This week’s theme: A cover that is minimalistic.
This week’s choice is a book I haven’t read yet, but I couldn’t resist because it was the first thing I thought of for this theme. And I own a copy so that counts, right? Severance by Ling Ma is a futuristic pandemic story that takes place in New York, so it might be time for me to find my copy and give it a read! Ha ha. Anyway, there are several really good minimalist covers to choose from, take a look:
Farrar, Straus & Giroux edition 2018 | Text Publishing edition 2018
Spanish edition 2020 | Italian edition 2019 | French edition 2020
Since I haven’t read this yet, I can’t tell you which cover best represents the story, but as far as my favorite based simply on the cover design, I think I’m going to choose the Spanish edition. I’m not sure why, but I think it’s really weird and the pink, green and black combo is a little unsettling, which I like.
Sounds like an interesting book, will have to check it out! I love that sunset looking cover myself, it’s lovely!
I’ve heard really good things about it!
I agree, the weird green faces on the Spanish edition make me look twice, that along with the unusual pink background.

Something about those colors, right?
Great choice. I love the Spanish, Italian and French editions to be honest but the Spanish cover is the one that immediately stood out for me.
Lynn 😀
It was tough to pick a favorite, I have to admit.
The Italian edition has a definite The Walking Dead vibe… 🙂

Yes! It does. I like that one too:-)
I like the Text Publishing edition for the colors and simplicity, though it does strange things to the author’s name.
I think it’s a really good cover too. It makes you work a little, lol.
This is a really good book. I think I like your choice the best, too!
I hope I can read it someday:-)
What a great choice of book, Tammy:)). I like your choice – but I prefer the Text Publishing edition… I think the lettering is really cool and clever. Oh dear… I hope the sales of this one haven’t been too hammered by our current problems!
Luckily this is a few years old, so I’m pretty sure the sales are ok:-)
I think I like the Text Publishing edition? Something about the colors appeals to me. 🙂
I agree! And the design is so unusual.
This is on my list to read, it sounds good, the pink and green one is the most eye catching!

For some reason those colors just work together, right?
None of them really leap out at me, but the one you chose definitely makes me do a double take. I was like, why are they faces green? LOL!
I know, now I need to read the book to see if the green faces make sense!
Not a huge fan of any of them, but the Italian edition is the only one I feel looks cool. 🙂
Yeah, I like the Italian one too:-)
I do repfer text Publishing personally! And I do have to get back to this meme!
I love that one too! And yes, totally come back, Sophie:-)
The 2018 Farrar, Straus & Giroux edition is my fav. I was tempted to purchase a copy shortly after it was published because of its simple cover.
That cover really is a stand out, I’m pretty sure I bought my copy because of it:-)
Ooh a pandemic story haha! I like the Italian edition a lot for some reason, maybe it’s the whole highway thing- it just feels kinda postapocalyptic? They’re all good though…

It does, Greg, especially with the cars on the bridge all crooked. Looks like they were just abandoned!
I haven’t read Severance, but it’s interesting how many editions stuck with the minimalist look. It makes me wonder how well that matches the story inside…

That’s a good point. I need to read it now to find out!
Oh wow, that all pink one? talk about minimalist covers. I’m not really a fan of minimalist covers, honestly. I like pretty things that catch my eye, because I’m shallow. xD That’s probably why I like the Italian edition the best, because it’s the least minimalist haha.
I agree, I tend to like a lot going on myself:-)
