The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “That which yields, is not always weak.” – A cover that represents distant lands.
So many choices for the theme this week, right? I decided to feature a literary novel that I read before I started blogging, by one of my favorite authors, Ann Patchett. State of Wonder takes place in the Amazon rain forest, and I thought it would be a perfect choice for the theme. Plus there are some exotic-looking covers! Take a look:
U.S. edition 2011 | U.S. paperback 2012 | UK edition 2011
Romanian edition 2013 | Dutch edition 2012 | Polish edition 2012
German edition 2012 | Czech edition 2012 | Russian edition 2014
Swedish edition 2013 | French edition (year?) | Chinese edition 2013
This is tough, I love a lot of these. I’ve narrowed it down to two, since I just can’t choose:
The choice of superimposing the image of the foliage on the woman’s back is very interesting, and adds a layer of mystery to the concept. I like it very much 🙂

I agree, to me that cover feels like the most exotic:-)
So many good choices, but the Swedish version is the one that caught my eye.
The Swedish edition is so different, and that red screams “danger!” to me, which makes sense because this book is full of it:-)
I haven’t read this book but I think I like the U.S. paperback 2012 the most. The colors are beautiful ♥

I think the US paperback is so pretty as well, I can’t help but love blue books:-)
I actually like the US 2012 Paperback version. I’ve never heard of this book so I’m completely clueless on how any of these covers tie in but there really are some pretty ones.
The story takes place in the rain forest, so the covers actually make sense with all the lush greenery.
That’s a pretty open prompt for this week. The Amazon sounds like a wonderful setting for a book. All these covers are so different! I like the variety. I definitely think my favorite is the Romanian one, since I love the different greens (and I guess yellow-green?).

That Romanian cover reminds me of a Henri Rousseau painting:-)
So many wonderful covers. I like your choices. I’m also drawn to the Dutch and Chinese covers.

It’s hard to pick, right?
I think I like the Dutch one, but your picks are also cool.
Ooh I like the Dutch one as well.
I feel like I say this every week, but there are elements that I love from each of them. I think you did a great job narrowing them down! And I LOVE Ann Patchett!
Glad to find another Patchett fan:-)
Beautiful covers! It’s actually hard to choose. I guess my favorite is the French edition.
The French one is sort of eerie, right?
I love the UK edition 2011! I want to read more Patchett but I’m worried all her books will be as emotionally traumatizing as Bel Canto… This one looks good!
It’s been a while since I read this, but I don’t think it was anywhere near as emotional. I just remember loving it!
I love the Polish edition, gorgeous cover. I’ve never read this book but I’ve heard enough good things about Ann Patchett I’d really like to give her a try one day. Which book would you recommend for a newcomer?
Oooh Bel Canto! It’s one of my all time favorite books.
Thanks much! Added to my list. 🙂
Oooh, I kind of love all of these covers except the red one. The rest would be hard to pick from for me!
The red one does sort of seem out of place, lol.
The UK 2011 one caught my eye right away. I love the reflection and just the overall serene vibe of it.
I love that one too. I don’t think there’s a bad cover in this bunch!
Great choice this week 😀 I like the Romanian edition 2013 cover best!
