The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “bibbity, bobbity, boo” – A cover that features magical things.
Of course, Harry Potter was the first thing I thought of for this week’s prompt, but I’ve done several HP posts in the past and wanted to do something different. I decided to feature A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab, and the “magical thing” on the cover is Kell’s wonderful, magical coat! Here are some covers, take a look:
Tor Books edition 2015 | Titan Books edition 2015
Italian edition 2017 | Indonesian edition 2019
Bulgarian edition 2017 | Russian edition 2017
French edition 2017 | Farsi (Iranian) edition 2017
This is tough. For me, it’s a toss-up between the Italian and Indonesian covers. I love the variance of the Italian edition on the Titan Books cover, I think it’s punchier and better balanced than the Titan one, but I also love the movement of the Indonesian cover. Ultimately, Indonesia wins!
I like the UK Titan cover but I also think that’s the one I see the most. I do love a good black/white/red cover combo!
I quite like them all. The last two somehow doesn’t fit the theme so much (like they are too much like cartoons), but are still pretty.
My fave is the Bulgarian one!

I also like all of them. However, my favorite is the first one, the TOR cover. The Titan edition also has the various London’s under Kell’s feet which is neat.
Great choice of book, Tammy – I’m struck by the wide range in this week’s FF, which is great. My least favourite is the UK one – I’ve never liked it much because it simply disappears as a thumbnail. While I love the Titan edition, it’s the Indonesian cover that is my favourite – the drama of that mid-leap is just so eye-catching!
I like several of these but I agree with your choice. Everything is set up nicely on the cover.

Ooh, a magic cloak – I still have to read Schwab!
That’s the very cover I choose when I was scrolling down – I can’t put my finger on what it is but something really appeals to me about it and I really like the font.
Lynn 😀
I like both the Titan books and the Italian edition: they share that figure in black with the red cape that somehow reminds me of Dr. Strange and therefore makes me smile… 🙂

I love Kell’s coat and I love all of the different covers for this book, they’re always so nea Indonesia’s cover is really nice, I like how they put the city map on his coat. I think the Bulgarian edition is really cool also, though the red of his coat is a bit brighter than I imagine it, haha.
I kind of like that French one on the left but his eyes are freaking me out!
That is the most striking one to me too! And it’s interesting how so many of the designers, across international markets, decided to go with the red/white/black theme.
I’ve always loved the Titan 2015 edition cover because red, black, and white is my fave color combo, and I love the silhouette. BUT that is because I had not seen some of these others, they’re gorgeous! I have to agree with your choice, everything about the Indonesian cover is amazing. But the French cover is completely my kinda cover with that art, so it’s a very close second!

I like most of these actually.. white black and red are great colors to string together. I think it’s a toss up between Italian 2017 and Titan books 2015, but the Bulgarian one is cool too!
Gosh, they are all so good, Tammy! I love the one you chose though. It’s much more dynamic than the copy I have.
I like that Farsi edition a lot- it’s kinda different

I really love that Indonesian version, wow!
