The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “Simples” – A favorite fantasy cover.
Whenever I think of favorite fantasy authors, I always think of Alice Hoffman. Her genre is more “magical realism,” but I think that’s an important sub-genre in the realm of fantasy books. I chose The Rules of Magic this week, and even though I could only find five covers I like, I think they give you a good idea of the feeling you get when you read this. Here they are:
U.S. Edition 2017 (Simon & Schuster)
UK edition 2018 | Dutch edition 2019
UK Kindle edition (Scribner UK) | Russian edition 2018
I love all these covers, and the first three in particular really give you a retro vibe (part of the story takes place in the 60s). But I think my favorite is the Dutch cover, there’s something about the yellow and the girl peeking through the flowers that just makes me happy:
This is a tough choice! Usually they are all pretty similar but these are all really different. I think I like the Dutch cover best too.
What an excellent choice, Tammy:)). I love them all – but for me I think it’s a tie between the US and UK, with the US cover just edging it…
We’ve got the same favourite, the colours and blurriness is just perfect together.
I think either the Dutch or UK edition.
I agree, the Dutch edition is my favorite too!
They are all lovely. I’m going with the UK 2018 edition.
I like that one, as well as the Russian edition!
Yes, I like your choice – both the colors and the image make it stand out from the rest. The UK edition comes a close second, but the Dutch cover is without doubt this week’s winner .
The Dutch cover is loverly! Arrrr!
x The Captain
I like the UK Kindle edition for its minimalist design!
I love this book so much and all of the covers are lovely. I like the first one, mainly just because it’s the one I own but the Dutch cover is beautiful too.
Oooh, I kind of like all of these! Too hard to choose this week.
I agree with your choice, but I love it because her freckles are adorable <3
Love this book and also the cover you chose. it was the one that stood out for me which is unusual because I’m not usually a fan of photographed real life people on covers – this one just really works for me though.

I liked the style of the article! I like such books a lot. I also enjoy Mistborn, Diplomat of Uram, Steelheart… The usual suspects.
