Over-Booked [145] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

Lots of exciting Fall books came in the mail recently, take a look:

Physical books for review:

One of my favorite fantasy series is coming to an end (weep) with The Bone Ship’s Wake by R.J. Barker. I’ll be starting this soon, maybe next week. I’m afraid the word “wake” is going to have several meanings in this story and to be honest I’m terrified of what might happen to my beloved characters! Big thanks to Orbit for the review copy:-D

Also from the wonderful Orbit/Redhook team is Sistersong by Lucy Holland, an October release that looks and sounds very good. This is a historical fantasy set in the Dark Ages, and I’m looking forward to starting it.

I’m a big fan of Aliya Whiteley and her strange imagination, so it was a given that I would read her latest From the Neck Up, a collection of short stories. With huge thanks to Titan Books for this beautiful finished copy, the release date for this book is next week, and I’ll be diving into it soon.

Mordew by Alex Pheby wasn’t really on my radar, and to be honest I declined a copy of this book when I was sent a pitch email—not because I don’t want to read it, but because I just can’t fit it in. But it showed up anyway! Now I’ll take a closer look and see if I can squeeze it in at some point. Thank you to Tor Books!

I was surprised to receive this lovely finished hardcover of Beasts and Beauty by Soman Chainani from Harper Collins. I’ll be reading it in the next couple of weeks, and I plan on showing off some of the illustrations in my review, it really is lovely!

And with thanks to Tor.com, this lovely finished copy of In the Watchful City by S. Qiouyi Lu arrived. I hope to squeeze this in this month as well, since it’s so short. Isn’t the cover beautiful?

Digital books for review:

I’m really excited about all four of these! First, I immediately grabbed Sisters of the Forsaken Stars by Lina Rather as soon as I saw it on NetGalley. I loved the first book in the series:-D

I’m always up for a new Nnedi Okorafor book and her next one, Noor, sounds really good.

Big thanks to Stephanie Burgis for sending a copy of Scales and Sensibility to me, a fantasy retelling of Jane Austen! This is another one I hope to read very soon.

Finally, I was granted a “wish” on NetGalley and got myself a copy of The Violence by Delilah S. Dawson. This sounds like a fun horror/thriller.

Big thanks to Tor.com, DAW Books, Stephanie Burgis and Del Rey:-D

Are you planning to read any of these books?

  2. Caroline

I loved Sistersong so much! I didn’t know the ballad it is inspired by so the story was new to me. I wish I could read it for the first time again! I’m waiting for my heart to heal before re-reading. I hope you enjoy!

I love that you’ve read Sistersong, Caroline! I had forgotten it’s already out in the UK. Now I’m REALLY looking forward to it:-)

  3. Will

Busy week this week, eh? Best of luck! I really need to start refusing more books (and requesting less) so I can actually maybe start catching up on the backlog.

I’ve been telling myself for years to quit requesting and saying “yes.” I’ve gotten good about the refusal part lately, but not the whole NetGalley button pushing thing, lol.

  4. So many great books coming out that I want to read, so little time. T_T I can’t wait to read Mordew! It looks like it’s going to be a really good one. I’m on a blog tour for Beasts and Beauty and I’m really excited about that one, too. I love that cover! Hope you end up loving all of these when you read them. 😀
