Future Fiction #125 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books #wyrdandwonder

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Today we’re looking far ahead to 2022! Here are three fantasy releases coming out next year that I’m super excited for:

With her signature mix of the grim and the delightful, award-winning author T. Kingfisher takes the old bones of fantasy and fairytale and makes them into something entirely new in this enchanting adventure.

After years of seeing her sisters suffer at the hands of an abusive prince, Marra—the shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter—has finally realized that no one is coming to their rescue. No one, except for Marra herself.

Seeking help from a powerful gravewitch, Marra is offered the tools to kill a prince—if she can complete three impossible tasks. But, as is the way in tales of princes, witches, and daughters, the impossible is only the beginning.

On her quest, Marra is joined by the gravewitch, a reluctant fairy godmother, a strapping former knight, and a chicken possessed by a demon. Together, the five of them intend to be the hand that closes around the throat of the prince and frees Marra’s family and their kingdom from its tyrannous ruler at last.

Nettle & Bone is the kind of book that immediately feels like an old friend. Fairytale mythic resonance meets homey pragmatism in this utterly delightful story. It’s creepy, funny, heartfelt, and full of fantastic characters I absolutely loved!” —Melissa Caruso, author of The Tethered Mage

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher. Releases in April 2022 from Tor Books. OK, I know this is pretty far out there, but I couldn’t resist the NEW T. KINGFISHER BOOK!! I’m so excited for this, and check out that lovely cover. This sounds like it’s got Kingfisher’s signature quirkiness and a fairy tale inspired story too:-)

From an award-winning team of authors, editors, and translators comes a groundbreaking short story collection that explores the expanse of Chinese science fiction and fantasy.

In The Way Spring Arrives and Other Stories, you can dine at a restaurant at the end of the universe, cultivate to immortality in the high mountains, watch roses perform Shakespeare, or arrive at the island of the gods on the backs of giant fish to ensure that the world can bloom.

Written, edited, and translated by a female and nonbinary team, these stories have never before been published in English and represent both the richly complicated past and the vivid future of Chinese science fiction and fantasy.

Time travel to a winter’s day on the West Lake, explore the very boundaries of death itself, and meet old gods and new heroes in this stunning new collection.

The Way Spring Arrives and Other Stories edited and collected by Yu Chen & Regina Kanyu Wang. Releases from Tor.com in March 2022. Wow, this whole package sounds amazing. These are all stories by female and non binary Chinese writers and have never been published in English before. Even the editors are female/non binary, and I have to say short story collections that are this specific usually work for me.

When Margaret Welty spots the legendary hala, the last living mythical creature, she knows the Halfmoon Hunt will soon follow. Whoever is able to kill the hala will earn fame and riches, and unlock an ancient magical secret. If Margaret wins the hunt, it may finally bring her mother home. While Margaret is the best sharpshooter in town, only teams of two can register, and she needs an alchemist.

Weston Winters isn’t an alchemist–yet. Fired from every apprenticeship he’s landed, his last chance hinges on Master Welty taking him in. But when Wes arrives at Welty Manor, he finds only Margaret and her bloodhound Trouble. Margaret begrudgingly allows him to stay, but on one condition: he must join the hunt with her.

Although they make an unlikely team, Wes is in awe of the girl who has endured alone on the outskirts of a town that doesn’t want her, in this creaking house of ghosts and sorrow. And even though Wes disrupts every aspect of her life, Margaret is drawn to him. He, too, knows what it’s like to be an outsider. As the hunt looms closer and tensions rise, Margaret and Wes uncover dark magic that could be the key to winning the hunt – if they survive tht long. In A Far Wilder Magic, Allison Saft has written an achingly tender love story set against a deadly hunt in an atmospheric, rich fantasy world that will sweep you away.

A Far Wilder Magic by Allison Saft. Releases in March 2022 from Wednesday Books. OK so I’m not too crazy about the hunting aspect of this story—killing the last living mythical creature sounds like a terrible idea!—but the rest of the story is pulling me in. This is a YA fantasy, and while I’m hesitant these days to pick up YA, I’m definitely keeping this in mind.

  1. I truly like your picks! I admit that I had your same thought on A Far Wilder Magic, but it sounds intriguing and the cover is original, so curiosity wins 😉

  2. Looking ahead to 2022 already? I’ll take it if we stick to only books. LOL The Way Spring Arrives sounds really interesting. Short stories are hit and miss with me, but I am always willing to try then. And Nettle & Bone sounds good too. Love that cover! I hope you enjoy all three of these when you read them, Tammy!

  3. Nettle & Bone sounds amazing! But I kinda just wanna know about the chicken possessed by a demon I love a good short story collection so gonna have to keep my eye out for The Way Spring Arrives and Other Stories. A Far Wilder Magic is also amazing sounding. I just hope the creature doesn’t get killed!

I think Kingfisher is the perfect author to write about a demon possessed chicken;-)

  4. NEW T. KINGFISHER BOOK! *flails* I know I’m late to the Kingfisher bandwagon, but I am absolutely SOLD. Nettle & Bone sounds wonderful and now I’m super excited about it. 2022 is too far away. xD

  5. I love the look of all of these but that Kingfisher book is called to me, *read me, read me*.
    Must have.
    Lynn 😀

  6. It seems like all my comments on your blog today (and I am sorry that they are so many together, I am not turning into a stalker, I am just trying to get back to all that I missed while I was on hiatus!) are quite similar, but I have yet to read Kingfisher too, even if I have some books on my TBR and this new one seems pretty intriguing. And the cover! Wow!
