Future Fiction #70: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

This week, a debut YA fantasy, a new Tor.com novella, and a new science fiction thriller:

The first book in an epic, heart-pounding fantasy duology about two royal heirs betrothed to be married, but whose loyalties are torn, and a ruthless enemy who threatens their world, perfect for fans of Sabaa Tahir, Hafsah Faizal, and Renée Ahdieh.

Adraa is the royal heir of Belwar, a talented witch on the cusp of taking her royal ceremony test, and a girl who just wants to prove her worth to her people.

Jatin is the royal heir to Naupure, a competitive wizard who’s mastered all nine colors of magic, and a boy anxious to return home for the first time since he was a child.

Together, their arranged marriage will unite two of Wickery’s most powerful kingdoms. But after years of rivalry from afar, Adraa and Jatin only agree on one thing: their reunion will be anything but sweet.

Only, destiny has other plans and with the criminal underbelly of Belwar suddenly making a move for control, their paths cross…and neither realizes who the other is, adopting separate secret identities instead.

Between dodging deathly spells and keeping their true selves hidden, the pair must learn to put their trust in the other if either is to uncover the real threat. Now Wickery’s fate is in the hands of rivals..? Fiancées..? Partners..? Whatever they are, it’s complicated and bound for greatness or destruction.

Cast in Firelight (Wickery #1) by Dana Swift. Releases in November 2020 from Delacorte Press. I think this sounds really good, maybe a bit tropey, but I love stories about secret identities so I think this is going to be fun!

“She’s the adopted daughter of the Angel of Death. Beware of her. Mind her. Death guards her like one of its own.”

The day Fatima forgot her name, Death paid a visit. From hereon in she would be known as Sankofa–a name that meant nothing to anyone but her, the only tie to her family and her past.

Her touch is death, and with a glance a town can fall. And she walks–alone, except for her fox companion–searching for the object that came from the sky and gave itself to her when the meteors fell and when she was yet unchanged; searching for answers.

But is there a greater purpose for Sankofa, now that Death is her constant companion?

Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor. Releases in January 2021 from Tor.com. Yes, we’re looking way into the future with this book! Isn’t this cover gorgeous? The story description is a bit vague, but having read and loved Okorafor in the past, I’m really looking forward to this.

In this claustrophobic science fiction thriller, a woman begins to doubt her own sanity and reality itself when she undergoes a dangerous experiment.

The Ganymede compound is a fresh start. At least that’s what Senna tells herself when she arrives to take part in a cutting-edge scientific treatment, where participants have traumatic memories erased.

And Senna has reasons for wanting to escape her past.

But almost as soon as the treatment begins, Senna finds more than just her traumatic memories disappearing. She hardly recognizes her new life or herself. Even though the symptoms for the process might justify the cure, Senna knows that something isn’t right. As her symptoms worsen, Senna will need to band together with the other participants to unravel the mystery of her present, and save her future

Reclaimed by Madeleine Roux. Releases in November 2020 from Ace Books. At first I thought this might be connected to Roux’s last release, Salvaged, but I don’t think it is. In any case, I love the sound of this!

  1. I’ve been so out of the loop when it comes to publishing news and upcoming releases ever since the shutdown blew up my work schedule, but I was surprised I actually know of all three this week, go me! It doesn’t seem like Reclaimed is related to Salvaged, but I’m not 100% sure. Either way, I didn’t love Salvaged,so I was going to wait and see with this one anyway 😛

Yeah, I know there were lots of mixed reviews for Salvaged. I’ll probably wait on this one as well.

  2. Ever since I read Lagoon I’ve had a desire to read more from Nnedi Okorafor, and Remote Control looks like another potential winner. I had to also add Reclaimed to by TBR from just the cover alone. Thankfully, the story sounds interesting, too. 🙂

I didn’t read Salvaged, but I know there were lots of mixed feelings about it. Thanks for visiting!

The Ganymede sounds so creepy!! And of course that makes me want to read it more!

  4. my heart leaped when I saw Reclaimed, but aww, it doesn’t look like it’s got anything to do with Salvaged. that title is such a tease!

the cover for Cast in Firelight is so dreamy, look at them POC leads!

Oh wow, Reclaimed sounds particularly good out of all these. Definitely adding that to the TBR.

  6. Cast in Firelight *definitely* sounds tropey, and that’s why I’m dying to read it. xD Sometimes tropes are a good thing! If they’re the right tropes and they’re done right. I was lucky enough to get an ARC already, and I’m looking forward to it.

Okay, Remote Control is going on my TBR *immediately*. Oh my gosh, that sounds so fantastic! I will forever read books that make Death a character, and I definitely need to read that one.
