Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews.
I’m getting my act together and trying to post my book hauls more often! Ha ha. Here are the books I’ve received in the last couple of weeks:
Physical books for review:
I think I must have entered a giveaway for Appleseed by Matt Bell, and even though I don’t remember, ha ha, I’m really excited to have this. It appears to be a very ambitious take on climate change and more of a literary approach rather than a speculative one. I’m definitely going to try to read this. Big thanks to Custom House!
Beasts and Beauty: Dangerous Tales by Soman Chainani isn’t my usual read. This is middle grade and heavily illustrated, but you may recognize Chainani’s name as the author of The School for Good and Evil, which was a very popular series several years ago. This should be a nice change of pace! Big thanks to Megan and HarperCollins for the review copy:-)
I’m very happy to have this beautiful finished copy of The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo, and I may try to squeeze it in at the end of Wyrd and Wonder this month, since it has a June 1st release date. Thank you Tor.com!
And finally, thank you to Rebellion Publishing for sending an ARC of The Liar of Red Valley by Walter Goodwater. This is a September release so I won’t be reading it for a while, but it sounds really good. I believe it’s being marketed as urban fantasy, and if you click on the link you can see what the finished cover looks like.
Digital books for review:
I grabbed Wildwood Whispers by Willa Reece as soon as I saw it on NetGalley. I featured this on a Future Fiction a few months ago and it’s coming out soon!
These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant is another FF pick, and I’m very happy to be approved for this review copy. This is a thriller that is set in the Appalachian mountains and I’m very excited to check it out.
This must be the week for Tammy stepping out of her comfort zone, because here is another book that is a little unusual for this blog. The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton is a historical mystery, but wow it sounds good! I think I also signed up for the blog tour, lol. So I’ll be reading this soon and posting a review as it’s a June release.
Rick Wilber contacted me and asked if I would read his upcoming sci-fi Alien Day, and I just had to say yes! I believe this is connected to or set in the same world as one of his other books, but I’m reading it with the assumption that it will act as a stand alone.
And I’m really looking forward to another horror title from Tor Nightfire, Slewfoot by Brom. The finished book is full of illustrations, and this might be one title I’ll need to buy when it comes out. It sounds like fun.
Huge thanks to Redhook, Minotaur Books, Berkley, Tor Books, and Tor Nightfire:-D
You put The Liar of Red Valley on my radar! I’ve just requested it on NG. Finger crossed they approve me, since I wrote a glowing review for one of their titles – One Day All This Will Be yours by Adrian Tchaikovsky .
I hope you get it!
I did!
Lots of really interesting titles!
Just a FYI, tynga has retired from blogging, and Reading Reality is the sole host now https://www.readingreality.net/2021/05/stacking-the-shelves-meme-official-re-launch/
Thanks for letting me know!
Loving the covers on the ARCs with cover designs. So beautiful and eye catching. They all sound so good, Tammy. I hope you enjoy them!
Thank you Jenn:-)
I LOVE illustrated books, so I have my eye on that Beasts and Beauty: Dangerous Tales one and Slewfoot.
I agree, I don’t read enough of them:-)
Beasts and Beauty: Dangerous Tales caught my eye immediately when I saw it on this post and also The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels because duh historical, definitely up my alley. 😀

I could see you enjoying The Wisteria Society for sure:-)
I’m very much looking forward to reading your thoughts on Beasts and Beauty if you get to it. I’ve been drawn to middle grade lately, perhaps desiring a bit of youthful reminiscence, but I’m never sure what to try. I won a giveaway for These Silent Woods a little over a month ago, so I’m hopeful it might still show up at some point. 🙂 And I think I’ll eventually have to track down a copy of Slewfoot. I enjoyed a previous Brom novel enough I’m willing to try anything he writes or illustrates.
I hope you get your book soon! And I also need to see a copy of Slewfoot, I’m curious about the artwork.
I really enjoyed the last Kimi Cunningham Grant book I read and I am thinking about this one. Just FYI, Stacking the Shelves is all at Reading Reality now. I am working on updating my templates.

Good to know, I hadn’t realized the host had changed. Thanks for the heads up!
Ooh, a Brom book! I love his artwork. Enjoy!
Me too, I’m excited to see the finished book:-)
Yes, there are a couple books here I know I’ll definitely read! These Silent Woods is for sure, and I’m more and more intrigued by Wildwood Whispers!
I usually have good luck with Redhook, so I’m excited about Wildwood Whispers:-)
I look forward to reading your thoughts on the Wisteria Society of `Lady Scoundrels.

I’m looking forward to reading something different:-)
Nice haul this week! I have The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels coming up on my TBR soon as well. It sounds really good so hopefully we’ll both love it. 🙂
The Liar of Red Valley is going on my tbr right now! So many great sounding books!
I have a copy of Slewfoot as well. It will be my first Brom read although I own two others. I want to read Beasts and Beauty but primarily because I’m Beauty and the Beast obsessed.
Oooh, I absolutely LOVE the cover of Beasts and Beauty: Dangerous Tales. That sounds like one I’d enjoy, so I’ll have to look that up! Looks like you got another great haul! Hope you enjoy your new reads. 😀
