Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
Three new covers and three more books I want to read, take a look:
Good Omens meets The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet in this defiantly joyful adventure set in California’s San Gabriel Valley, with cursed violins, Faustian bargains, and queer alien courtship over fresh-made donuts.
Shizuka Satomi made a deal with the devil: to escape damnation, she must entice seven other violin prodigies to trade their souls for success. She has already delivered six.
When Katrina Nguyen, a young transgender runaway, catches Shizuka’s ear with her wild talent, Shizuka can almost feel the curse lifting. She’s found her final candidate.
But in a donut shop off a bustling highway in the San Gabriel Valley, Shizuka meets Lan Tran, retired starship captain, interstellar refugee, and mother of four. Shizuka doesn’t have time for crushes or coffee dates, what with her very soul on the line, but Lan’s kind smile and eyes like stars might just redefine a soul’s worth. And maybe something as small as a warm donut is powerful enough to break a curse as vast as the California coastline.
As the lives of these three women become entangled by chance and fate, a story of magic, identity, curses, and hope begins, and a family worth crossing the universe for is found.
Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki. Releases in September 2021 from Tor Books. Isn’t this cover lovely? And what about this story blurb? OMG I need to read this immediately!
Diamond-sharp and savagely wry, The Body Scout is a timely science fiction thriller debut set in an all-too-possible future, perfect for readers of William Gibson.
Kobo has some problems. His cybernetics are a decade out of date, he’s got a pair of twin sister loan sharks knocking on his door, and his work scouting for a baseball league run by pharmaceutical companies is about to go belly-up. Things couldn’t get much worse. Then his childhood best friend-Monsanto Mets slugger J.J. Zunz-is murdered at home plate.
Determined to find the killer, Kobo plunges into the dark corners and glittering cloud condos of a world ravaged by climate change and repeat pandemics, and where genetic editing and advanced drugs mean you can have any body you want–as long as you can afford it. But even among the philosophical Neanderthals, zootech weapons, and genetically modified CEOs, there’s a curveball he never could have called.
The Body Scout by Lincoln Michel. Releases in October 2021 from Orbit Books. I think this sounds like fun. I’m a big fan of sci-fi/mystery/thrillers, and I’ll definitely be making time for this in the Fall.
The Mercenary Librarians and the Silver Devils are back in The Devil You Know, the next installment of USA Today and New York Times bestselling author Kit Rocha’s post-apocalyptic Action/Romance, with hints of Orphan Black and the Avengers
Maya has had a price on her head from the day she escaped the TechCorps. Genetically engineered for genius and trained for revolution, there’s only one thing she can’t do—forget.
Gray has finally broken free of the Protectorate, but he can’t escape the time bomb in his head. His body is rejecting his modifications, and his months are numbered.
When Maya’s team uncovers an operation trading in genetically enhanced children, she’ll do anything to stop them. Even risk falling back into the hands of the TechCorps.
And Gray has found a purpose for his final days: keeping Maya safe.
The Devil You Know (Mercenary Librarians #2) by Kit Rocha. Releases in August 2021 from Tor Books. Tor just revealed this cover a couple of days ago, and I was happy to see it! I had a lot of fun with Deal With the Devil, the first book in the series, and I’m looking forward to this one.
I recall your excellent review of Deal with the Devil and how tempted I was… but still don’t think I can lever in a new series just yet! I am particularly drawn to Light From Uncommon Stars and will keep an eye out for it – thank you for sharing, Tammy:))
Series are definitely a commitment, there are so many I want to start but just can’t…
I agree, I do like that cover for Light From Uncommon Stars.
It’s simple yet powerful.
Well that description has me interested in Light From Uncommon Stars. Onto the list it goes. 🙂
I know, it sounds so good, hopefully not too good to be true, lol.
I’m in love with the synopsis of Light From Uncommon Stars (and the title and the cover!)

Me too, it just sounds amazing:-)
Good Omens meets The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet? I’m intrigued. Faustian bargains and queer aliens? Tell me more. Courtship over fresh-made donuts? Okay, I’m sold! 🙂
I think blurbs are getting better and better:-)
I love all the covers, Tammy! I like science fiction mysteries and Light from Uncommon Stars sounds really good. I didn’t finish Deal With the Devil last year–too much romance mixed in with my fantasy! I’ll have to think about that one. Maybe more fantasy in there after I stopped!
There was quite a lot of romance in Deal with the Devil, totally agree:-)
Oh my, these all sound so good! Light from Uncommon Stars in particular is really calling out to me!
Me too, the story seems so unusual:-)
All of those seem great, and they all have eye-catching covers. I am quite in love with them all!
It’s a good bunch, right? 🙂
Ooh, all sound good, but I especially love the sound of bargaining for violinists’ souls. 🙂
That’s what got me too:-)
Love the covers of the first two. And I like the sound of mercenary librarians for the last one. Great picks! Thanks for visiting my Wednesday post earlier!

Yes, it’s definitely got that cyberpunk feel.
I’m also looking forward to the Devil You Know.

Oh, I love the cover from Light From Uncommon Stars!
Me too, it’s magical!
Nice cover for The Devil You Know! I won’t be continuing the series since I wasn’t a big fan of the first book, but hope you’ll enjoy it!
I liked it, it was fun, so we’ll see if I’m in the mood by the time it comes out:-)
Oh , i TOTALLY agree, I need to read Light behind the Stars NOWWW! That blurb is fantastic — and the cover is lovely too. What a fabulous pick!
Thanks Verushka!
Light From Uncommon Stars sounds incredible! Anything compared to The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet will always pique my interest.
Agreed, I think it will be really good!
I do not normally like fish, but I love the cover of Light From Uncommon Stars. It sounds really good too. Mercenary Librarians . . . Now that’s a series I have to check out! I hope you enjoy all three of these, Tammy.
Mercenary Librarians is fun but very romance heavy:-)
I love the sound of Light From Uncommon Stars and that cover for Body Scout is definitely one that would pull me in.
Lynn 😀
Thank you so much, Tammy!
I hope you enjoy reading Light From Uncommon Stars–I can’t wait until it’s finally off to see the world.

Thanks for visiting, Ryka! I can’t wait to read your book
I’ll be snatching up The Body Scout on release. Sounds very cyberpunk and I’m nothing if not a sucker for cyberpunk Thanks for sharing as always Tammy, Future Fiction is one of my fave ways to expand my TBR.
Oooh, the sequel for Deal With the Devil is coming out already?! I’m so hopelessly behind haha. I love the sound of it, and I can’t wait to start the series! Might just read the books back-to-back. 🙂 Guess there’s sometimes a benefit to being behind on your TBR lol.
