The Friday Face-Off: Frame

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: A cover with a frame.

There are several meanings for the word “frame,” but I chose to go with the literal meaning, and I found a book with a frame on the cover that works perfectly. Interview With the Vampire by Anne Rice is a book near and dear to my heart. I read it when I was in high school, I think, and after that I bought every book that Anne Rice wrote as soon as it came out. As you might expect, there are a ton of covers since this book was originally published in 1976, but only a few actually have a picture frame on them. Take a look:

Ballantine Books 1981 | Ballantine Books 2004 | 20th Anniversary edition Ballantine 1997

Ballantine Books 1977 | Warner Books 1994 | Portuguese edition 2009

Romanian edition 2006 | Lithuanian edition 2009 | Hungarian edition 2008

Ballantine Books Mass Market 1977 | Vietnamese edition 2016 | Swedish edition

I realize there are quite a few Ballantine Books editions. And I didn’t even include the original 1976 Ballantine edition because the cover is awful! I just realized that I own the 1981 paperback and all this time I thought it was the original edition. But it’s still my favorite, because it’s the cover that comes to mind when I think about this book, and I love it, even with the bad 1980s title font!

Which cover do you like best?

  1. I like the Swedish edition because the black and the smoke make it mysterious. Now I’m curious about the ’76 edition. I’m going to Google around and see if I can find it!

  2. Quite an interesting range of covers they’ve created over the years. I like the Ballantine 20th Anniversary edition from 1997. I’ve still yet to read this book. I started with The Queen of the Damned and then moved to her Mayfair witches series. Have you kept up with the series lately? Looks like Blood Communion came out in 2018. I’ve completely lost track of these.

  3. The cover you chose feels so classic. I really like the Swedish, 1997 Ballantine, and 20th anniversary edition Ballantine (there really are a lot of Ballantine editions!)

  4. This week’s theme has provided a fascinating range of books, as we have all interpreted it slightly differently, which has been really enjoyable to see – even though I’m a day late:)). My favourite is the Ballatine 1997 Anniversary edition – I like the heightened sense of occasion it provides – and the fact that it is pretty!

  5. Ahh, this book has a special place in my heart as well and yet I never would have imagined it to fit this week’s theme. Brilliant.

  6. I own the Ballantine Books edition of this, so I didn’t even realize there were covers that had frames on them. xD How neat! I actually think my favorite is the 20th Anniversary Ballantine Books edition, though I think the Vietnamese cover looks pretty unique, too!
