Future Fiction #167 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Three exciting new SFF covers to reveal, take a look:

From idyllic small towns to claustrophobic urban landscapes, Mallory Viridian is constantly embroiled in murder cases that only she has the insight to solve. But outside of a classic mystery novel, being surrounded by death doesn’t make you a charming amateur detective, it makes you a suspect and a social pariah. So when Mallory gets the opportunity to take refuge on a sentient space station, she thinks she has the solution. Surely the murders will stop if her only company is alien beings. At first her new existence is peacefully quiet…and markedly devoid of homicide.

But when the station agrees to allow additional human guests, Mallory knows the break from her peculiar reality is over. After the first Earth shuttle arrives, and aliens and humans alike begin to die, the station is thrown into peril. Stuck smack-dab in the middle of an extraterrestrial whodunit, and wondering how in the world this keeps happening to her anyway, Mallory has to solve the crime—and fast—or the list of victims could grow to include everyone on board….

Station Eternity by Mur Lafferty. Releases in October 2022 from Ace. I’ve been wondering when Lafferty was going to publish a new novel, I mean her last book Six Wakes came out five years ago! I never miss an opportunity to gush over Six Wakes, which is still a favorite of mine, and although this sounds very different in tone, I can hardly wait:-)

Kellen and Nettle live in a world where anyone can create a life-destroying curse, but only one person has the power to unravel them. But not everyone is happy he can do so and, suddenly, he’s in a race to save both himself and all those who have been touched by magic…

A spell-binding new tale from the master of speculative fiction.

Unraveller by Frances Hardinge. Releases in September 2022 from Macmillan Children’s Books. The blurb is barely a blurb, but just look at that cover! It’s so beautiful (and it reminds me of my husband’s bird photos!) I’m intriuged!

A magical detective dives into the affairs of Chicago’s divine monsters to secure a future with the love of her life. This sapphic period piece will dazzle anyone looking for mystery, intrigue, romance, magic, or all of the above.

An exiled augur who sold her soul to save her brother’s life is offered one last job before serving an eternity in hell. When she turns it down, her client sweetens the pot by offering up the one payment she can’t resist―the chance to have a future where she grows old with the woman she loves.

To succeed, she is given three days to track down the White City Vampire, Chicago’s most notorious serial killer. If she fails, only hell and heartbreak await.

Even Though I Knew the End by C.L. Polk. Releases in November 2022 from Tordotcom. This cover was just revealed yesterday, and I absolutely love it! I have yet to read Polk, which makes me sad, so I hope this will be my first book by this award winning author.

What fantastic covers these are! I will say the cover for Polk’s release sticks with me the most — and that premise is just

  2. “Extraterrestrial whodunit” sounds very promising – and in the meantime I might *finally* read Six Wakes which has been languishing on my TBR for far too long, despite the enthusiastic reviews I’ve read so far… 🙂

  3. You just made my day — I’ve been waiting for Mur Lafferty since Six Wakes too! This one is going to be a must for me. The C. L. Polk book sounds good, but having had a not-great experience with the Witchmark books, I’m on the fence about reading more by this author. Great selections!

Yay another Mur Lafferty fan! This new one sounds completely different from Six Wakes but still sounds so good:-)

  4. I’ve not read anything by Mur Lafferty but Station Eternity sounds absolutely fascinating. I’m very curious about that one.

  5. Oh I’m so happy to see a new Mur Lafferty. Loved Six Wakes. and a sentient space station? I love space stations and feel like we don’t get enough of them. Yes please. 🙂

  6. I love the synopsis of Station Eternity using “extraterrestrial whodunit” because that just needs to be a genre of its own.

I love the cover of Unraveller! In fact, I was also thinking about your husband’s bird photos. Only they aren’t as creepy as the cover (luckily!)

And ooooh Even Though I Knew the End sounds amazing! I saw “sapphic period piece” and I was like yup have to read that!
