The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: Unknown magical ability.
This was a tough theme for me. I know fantasy is full of this trope, but for the life of me I couldn’t think of anything. I finally decided to use The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson, which sort of fits: “A young woman living in a rigid, puritanical society discovers dark powers within herself in this stunning, feminist fantasy debut.” In any case, there are some nice covers to showcase, so let’s do this!
2020 Ace edition | 2021 Corgi edition
2020 Bantam Press edition | 2022 Polish edition
2021 Russian edition | 2021 Hungarian edition
I think all of these are really good covers, but I do have a couple of favorites. I love the Ace cover, which is moody and dark, just like the story. I also love the Polish cover, which is my favorite, simply because of the colors and design.
The Polish cover is my favorite too!
I like the Ace cover the best. Like you said, it’s moody, and I’m already wondering about the woman on the cover. Is she a victim or a perpetrator?

All of them are good. I like the Ace cover the best. So much atmosphere.

Oh my god, that Polish edition is beautiful! Definitely my favorite. I like the simplicity of the Bantam edition as well.
I think that all of these editions are really great but my favorite has got to be the Polish edition. It’s gorgeous!!

Love that one! I don’t think it was out yet when I featured this book for a past FF, but if it had been, I would have chosen it too.
I’ve always loved the 2020 Ace cover. I think it’s an absolutely beautiful atmospheric portrait full of all kinds of story and I like how they then blend the trees into the design.
I like the Ace one best!
I love your choice – it’s the one I would be immediately drawn to.
