Five Star Predictions for the First Half of 2021

I’ve seen several bloggers recently do “five star prediction” posts, and I thought I’d jump in and do one myself! I’ve chosen ten books that will release January – June, books that have a strong chance of being five star reads for me. It will be fun to check back at the end of June to see if a) I’ve managed to read the book and b) what my rating was. I will note that all of these except two are authors I’ve already read and loved before, hence my confidence in my predictions. So I’m taking a chance on two new authors! These are arranged alphabetically by title. Here we go:

The Album of Dr. Moreau by Daryl Gregory is a no brainer. I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Gregory and I have no doubt I’ll love this too.

The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman. I have only read one book by Buehlman but it’s one of the most memorable horror stories I’ve ever read (The Suicide Motor Club). He’s tackling fantasy this time and I just know he’ll do it well!

Day Zero by C. Robert Cargill. I missed out on Sea of Rust, but lots of bloggers I know loved that book. So I’m betting I’m going to love him too.

The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey. There’s a lot of buzz surrounding Gailey’s latest, and I’m hoping it’s all true:-)

The Fall of Koli (Rampart Trilogy #3) by M.R. Carey. I gave the first two books in the series five stars, so I’m pretty sure this will be another five star read for me.

The Ladies of the Secret Circus by Constance Sayers. This is Sayers’ sophomore novel and I just know it’s going to be just as good as her first book.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I’m hoping this will be another awesome story along the lines of The Marian. In any case, I love Weir’s books and I have high hopes!

Titan Song (The Carter Files #3) by Dan Stout. This is book three in Stout’s super fun, retro urban fantasy, and I’m READY for it!

Whisper Down the Lane by Clay McLeod Chapman. I couldn’t be more excited for this book, and I trust Chapman to deliver the 80s horror goods.

Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell. Maxwell is a debut author so it’s pretty amazing that she’s even on this list! I keep hearing lots of good things about this book, and I will be reading it soon since it comes out in a couple of weeks.

So there you have it! Are you planning on reading any of these books and do you think they might be five star reads for you too?

  1. The Blacktongue Thief is the one I’m most curious about. After that perhaps Day Zero. And I still need to catch up with Koli. Here’s hoping for a series of solid five stars! 🙂

  2. I’ve got Winter’s Orbit and will be reading it shortly. I’ve also requested The Fall of Koli and am keeping toes and fingers crossed that I get an arc – I’ve loved the series to date. I would also love the Cargill under normal circumstances – I loved Sea of Rust – but right now, I can’t face it:(. Titan Shade is a series I would like to read – and of course the Andy Weir. Daryl is also a fine writer – I reckon you’ve a stunning lineup here and I think you’d be entitled to be disappointed if any of these didn’t make your 5 star prediction, Tammy:)

I do have good feelings about all of these. If not 5 stars, then maybe 4.5. It will be fun to find out!

  3. I’d lost touch with so many of these authors! Daryl Gregory (after Afterparty) and Sarah Gailey (after Magic for Liars) and Andy Weir. Thanks for bringing these up! ~ Lex (lexlingua.co)

  4. I hope these books are all as good as you are hoping/expecting them to be!
I actually haven’t heard of a single one on this list which is unusual! I am going to check them all out on Goodreads and no doubt ill end up with a good few added to the TBR!

  5. What a fun idea! I hope all of these will be 5 star reads for you when you get to them! I have high hopes about some of my upcoming reads too. The Ladies of the Secret Circus being among them.

  6. I hope all of these live up to your expectations. I’m really excited for The Echo Wife as it sounds like such an interesting and unique blend of sci fi & thriller.
