The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “Coraline opened the box of chocolates. The dog looked at them longingly.” – A cover featuring something sweet.
I had a couple of books in mind for this prompt. When I think of “something sweet” I immediately think of chocolate, and the first book I thought of was Chocolat by Joanne Harris, a book I read quite a long time ago. There are some really bad covers out there, but some good ones too! I only picked the good ones;-)
Black Swan edition 2000 | Penguin Books edition 2000
Transworld Digital edition 2010 | Russian edition 2013
Swedish edition 2012 | Lithuanian edition 2018
Dutch edition 2007 | Romanian edition 2006
My two favorites are the Swedish and Lithuanian editions, which are completely different from each other! I love the idea of the chocolate bean on the cover of the Swedish edition, but today Lithuania wins:
I really like the Romanian edition! it makes me hungry and nostalgic for these chocolates boxes, hehe
I also love the Romanian edition. I now want a box of chocolates too. I really like your cover too with those huge broken chunks of chocolate.

I think my favorite is the Black Swan edition 2000, but I also love the Lithuania edition.
Also- this post is making me want chocolate. Although I haven’t read the book (or seen the movie).
I’ve never read this book but if I picked it up, I’d be the Dutch cover I’d want. It’s kind of simple and underwhelming but the rose catches my eye. Can you believe I participated this week? However I focused on the wrong word in the prompt – imagine that. But hey, dogs are sweet right?
It’s a great book for this week’s subject, Tammy:)). And what a lovely range of covers… my favourite – by quite a long way – is the Dutch cover. I just love that gold lettering against the chocolate brown velvet, so very classy! While the gold-wrapped sweets and that lovely rose provides just the right pop of colour…
Great choice for this topic! I also think I like the Lithuanian edition the most.
I like the Lithuanian and Romanian ones!
Something about the Romanian cover just speaks to me!

You are right, there are a lot of good covers, but I think my favorite is the Russian edition. I haven’t read or watched the movie yet, but I have heard good things!

Such different versions! I agree with your fav
My favorite is the Lithuanian edition. It might be those chunks of dark chocolate… Gotta run now, I’m heading downstairs to grab a bar. Love that dark chocolate!
I’ve never read the book, or watched the movie. Might have to give one or both a try.
I read this book quite a while ago too, but it came right to mind for me, I guess because it made a very strong impression! I wanted to try and find something else, but I just kept coming back to this one, plus it has some very nice covers!
I watched the movie with Johnny Depp and I really liked it. As for the book cover, I like the Romanian edition 2006 with all the chocolates in a box.
I love this book choice for this prompt, Tammy, and there’s an element (or more) I love in each cover. I love the one you ultimately chose, too. Such an interesting take to the eye, that one.
I like the Swedish and Black Swan covers, but the Penguin Books edition 2000 works for me too.
Wow, these are look so different. The Lithuanian and the Black Swan are my favorites, mainly just because I love the background color on each.

I like the Russian and Lithuanian, even though those are very different too. The Lithuanian just has such a nice photo and color palette and design though!
This one has so many great covers!
