Ten Books I’ve Recently Added to my TBR

I’m linking up with Top Ten Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Check out upcoming Top Ten themes on Jana’s blog!

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is sort of a super-sized Future Fiction! Ha ha. This week’s prompt is new books on your bookshelf, but I’ve decided to go with new additions to my TBR on Goodreads. These are some of the most recent additions, although I hate repeating myself, so you won’t see any Future Fiction picks on this list. Also, I never talk about books unless they already have a cover, so I’ll leave those off even if I just added them. Here we go!

The Ravens by Cass Morgan and Danielle Paige. Danielle Paige is the author of Dorothy Must Die, And Cass Morgan wrote The 100, so this could be interesting! College sorority and witch hijinks! Also, this is the first 2021 release I’ve shared! Crazy.

Corporate Gunslinger by Doug Engstrom. This is a June release from Harper Voyager, and I’m definitely going to try to score a review copy because it sounds like my kind of book:-D

Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas. Not my usual genre, but here’s another Gothic mystery that takes place in a university setting. I’m seeing lots of books like this lately, I guess it’s a trend? Trying to follow in the footsteps of The Secret History, perhaps?

Stormblood by Jeremy Szal. The cover is what initially attracted me to this book, but the story sounds really good as well. As far as I can tell, the only edition I see on Goodreads is the UK edition, so I’m not sure if this is slated to be released in the U.S. yet. Still, I like to keep tabs on books like this, which is why it’s on my list.

The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson. I’m not completely sold on this yet, but I do love the cover! I can’t tell from the description whether or not there are any speculative elements in this story, but I’m keeping my eye out for some early reviews.

Sin Eater by Megan Campisi. This is another book I wouldn’t normally add to my TBR, but I just love the cover, and the comparison of The Handmaid’s Tale and Alice in Wonderland has my interest piqued.

Unconquerable Sun by Kate Elliot. I can’t believe I’ve still never read anything by this author! This sounds like fun. Gender swapping, intergalactic space opera!

Ashlords by Scott Reintgen. I believe author K.D. Edwards recommended this book, which is why I immediately added it to my list. If it weren’t a January release, I would have seriously considered requesting a review copy. But it came too late to my attention, so at this point I’m not sure if I’ll have time to read it. But I love this cover!

The Princess Will Save You by Sarah Henning. The story sounds like it’s been done a thousand times before, but I love the art on the cover, and I’m always up for a plucky princess!

The Devil You Know by Mike Carey. For some reason I was perusing M.R. Carey’s backlist books on Goodreads, and realized there are a bunch of them I haven’t even heard of, let alone read! Writing under the name Mike Carey is this one, the first in a series of five books. This was written way back in 2006 but I’m still wanting to read it.

So there you have it, ten new books that have recently hit my radar. Do you have any of these on your TBR?

  1. The Handmaid’s Tale meets Alice in Wonderland? …I’m not sure how that would look like but what a premise.
And I haven’t read anything by Kate Elliot yet either, but Unconquerable Sun is on my TBR as well – it sounds amazing and there’s nothing I don’t love about the idea of political intrigue in space.
    Great list!

  2. Well Stormblood is getting added to my TBR too. Hopefully it gets a release date in the US! I’ll be bummed if it doesn’t.

Sin Eater also doesn’t sound like my usual type of book- but I saw it somewhere and wanted to keep tabs on it also.

  3. So many of these are on my TBR, too. I can’t wait to read Ashlords and The Year of the Witching, in particular! I hadn’t heard of The Ravens yet, but that one’s for sure going on my TBR. Sounds fantastic. I’m also interested in The Princess Will Save You, just because I’m a fan of inverting tropes.

  4. I can see why the cover of Stormblood attracted you. It immediately caught my attention, as well. Let’s hope the story lives up to it. 🙂

  5. Hmm, K.D. Edwards recommended Ashlords? I got the audiobook for review, I might have to bump that up now. I really disliked the last book I read by Reintgen which was the first of the Nyxia series so I didn’t continue, but everywhere I look Ashlords seems to be getting praise and from the description I think I’ll like it more than Nyxia.

I’ll be curious to see what you think. I probably won’t read it simply because I have other pressing books to read first.

Ah, I want to find time for rereads! Every year I say I’m going to do that but then suddenly the year’s over:-/

  6. Oh my god, I’ve hardly been able to even consider 2021 releases (other than the next installment in the Senlin Ascends series, of course) so kudos to you for being so ready, haha! 🙂 Catherine House is one I’ve had my eye on–it sounds so intriguing. I just finished an ARC of Sin Eater a couple weeks ago and it was so interesting. I’ve been side-eyeing its comparison to Alice in Wonderland a little bit, haha, but it’s a really neat story nonetheless and I found the concept of a Sin Eater fascinating. I love that cover for Ashlords so much! I hope you get to read and enjoy these!

  7. ooh, I like the sound of both of those university setting stories! I adored Ninth House so I’m game for more in that vein. 😀 loving the witch sorority in particular, oooh – but the 2021 release date hurts me a little..

  8. Hey! Thanks so much for giving STORMBLOOD a shout-out. We knew the cover would catch people’s eye. Hopefully the story justifies their attention.

The reason it doesn’t have a US listing is because the book hasn’t sold to a US publisher yet (something we soon hope to change). It’s available for pre-order in all Commonwealth territories (including Canada), but as far as the US goes, it’s up in the air whether it’ll be Gollancz’s US distributor publishing locally or another US-based publisher who do it themselves. It’s a complicated progress and, thankfully, it also isn’t my job.

However you manage to get your paws on it, I hope you enjoy it when you do.

Hey Jeremy, thanks for stopping by! I’ll be so curious to see what happens to your book as far as a US publishing deal goes. Good luck!
