Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
Two new Fall SF books and one fantasy for Wyrd & Wonder:-D
Ocean’s Echo is a stand-alone space adventure about a bond that will change the fate of worlds, set in the same universe as Everina Maxwell’s hit debut, Winter’s Orbit.
Rich socialite, inveterate flirt, and walking disaster Tennalhin Halkana can read minds. Tennal, like all neuromodified “readers,” is a security threat on his own. But when controlled, readers are a rare asset. Not only can they read minds, but they can navigate chaotic space, the maelstroms surrounding the gateway to the wider universe.
Conscripted into the military under dubious circumstances, Tennal is placed into the care of Lieutenant Surit Yeni, a duty-bound soldier, principled leader, and the son of a notorious traitor general. Whereas Tennal can read minds, Surit can influence them. Like all other neuromodified “architects,” he can impose his will onto others, and he’s under orders to control Tennal by merging their minds.
Surit accepted a suspicious promotion-track request out of desperation, but he refuses to go through with his illegal orders to sync and control an unconsenting Tennal. So they lie: They fake a sync bond and plan Tennal’s escape.
Their best chance arrives with a salvage-retrieval mission into chaotic space—to the very neuromodifcation lab that Surit’s traitor mother destroyed twenty years ago. And among the rubble is a treasure both terrible and unimaginably powerful, one that upends a decades-old power struggle, and begins a war.
Tennal and Surit can no longer abandon their unit or their world. The only way to avoid life under full military control is to complete the very sync they’ve been faking.
Can two unwilling weapons of war bring about peace?
Ocean’s Echo by Everina Maxwell. Releases in November 2022 from Tor Books. I really enjoyed Winter’s Orbit, and I like that this is a standalone story. Plus this cover is so beautiful, I just want to stare at it!
A madcap adventure brimming with the ethical quandaries and sardonic wit of The Good Place by World Fantasy Award-winning author K. J. Parker
Long ago, a wealthy man stole an angel and hid her in a chapel, where she remains imprisoned to this day.
That’s the legend, anyway.
A clerical student who’s racked up gambling debts to a local gangster is given an ultimatum—deliver the angel his grandfather kidnapped, or forfeit various body parts in payment.
And so begins a whirlwind theological paradox—with the student at its center—in which the stakes are the necessity of God, the existence of destiny—and the nature of angels.
Pulling the Wings Off Angels by K.J. Parker. Releases in November 2022 from Tordotcom. This cover was revealed a couple of weeks ago, and I wanted to share it during May for Wyrd and Wonder. I’ve enjoyed Parker’s books in the past and this sounds really good!
The Stars Undying by Emery Robin. Releases in November 2022 from Orbit Books. Good thing November is Sci Fi Month, because I’ll have plenty of new reads to choose from:-) I love that this story is inspired by Cleopatra and Julius Caesar, how cool is that?
I definitely need to try that new KJ Parker. Thanks for introducing me, Tammy!
Any time! I agree, it sounds so good.
As happens far too often with me, I’ve been collecting books by KJ Parker but have yet to try any of them. 🙂
Yes me too, I need to read his new one for sure:-)
Ocean’s Echo sounds especially fun, but all three look enticing.

There are just too many enticing books:-)
A space opera inspired by Julius Caesar and Cleopatra? Wow, that sounds pretty intriguing!
I know, right?
The Stars Undying sounds extremely original. I never did read Winter’s Orbit but it feels like it’s been too long since I’ve read some good sci-fi.
I agree, I love the sounds of The Stars Undying:-)
I thoroughly enjoyed Winter’s Orbit, so I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on this standalone story set in the same world:)). And a space opera story based on Anthony and Cleopatra?? I’m trying not to drool unbecomingly at the very thought!
Thank you for sharing these tasty treats, Tammy.
Winter’s Orbit is definitely high on my list:-)
They all sound good, but Ocean’s Echo is going to be a must for me! it’s so exciting to see this, and wow, what a cover!!
I’m excited too, and the cover is amazing!
The Stars Undying cover makes me this its world is going to be this like mix of futuristic tech city with ancient-Egyptian. Super cool!

I think it has potential:-)
These three sound amazing. All three of them!! I think I am the most curious about Maxwell’s book, but only because I have read Winter’s Orbit and really enjoyed that one!
Me too, I’m curious to see if it relates to Winter’s Orbit at all.
I fancy the new Parker book.

It was really good! This new one is a standalone so you could just jump into it.
I agree, the cover for Ocean’s Echo is GORGEOUS! I have been curious about the other book in the series, so I will have to read at least one or the other! The other two sound great too, and you simply have to be stopped for the sake of my TBR (I am obviously kidding, never ever stop please and thank you)
