The Friday Face-Off: Wraparound Cover

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: A wraparound cover.

I almost skipped The Friday Face-Off this week, because I wasn’t sure where to go with the prompt. But after a little Googling, I decided to feature four gorgeous wraparound covers from books published by Subterranean Press. I’m also including links to the artists’ websites because, wow, these are all so beautiful, it’s only right to credit the artists. Here we go!

Kraken by Clive Barker

Artwork by Vincent Chong. Oh how I wish I owned this edition of Kraken! It’s simply gorgeous, right? I love how you can see much more of the overall picture when the full cover is displayed.

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

Artwork by Vincent Chong (again!). I own a copy of this edition, and I’m very happy to have it.

The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie

Artwork by Raymond Swanland. This one is stunning! I haven’t read this book, but just looking at this cover makes me want to.

Infernal Parade by Clive Barker

Artwork by Bob Eggleton. (I’m linking his Wikipedia page because wow, his website is pretty out of date!) I’ve always loved Eggleton’s artwork, and this is no exception.

So now you get to tell me which cover you like best! I’ll start: I really love Kraken, but for sheer beauty and artistic excellence, I’m going to have to pick The Heroes.

  1. They’re all great, but I had an emotional reaction to Station 11. It looks so bleak that I want to read the book to see if anyone survives . . . that’s an effective cover!

  2. These are all awesome but of course you know I’m in love with the Kraken one – how gorgeous. I took the one I knew of I had on my shelf and then just did other covers for it. I was afraid I was making it complicated too but I love the direction you took.

  3. I also almost wasn’t sure where to go with this week’s topic, either! I just love the covers Subterranean Press does, these are all so gorgeous. Station Eleven and The Heroes are particularly stunning.

  4. Wow! All these covers are super gorgeous! Its a toss up for me between Heros and Kraken <3 Great choices 😀 I'm glad you didn't skip this one!

  5. So many beauties. So difficult to choose. I love the Abercrombie cover though – although I also love Station Eleven. I can’t pick – they’re all gorgeous.
    Lynn 😀

  6. I just checked and I have Station Eleven. It’s the old cover with the tent in a field though. Got to add it to my summer reading list so I’ll get to it now.

  7. All of these are completely fabulous, but I am partial to the Kraken cover myself. Next pick would be Station Eleven I think.

  8. I love the cover for Station Eleven: that band of fading light against the encroaching darkness is very eye-catching, while the cover for The Heroes is indeed shouting “Abercrombie work!” in a loud voice… 😀

  9. I thought the Kraken cover was stunning with the tentacles curling over the front cover, but Station Eleven wins my vote. the front cover is a bit boring, tbh (though I love the coloring of the sky/stars), but the full artwork is beautiful! love the deer <3
