Future Fiction #95 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

This week, I’m featuring three new fantasy series starters that come out next Spring, take a look:

A legendary serial killer stalks the streets of a fantastical city in The Helm of Midnight, the stunning first novel in a new trilogy from acclaimed author Marina Lostetter.

In a daring and deadly heist, thieves have made away with an artifact of terrible power–the death mask of Louis Charbon. Made by a master craftsman, it is imbued with the spirit of a monster from history, a serial murderer who terrorized the city with a series of gruesome murders.

Now Charbon is loose once more, killing from beyond the grave. But these murders are different from before, not simply random but the work of a deliberate mind probing for answers to a sinister question.

It is up to Krona Hirvath and her fellow Regulators to enter the mind of madness to stop this insatiable killer while facing the terrible truths left in his wake.

The Helm of Midnight (The Five Penalties #1) by Marina Lostetter. Releases in April 2021 from Tor Books. I’m a little familiar with the author’s science fiction series Noumenon, although I haven’t read it yet. This fantasy sounds fantastic! And I am loving this cover:-D

Sixth Sense meets Stranger Things in T. L. Huchu’s The Library of the Dead, a sharp contemporary fantasy following a precocious and cynical teen as she explores the shadowy magical underside of modern Edinburgh.

When a child goes missing in Edinburgh’s darkest streets, young Ropa investigates. She’ll need to call on Zimbabwean magic as well as her Scottish pragmatism to hunt down clues. But as shadows lengthen, will the hunter become the hunted?

When ghosts talk, she will listen…

Ropa dropped out of school to become a ghostalker. Now she speaks to Edinburgh’s dead, carrying messages to the living. A girl’s gotta earn a living, and it seems harmless enough. Until, that is, the dead whisper that someone’s bewitching children–leaving them husks, empty of joy and life. It’s on Ropa’s patch, so she feels honor-bound to investigate. But what she learns will change her world.

She’ll dice with death (not part of her life plan…), discovering an occult library and a taste for hidden magic. She’ll also experience dark times. For Edinburgh hides a wealth of secrets, and Ropa’s gonna hunt them all down.

The Library of the Dead (Edinbough Nights #1) by T.L. Huchu. Releases in March 2021 from Tor Books. I don’t read a lot of books set in Scotland, so I’m very interested in this series starter. There are so many interesting elements, I’m very curious to read this!

A young scholar’s ambition threatens to reshape an empire determined to retain its might in this epic tale of violent conquest, buried histories, and forbidden magic.

In the thriving city of Bassa, Danso is a clever but disillusioned scholar who longs for a life beyond the rigid family and political obligations expected of the city’s elite. A way out presents itself when Lilong, a skin-changing warrior, shows up wounded in his barn. She comes from the Nameless Islands–which, according to Bassa lore, don’t exist–and neither should the mythical magic of ibor she wields. Now swept into a conspiracy far beyond his understanding, Danso will have to set out on a journey that reveals histories violently suppressed and magic only found in lore.

Son of the Storm (The Nameless Republic #1) by Suyi Davies Okungbowa. Releases in May 2021 from Orbit. I have to admit it was the cover that grabbed my attention in the beginning, but I think this story has potential as well!

  1. Each sounds interesting and something I wouldn’t mind trying. And they’re all new authors to me, which is cool. I do like the idea of the possessed death mask and the mystery around solving the killings. And any book that includes a library perks my interest, and this time it appears to mix Scottish with Zimbabwean, which could be interesting.

  2. Son of the Storm has such a stunning cover and it appears we’re on the same wavelength today with Library of the Dead. I love it when we think alike. Hope you’re having a great week – I need to catch up on visits!

  3. As ever, a stormingly good haul of books – and I’ve just nipped across to NG and requested The Library of the Dead – I just love the premise… I’ve always promised myself that one of these days I’ll visit Edinburgh. So perhaps I now get to do it in a book:)).
