The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “And then there were cats, thought Dog.” – A cover with a dog/canine.
I knew immediately what book I was going to use for this theme: one of my favorites from the past, Watchers by Dean Koontz. If you haven’t read this book and you’re a horror fan, then please do yourself a favor and grab a copy ASAP! Unfortunately, there are a lot of BAD covers for this book, so I picked the least offensive ones to share with you, lol.
Berkley edition 2003 | Berkley Kindle edition 2019 | Berkley edition 1988
Spanish edition 1997 | German edition 1990 | Bulgarian edition 2003
Italian edition 1990 | Portuguese edition 1995 | Spanish edition 1987
I don’t know. I like a lot of these for different reasons. I love the Berkley Kindle edition and the Portuguese edition because the dog is more in line with the dog in the story. The dog in the story is a Golden Retriever so I’m not sure what’s up with that crazy mutt on the German cover, lol! I really like the design of both Spanish editions, although the dogs aren’t the right breed. I guess I’m going with my favorite design for this one:
Great choice this week!
Thanks Kristi!
I like the dichotomy in your choice of cover between the bared fangs and the look in the dog’s eyes, that seems almost pleading. The Portuguese edition is a very good one as well… 🙂

I do love the Portuguese edition:-)
I have read Watchers. It was good! I like the German cover because it’s scary, yikes!

Yeah, that German cover is spooky!
I like many of these but I’m going with the Berkley 2019 cover. I read this some time ago. Thinking I should read it again. I just finished rereading Breathless this week. Love that one!

I don’t think I’ve ever read a bad Dean Koontz:-)
YES! I knew I’d be in for a treat with this week’s topic. I love the Spanish one and the Berkley Kindle Edition as well. I read this so long ago I see a reread in my future. I don’t recall a lot about it but I do recall the dog is NOTHING like that German one. Did you know his newest, Devoted, features dogs again?
I didn’t know Devoted featured dogs! But many of his books have golden retrievers in them, since I believe he’s a big GR fan.
A great choice, this week, Tammy:). My favourite is the Berkley 2019 – what a lovely looking dog – we used to have a golden lab and I don’t think any dog has a more beautiful face…
I have to agree with you, I love labs!
Wow, some of these are disturbing…and kinda tacky! I think your choice is the most understated but most effective, and hence my favorite too!
I love the one you picked, but then the two Berkley ones are also calling to me because the dogs look like my golden retriever Winston, lol.
I love your favourite – and I’ve never read this but with such an enthusiastic suggestion I checked it out on Amazon where it’s currently on offer for 99p! Oh yes, hello, ‘one click’.
Lnn 😀
I was surprised not to see A Boy and His Dog on here. 😉
Aww the puppy looks so mean 🙁 haha I don’t do horror! I like my dogs happy and cuddly 😀 But I agree with your top cover!

Okay, wow, those covers get dark fast, don’t they? xD I had actually never heard of the book before, and the first two covers, I was like, oh, okay, look at the fluffy doggo. Obviously a feel-good read, right? And then we get to the freaking Cujo-looking dog, and then the werewolf-ish thing? I was like … that escalated quickly. Welp. This is why good covers matter LOL.
I kind of like the Italian one, because it reminds me of all those old-school horror movie covers. But I think as far as bookish covers, I agree with your pick.
