Future Fiction #124 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Tor.com has been on fire with cover reveals lately, so hey let’s do an “all Tor.com” Future Fiction this week!

Welcome to the Whitethorn Institute. The first step is always admitting you need help, and you’ve already taken that step by requesting a transfer into our company.

There is another school for children who fall through doors and fall back out again. It isn’t as friendly as Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children. And it isn’t as safe.

When Eleanor West decided to open her school, her sanctuary, her Home for Wayward Children, she knew from the beginning that there would be children she couldn’t save; when Cora decides she needs a different direction, a different fate, a different prophecy, Miss West reluctantly agrees to transfer her to the other school, where things are run very differently by Whitethorn, the Headmaster.

She will soon discover that not all doors are welcoming…

Where the Drowned Girls Go (Wayward Children #7) by Seanan McGuire. Releases on January 4th 2022 from Tor.com. A story about Cora!!! OK about three books ago I predicted that the next book would focus more on Cora. I was wrong, but now we’re getting a Cora-centric story! Also, this sounds like a return to the darker side of this series, for which I am very excited. I haven’t enjoyed the lighter, happier installments, so hopefully this one will work for me. Also, we get to see what the Whitethorn Institute is like!

Isobel is the Queen of Sparkle Dungeon, and has been since the game’s first release. She’s retained her title across all three sequels, and the combination of her in-game magical spell utterances and her real-world dance moves have seen off all pretenders to her throne. Of course, playing to her level requires dedication as well as skill. And that sort of time-sink doesn’t help when you really should be out working to pay the rent.

So when the marketing company that promotes Sparkle Dungeon invites her in to play-test Sparkle Dungeon 5 for a fee, it seems like the perfect fit.

But Isobel will soon learn that her in-game spells and her real-world dance moves are part of a bigger picture. A much bigger picture.

Battle of the Linguist Mages by Scotto Moore. Releases in January 2022 from Tor.com. This sounds like all kinds of crazy fun. Video games, spells and what the heck is a Sparkle Dungeon?? I want to find out:-D

Kate Elliott’s Servant Mage is a fun secondary world fantasy from one of the best writers working in the genre.

They choose their laws to secure their power.

Fellion is a Lamplighter, able to provide illumination through magic. A group of rebel Monarchists free her from indentured servitude and take her on a journey to rescue trapped compatriots from an underground complex of mines.

Along the way they get caught up in a conspiracy to kill the latest royal child and wipe out the Monarchist movement for good.

But Fellian has more than just her Lamplighting skills up her sleeve…

Servant Mage by Kate Elliott. Releases in January 2022 from Tor.com. I may have saved the best cover for last. I’m drooling over this one! I love the sound of the story too.

Isn’t that crazy? Even more crazy is the fact that I’m caught up with the series;-)

  1. I’ve yet to try McGuire’s Wayward Children series, though I have them and would really like to. And I love that cover for Servant Mage. I don’t think I’ve tried Kate Elliott, either. I wonder if it really has dragons in it…. 🙂

I haven’t read Kate Elliott either and I feel like a terrible SFF fan for admitting that!

  2. I preordered the Seanan McGuire book practically the second it was announced! I love that series so much. I like the look of the Kate Elliot book, although I had to pause a minute to google “secondary world fantasy”. 🙂

  3. Just mention the book is by Seanan McGuire and I want to read it. Where the Drowned Girls Go sounds really good. I really need to start that series. Scotto Moore’s book really appeals to me too. It sounds like such fun! I hope you enjoy all three of these when you read them, Tammy!

Oh my gosh, I cannot take my eyes off The Battle of the Linguist Mages! That cover is lovely!!

  5. Okay, not gonna lie that I’m a teensy bit disappointed that we’re getting a Cora book before Kade or Christopher. I’m also not a fan of how much this cover reminds me of Come Tumbling Down, for whatever reason. Still, I can’t resist a Wayward Children book and I will obviously have to read it. xD

Also, I’m super excited for Servant Mage and yes, that cover is amazing. Dragons, ftw.
