Five Star Books in Five Words #wyrdandwonder

One of the fun prompts for Wyrd & Wonder is to list five of your five-star books and describe each of them in five words! I thought it would be fun to give this a shot, so I’ve pulled five of my favorite fantasy books from the archives. And yes, I know in several cases I used more than five words! Here we go:

The Bone Ships by R.J. Barker

dragon | seafaring adventure | intrigue | danger | compassion

Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton

zombies | humor | heartbreak | animals | cheetos

Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames

heart | emotion | humor | bard | adventure

The Queen of Swords by R.S. Belcher

pirates | Africa | female-centric | adventure | magic ships

The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson

Chinese folklore | humor | ghosts | magic | family

This was such an interesting exercise! It shows that certain elements are very important to me and when done right, they often lead to a 5-star rating. In all five books, humor is one of my favorite elements (even in The Bone Ships and The Queen of Swords, even though I didn’t use “humor” as one of my words.) Also “adventure” and “heart” are important as well.

Are you doing this #wyrdandwonder prompt? Have you read any of my five-star books?

You’re right, every reader sees different strengths in books, and it’s fun to see comparisons:-)

  1. Will

A mighty fine list! And you probably could’ve hyphenated “seafaring-adventure” and “magic-ships”. So they’d sorta be one word. Hmmm, but not Chinese folklore. That’s definitely two words lol

  2. I haven’t read any of these yet, but I have 3 of them (The Bone Ships, Bloody Rose, and The Girl with the Ghost Eyes) so I’m pushing those higher on my TBR. And Cheetos? 🙂

Ha ha, the crow in Hollow Kingdom LOVES cheetos and it’s kind of a running joke:-)

Oh zombies and humor go extremely well together, as long as the author is Kira Jane Buxton;-)

  3. It’s such a great prompt! I’m glad Bone Ships made your list, and I’m really curious about The Hollow Kingdom, so thanks for reminding me to read it! 🙂

It’s a little tough! And then after I finished, of course I thought of better words to use:-)

  4. Now that you mention it this is a really good way of narrowing down what really works for you as a reader. I should try it with some more books, maybe on a more regular basis – or add it into my reviews as a quick headline or attention grabber.
    Lynn 😀
