Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
I’ve shown some restraint on NetGalley the past few weeks, although I have to admit I have a bunch of requests still hanging out, waiting for approval (or not!). So just a few digital review books this time around. I’ve also got some cool purchases to share, and some exciting ARCs as well, so let’s hop to it!
Physical books for review:
I’ve been seeing lots of bloggers showing off their copies of The Bone Ships by R.J. Barker, so when a surprise copy arrived from Orbit I was extremely pleased:-) I’m so excited to finally read one of his books, I’ve heard amazing things.
I was so happy to get a finished copy of Three Laws Lethal by David Walton. I have loved the other books of his I’ve read (The Genius Plague and Supersymmetry) so of course I can’t wait for this one.
Huge thanks to Tor.com for a surprise copy of The Monster of Elendhaven by Jennifer Giesbrecht! This novella comes out in September, and I’ve already been hearing good things.
Perhaps the most exciting book mail I received recently was an ARC of The Girl with No Face by M.H. Boroson. I was happy with my digital galley but I couldn’t say “no” when a publicist from Talos offered me this beauty:-)
I won This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone from Bookish First! I was quite surprised how short this is, only about 200 pages, and it will be part of my July “plate” which means I hope to read it soon.
I already had a digital review copy of The Saturday Night Ghost Club by Craig Davidson, but I couldn’t turn down this physical copy when a publicist offered it to me. I’m also hosting a giveaway of the book on July 8th, so mark that on your calendars and plan on stopping by!
Big thanks to Orbit, Pyr, Tor.com, Talos, Saga Press and Penguin:-D
I was surprised and amused to receive a finished copy of Storm of Locusts by Rebecca Roanhorse from Gallery/Saga Press. Amused because I had requested it over three months ago, and also it came out back in April. But I really couldn’t be happier, I am thrilled to finally have an excuse to continue this exciting series!
The lovely Paola from Orbit sent me this surprise paperback release of The Sisters of the Winter Wood by Rena Rossner! She also included a hand-drawn/written note in gold ink, and the whole package (wrapped in a bow and inside a sparkly gold mailing envelope!) was just beautiful:-)
This is another copy of Empress of Forever by Max Gladstone. I had won a copy on Instagram and then I received a surprise copy from the publisher as well. I am looking forward to diving in! Also, if anyone in the U.S. wants my extra copy let me know!
Finally, a surprise from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers showed up, a finished copy of Rise, the sequel to Rule by Ellen Goodlett. To be honest I’ve never heard of this series before, but it sounds good and this book is lovely!
Thank you Saga Press/Gallery, Paola from Orbit, Tor Books and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers:-D
Digital books for review:
The Girl the Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young is the second book in her series after Sky In the Deep, which I loved. I believe this is more of companion novel, so even if you haven’t read the first book, I think you can start this first.
A Song for a New Day by Sarah Pinsker. I’ve been hearing Pinsker’s name thrown around a lot lately and so I’m glad to be able to read something from her. Music and speculative fiction are two things I love to see mashed together, so I have high hopes for this!
The Imaginary Corpse by Tyler Hayes sounds so different and bizarre, that I have a feeling I’m going to love it! Click on the link if you don’t know what it’s about. Let’s just say: a dinosaur detective who is actually an imaginary friend.
It’s hard to tear my eyes away from the cover of The Resurrectionist of Caligo by Wendy Trimboli, but I have to admit the story is also calling to me.
Finally, I was sent a NetGalley invite to read The Nobody People by Bob Proehl. It was pitched to me as “for fans of Blake Crouch,” and since I just read Recursion by the very same author, I could not turn this down:-)
Big thanks to Wednesday Books, Berkley, Angry Robot and Del Rey!
Purchases:
A couple of exciting purchases arrived recently: First, Subterranean Press had a rare 50% off sale (I think they do it once a year to clear out old stock) and I was lucky enough to score a signed limited edition of Sea of Rust by C. Robert Cargill. I passed on it when it was first announced because it was too expensive, so I guess good things do sometimes come to those who wait:-) I also bought myself a “reading copy” (collectors out there will understand what that means, no way am I going to actually read this baby!) because I have a personal reading challenge I’ll be launching next week and this book is part of that. Stay tuned…
I also was super excited to receive my pre-order reward for Aurora Rising: Memento by Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman, a prequel short story to their Illuminae series! I haven’t read it yet but I hope to soon, anyone else out there get this?
The Sisters of the Winter Wood looks so beautiful!! I really want to read that one.

It was really good, Stephanie!
I can’t wait for the digital edition of The Bone Ships to be announced on the Orbit newsletter: RJ Barker is an amazing writer and I’m beyond curious to see what this new story is about. And… an Illuminae prequel novella?? This is the first I’ve heard about it and I need to set my greedy 😀 hands on it as soon as I can! 🙂

Momento was a preorder incentive if you bought Aurora Rising, but hopefully they will be offered again for readers who missed the preorder.
I have an eARC of The Girl with No Face and I’m dying to read it – I can’t believe it was an auto approval book for me on NetGalley! It’s going to be great!
Oh cool, I hope we both love it:-)
I prefer that Sea of Rust cover to the ones I usually see.
I’ll look out for reviews of Bone Ships. Like the cover and the premise sounds interesting.
This is my favorite Sea of Rust cover too, although I do like the U.S. one, it uses the same color scheme.
I had not seen anything about The Bone Ships – add to my TBR! Already had my eye on the new Max Gladstone, mainly because I had not read anything by that author, but always wanted to, so starting with a new series or standalone seems may get me reading. So if you are still looking for a home for that extra copy, I am interested.

Done! Email me your address Riley, and I’ll mail it out ( booksbonesbuffy (at)att.net)
I dunno how to feel about The Saturday Night Ghost Club. I am from “The Falls” so I’m curious….. LOL Sketchy! Makes me nervous!
Ha ha, now I’m even more curious!
Good haul, a lot of things I’m curious about! I think THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE THE TIME WAR is something I’ll pick up down the line, seems like a definite mood read.
I think you’re right, it does seem a bit unusual, so you may need to be in the right mood.
Fantastic haul Tammy – especially that Sea of Rust.
Lynn 😀
Super excited for Sea of Rust, and it’s my favorite of the two covers:-)
A Bunch of cool covers and books I haven’t heard of! 🙂 Hope you love them all!
Thanks Stormi!
I’m hoping to dive into Three Laws Lethal very soon, and I’m also planning on bringing The Monster of Elendhaven along with a couple of other Tor.com novellas on my vacation that’s coming up because it seems I’ll be running around a lot and will need some quick bite-sized reads 😀 Also I was soooo tempted by the new Adrienne Young on NetGalley but my NetGalley stats are really starting to tank these days, lol….so I might wait to request that in audio instead.
Ha ha, I honestly never check my NetGalley stats. I guess I’m supposed to do that, right? I figure if publishers see me posting reviews regularly, I should be fine:-)
Fantastic haul! The Girl the Sea Gave Back is one I recently got too and can’t wait to read. I think you’re right about it being more of a companion novel to Sky in the Deep. The Girl with No Face sounds amazing too. Hope you enjoy all of your new reads!
Suzanne @ The Bookish Libra recently posted…Can’t Wait Wednesday – THE STARLESS SEA by Erin Morganstern
Thanks Suzanne! I’m glad we both get to read The Girl the Sea Gave Back:-)
What an amazing haul! So many of these I’d love to read. I need to get my hands on Memento and The Saturday Night Ghost Club looks super fun.

I can’t wait to read Memento, it’s short so I really have no excuse:-)
I’m excited for The Girl The Sea Gave Back. And I still need to read Roanhorse.
Empress of Foreever hasd a cool cover 🙂

Roanhorse is definitely worth checking out! I hope I find time soon to read this sequel.
Some lovely books and that edition of Sea of Rust is awesome. Now I’m curious about what you have planned. I didn’t know The Imaginary Corpse was up on Netgalley but I just went and requested it. However, that publishing house doesn’t like me so we will see 🙂 Actually they don’t know me so I’m sure it’s not personal. Looks like some good reading in your future!
I hope you get The Imaginary Corpse! I’m posting about my reading challenge post this Tuesday:-)
I can’t wait to read The Girl the Sea Gave Back <3 I hope it's amazing! Happy reading 🙂
Oh my gosh, that copy of Sea of Rust, love it! I read that last year and totally fell in love with it. Such a great find! Looks like you have lots of great reading ahead of you. Am especially looking forward to The Girl With No Face. Enjoy!
Great haul! I really loved Storm of Locusts, I thought it was better than Trail of Lightning — I need to pick up a finished copy at some point now that I think about it. I also won This Is How You Lose the Time War from Bookish First and am reading it now, about haolfway through it and it’s strange but beautiful. It is a lot more cerebral than I anticipated! Happy reading!
