Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
An adult fantasy sequel, a thriller, and a YA fantasy debut, take a look:
The Cage of Dark Hours is the second novel in a new trilogy from acclaimed author Marina Lostetter, where the defeat of a serial killer back from the dead has pulled the mask off the myths and magics of a fantastical city.
Krona and her Regulators survived their encounter with Charbon, the long-dead serial killer who returned to their city, but the illusions of their world were shattered forever.
Allied with the healer Melanie they will battle the elite who have ruled their world with deception, cold steel, and tight control of the magic that could threaten their power, while also confronting beasts from beyond the foggy barrier that binds their world.
Now they must follow every thread to uncover the truth behind the Thalo, once thought of as only a children’s tale, who are the quiet, creeping puppet masters of their world.
The Cage of Dark Hours (The Five Penalties #2) by Marina Lostetter. Releases in August 2022 from Tor Books. OK I totally suck because I still haven’t read The Helm of Midnight, the first book in the series. But I figure I have until next August to catch up, so that’s doable, right? I’ve heard a lot of good things about Lostetter’s series, and don’t you love this cover?
In this twisty, mind-bending thriller from the bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes, Emma Averell worries that her crippling insomnia is a sign that she’s slowly going insane—like the mother she’s worked so hard to leave in her past.
Emma Averell loves her life—her high-powered legal career, her two beautiful children, and her wonderful stay-at-home husband—but it wasn’t always so perfect. When she was just five years old, Emma and her older sister went into foster care because of a horrific incident with their mother. Her sister can remember a time when their mother was loving and “normal,” but Emma can only remember her as one thing—a monster. And that monster emerged right around their mother’s fortieth birthday, the same age Emma is approaching now.
Emma desperately wants to keep her successful life separate from her past, so she has always hidden her childhood trauma. But then she’s unable to sleep, and now losing time during the day, also one of the first symptoms her mother showed. Is the madness in her blood, just as her mother predicted? Could she end up hurting her family in her foggy, frenetic state? Or is she truly beginning to lose her mind?
Insomnia by Sarah Pinborough. Releases in April 2022 from William Morrow. It’s been far too long since I’ve read a Sarah Pinborough novel, and I can hardly wait for this one!
For fans of Caraval and The Night Circus, this decadent and darkly enchanting YA fantasy, set against the backdrop of a Belle Époque-inspired hotel, follows seventeen-year-old Jani as she uncovers the deeply disturbing secrets of the legendary Hotel Magnifique.
All her life, Jani has dreamed of Elsewhere. Just barely scraping by with her job at a tannery, she’s resigned to a dreary life in the port town of Durc, caring for her younger sister Zosa. That is, until the Hotel Magnifique comes to town.
The hotel is legendary not only for its whimsical enchantments, but also for its ability to travel—appearing in a different destination every morning. While Jani and Zosa can’t afford the exorbitant costs of a guest’s stay, they can interview to join the staff, and are soon whisked away on the greatest adventure of their lives. But once inside, Jani quickly discovers their contracts are unbreakable and that beneath the marvelous glamour, the hotel is hiding dangerous secrets.
With the vexingly handsome doorman Bel as her only ally, Jani embarks on a mission to unravel the mystery of the magic at the heart of the hotel and free Zosa—and the other staff—from the cruelty of the ruthless maître d’hôtel. To succeed, she’ll have to risk everything she loves, but failure would mean a fate far worse than never returning home.
Hotel Magnifique by Emily J. Taylor. Releases in April 2022 from Razorbill. I love the idea of a traveling hotel, how cool is that? The cover is so pretty, and I think this has a lot of promise!
Ohhh, the new Pinborough sounds delightfully creepy! Which is one of my favorite reading flavors… 😉

That is an interesting cover for The Cage of Dark Hours, and an interesting title, too.
That title definitely makes me curious about the story:-)
I’m all about that new Pinborough!!

All the covers of these books are very eye-catching. And I especially like the idea of a traveling hotel!

Thanks Cindy:-)
You have a lot of time to catch up with the first book before The Cage of Dark Hours but time can go fast! Thrillers where a character has insomnia can be SO creepy. But it sounds like a good kinda creepy, if that makes sense. First of all, the cover of Hotel Magnifique is AMAZING! And beyond that it also sounds like a fantastic read. I loved both Caraval and The Night Circus so I am definitely intrigued!

Thanks Lisa:-)
I’m on the fence about continuing The Helm of Midnight series, the first book was long and felt very dense but I’m willing to give it another go because the world building was so fantastic!
I’m definitely still interested, I just need more free time:-)
I’m so intrigued by the premise of the traveling hotel in your last pick. As a fan of both Caraval and The Night Circus, that one sounds like a must-read for me. 🙂
I agree, that traveling hotel idea sounds cool:-)
As usual, you’ve picked quite a different selection of books — but Insomnia sounds incredible — and Sarah Pinborough! I didn’t know she had a new one out!
I didn’t either! I saw it on another blog and had to feature it:-)
The Cage of Dark Hours has both an awesome title and cover. Very excited for that one I might have to check out Hotel Magnifique too!
