Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
Three new cover reveals from Tor Nightfire, MCD and Angry Robot, take a look:
Wicker Man meets Final Destination in Jennifer Thorne’s atmospheric, unsettling folk horror novel about love, duty, and community.
On the idyllic island of Lute, every seventh summer, seven people die. No more, no less.
Lute and its inhabitants are blessed, year after year, with good weather, good health, and good fortune. They live a happy, superior life, untouched by the war that rages all around them. So it’s only fair that every seven years, on the day of the tithe, the island’s gift is honored.
Nina Treadway is new to The Day. A Florida girl by birth, she became a Lady through her marriage to Lord Treadway, whose family has long protected the island. Nina’s heard about The Day, of course. Heard about the horrific tragedies, the lives lost, but she doesn’t believe in it. It’s all superstitious nonsense. Stories told to keep newcomers at bay and youngsters in line.
Then The Day begins. And it’s a day of nightmares, of grief, of reckoning. But it is also a day of community. Of survival and strength. Of love, at its most pure and untamed. When The Day ends, Nina―and Lute―will never be the same.
Lute by Jennifer Thorne. Releases in October 2022 from Tor Nightfire. This cover was just revealed last week, and I love it! This sounds like a mix of fantasy and horror, and while the blurb doesn’t sound too horrific, the publisher’s comparisons make me wonder… I can’t wait to read this!
Humankind discovers intelligent life in an octopus species with its own language and culture, and sets off a high-stakes global competition to dominate the future.
Rumors begin to spread of a species of hyperintelligent, dangerous octopus that may have developed its own language and culture. Marine biologist Dr. Ha Nguyen, who has spent her life researching cephalopod intelligence, will do anything for the chance to study them.
The transnational tech corporation DIANIMA has sealed the remote Con Dao Archipelago, where the octopuses were discovered, off from the world. Dr. Nguyen joins DIANIMA’s team on the islands: a battle-scarred security agent and the world’s first android.
The octopuses hold the key to unprecedented breakthroughs in extrahuman intelligence. The stakes are high: there are vast fortunes to be made by whoever can take advantage of the octopuses’ advancements, and as Dr. Nguyen struggles to communicate with the newly discovered species, forces larger than DIANIMA close in to seize the octopuses for themselves.
But no one has yet asked the octopuses what they think. And what they might do about it.
A near-future thriller about the nature of consciousness, Ray Nayler’s The Mountain in the Sea is a dazzling literary debut and a mind-blowing dive into the treasure and wreckage of humankind’s legacy.
The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Naylor. Releases in October 2022 from MCD. Not my usual publisher, but wow this sounds amazing! I love that this is about a super intelligent octopus species, but it’s also a thriller. I’m definitely keeping my eye on this one:-D
A traumatised woman with amnesia finds her own dead body and sets out to uncover the truth of her demise in a race against time, sanity, crumbling realities and the ever-present threat of the Silhouette.
When Magpie discovers her own dead body one misty morning in Bristol, it prompts her to uncover the truth of her untimely demise. Her investigations take her on a terrifying journey through multiple realities, experimental treatments, technological innovations and half-memories in a race against time and sanity. Accompanied by a new friend who is both familiar and strange, and constantly on the run from the terrifying, relentless presence of the mysterious predator known only as Silhouette, Magpie must piece together the parts of her life previously hidden. In doing so, she will discover the truth about her past, her potential, and her future.
Full Immersion by Gemma Amor. Releases in September 2022 from Angry Robot. Oh wow, doesn’t this sound amazing?? How do you find your own dead body?? I want to know, so of course I’m going to read this.
Amazing finds, indeed: all three books – as different as they are from each other – sound equally promising, particularly Lute…
Thanks for sharing! 🙂

They are quite different! I love finding books I wouldn’t normally add to my list, sometimes they can be the best ones:-)
OMGosh, all three of these sound awesome! Folk horror and octopus science-horror and Gemma Amor’s prose! Happy reading!

I made this post just for you, Priscilla;-)
That one line premise of Full Immersion is enough to get my attention. 🙂
I know, right? It’s one I’m so curious about.
I added Full Immersion on GR back when the blurb was less detailed…now I want to read it even more! And The Mountain in the Sea makes me think of Seanan McGuire, which is always a good sign .

Somehow I missed Full Immersion until the cover was revealed. Ugh I’m a slacker! lol
You had me at “folk horror” — Lute sounds amazing! And the octopus book sounds pretty bonkers. Will definitely want to hear about it once you read it!
I’m always in for folk horror too:-)
I really love the sound of Lute. I wanna find out what exactly happens on The Day. The cover is really beautiful too!
The Mountain in the Sea looks like a good one too. “Humankind discovers intelligent life in an octopus species with its own language and culture…” I mean what can go wrong, right? lol
Full Immersion making me go what? she finds her own body? how? Definitely sounds intriguing!

Full Immersion sounds really intriguing because yeah, how do you find your own dead body? Great picks this week!
Thanks, these all sound good to me, but yep, Full Immersion is at the top of the list:-)

I think I saw Lute on NG but was trying to behave because obviously I’ve slipped behind recently.
