. Releases in January 2023 from HarperTeen. I love this cover! And I think it sounds like a bunch of fun. I just don’t read enough YA horror, so I’m definitely keeping this on my radar.

The Mimicking of Known Successes presents a cozy Holmesian murder mystery and sapphic romance, set on Jupiter, by Malka Older, author of the critically-acclaimed Centenal Cycle.

On a remote, gas-wreathed outpost of a human colony on Jupiter, a man goes missing. The enigmatic Investigator Mossa follows his trail to Valdegeld, home to the colony’s erudite university—and Mossa’s former girlfriend, a scholar of Earth’s pre-collapse ecosystems.

Pleiti has dedicated her research and her career to aiding the larger effort towards a possible return to Earth. When Mossa unexpectedly arrives and requests Pleiti’s assistance in her latest investigation, the two of them embark on a twisting path in which the future of life on Earth is at stake—and, perhaps, their futures, together.

The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Older. Releases in March 2023 from Tordotcom. I’ve read a few things by Older and I really enjoy her work. I’m always up for a mystery set in space, and this sounds awesome!

Ohioana Book Award finalist Ruth Emmie Lang returns with a new cast of ordinary characters with extraordinary abilities.

Five years ago, Nora Wilder disappeared. The older of her two daughters, Zadie, should have seen it coming, because she can literally see things coming. But not even her psychic abilities were able to prevent their mother from vanishing one morning.

Zadie’s estranged younger sister, Finn, can’t see into the future, but she has an uncannily good memory, so good that she remembers not only her own memories, but the echoes of memories other people have left behind. On the afternoon of her graduation party, Finn is seized by an “echo” more powerful than anything she’s experienced before: a woman singing a song she recognizes, a song about a bird…

When Finn wakes up alone in an aviary with no idea of how she got there, she realizes who the memory belongs to: Nora.

Now, it’s up to Finn to convince her sister that not only is their mom still out there, but that she wants to be found. Against Zadie’s better judgement, she and Finn hit the highway, using Finn’s echoes to retrace Nora’s footsteps and uncover the answer to the question that has been haunting them for years: Why did she leave? But the more time Finn spends in their mother’s past, the harder it is for her to return to the present, to return to herself. As Zadie feels her sister start to slip away, she will have to decide what lengths she is willing to go to to find their mother, knowing that if she chooses wrong, she could lose them both for good.

The Wilderwomen by Ruth Emmie Lang. Releases in November 2022 from St. Martin’s Press. Lang wrote a book called Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance a few years ago, which I haven’t read but I’ve heard great things about. I can’t wait to read this!

  1. Nice mix here. Of the three I think I’m most curious about The Wilderwomen. Sounds like an interesting story, two sisters with special powers setting off to find their mother, and it has an interesting cover.

  2. As ever, your reputation as the go-to for the coolest reads continues… They are sound really interesting, but the one that has me drooling unbecomingly is The Mimicking of Known Successes – apart from anything else, what a great title. Thank you for sharing, Tammy:)).

It does! I love that it seems to have a literary fiction vibe to it. I love the combo of literary and magic realism.

I’m also loving the sound of The Mimicking of Known Successes. “a cozy Holmesian murder mystery and sapphic romance” I’m so in!

Reading The Wilderwomen synopsis making me go whoa at she remembers not only her own memories, but the echoes of memories other people have left behind. That sounds so unique. I wanna know more!
