The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “There are children here somewhere. I can smell them.” – A cover featuring children.
This should be a fairly easy theme for everyone, at least it was for me. I decided to feature The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, a classic fantasy story that had hundreds of editions for me to choose from! Here are some of my favorites:
U.S. Knopf edition 1996 | German edition 2002
U.S. Del Rey edition 1997 | Czech edition 2002
Indonesian edition 2018 | Russian edition 2018
U.S. Knopf paperback 2001 | Spanish edition 2013
This is tough! There are a few that I really love. But I think because it’s so different from the rest, I’m going to pick the Indonesian edition. There’s just something about the style and the color that pulls me in:
Yes, I love that Indonesian cover – it really stands out. It would be a close call between that and the first book (US) because I just love the polar bear’s face.

What a wonderful choice – this week’s FF has turned up some great books! I also was drawn to the Indonesian cover, but I also very much like the Russian edition – what a clever evocation of Lyra’s familiar… And it’s another entirely apt, yet original angle to the story:)
My favorite I think will always be the US Knopf edition. I bought it around the time it was released, and I still have it almost 30 years later. It holds a lot of sentimental value for me. (Plus- Iorek is my favorite!)
I have never read this but I think I’m going to have to.
I’m super attached to the ones with the polar bear but for some reason, I’m also loving the Russian edition. So it has to be my favorite, closely follower by US Knopf edition. Do you plan on watching the new series when it starts?
I love the Russian edition. I think it’s because of the golden color.
I love the Golden Compass and these covers are awesome.
I think the 2001 US one wins for me. I like the constellation design!
Well, i know there’s no kid on it, but the Russian is my fave… So cute, and great colours <3
My vote goes to both the first two covers, because they show the bear looking… well, bearish and at the same time somewhat cuddly. If that makes any sense… ๐ . ๐

The Golden Compass always seems to have so many pretty editions. I love the Indonesian one you chose, as well as the US paperback, the Russian, and the Spanish!
The minute I spotted the Indonesian cover I knew it was my favorite. But so many of these are fantastic too!

I like the Russian edition. ๐
Great choice! The one you picked jumped out at me right away, I think it’s the color and the art print style. I’m also quite fond of the one beside it ๐
The U.S. Knopf edition is my favorite, with the Indonesian a close second. I love this series!
I do love the collector/special editions of this author’s books. They look amazing, just like that Indonesian edition!! ๐

I love different components of each of them but Iโm drawn to the Russian cover because of that mink? Itโs just so different from the others. I love your choice, too, Tammy.
I agree with your favorite <3 That is a great cover ๐ I haven't seen it before
Oooh, good one for this topic. I love the one you picked, I think it’s the best of them.
