Over-Booked [101] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Big thanks to all the publishers who sent books and digital approvals to me these last few weeks! I’ll admit I went overboard on digital galleys this time, but these are spread out over several months so it’s not as bad as it looks:-D Here are the latest books to make their way into my home:

Physical books for review:

I was surprised and thrilled to receive a finished copy of one of my favorite books of the year so far, A Boy and his Dog at the End of the World! (Link to my review if you haven’t read it yet) Complete with themed postcards! Thank you Orbit, I’m so happy to have this sitting on my shelves.

And with regards to the ongoing hilarity over my request for Westside by W.M. Akers (and someday I will do a post on funny and unusual interactions with publicists!), I received another copy, this time a bound galley from the publisher. The funny part about this book is that I now have four different editions of the ARC, lol. This came from a publicist two months after I sent an email request! I just don’t know what to think about that. But nonetheless, my thanks goes out to Harper Voyager for such a cool ARC:-)

Last year I read and enjoyed Priest of Bones by Peter McLean, and I was excited to get a copy of book two in his War for the Rose Throne series, Priest of Lies. Isn’t the cover pretty?? Big thanks to Ace Books:-D

A surprise from Tor Teen showed up, Heartwood Box by Ann Aguirre. I remember spotting this on Goodreads and immediately adding it to my list. I’m really looking forward to it! Thanks Tor Teen!

Five of these six books were surprise copies! First up is Kellanved’s Reach by Ian C. Esslemont, book #3 in his Path to Ascendancy series. I believe Tor sent me book #2 as well, now all I need is the first book and I can check out this series! I’ve heard good things about it. Next, Knight by Timothy Zahn, book #2 in The Sybil’s War series. Now that I think about it, Tor sent me the first book in this series last year! I’m on a roll, I’m almost ready to do some binge reading. Thank you Tor!

A publicist from Cutting Block Books contacted me about The Seven Deadliest, a horror anthology centered around the seven deadly sins. I recognize a few names, but some of them are new to me. I’m looking forward to diving into some short horror fiction! Thank you Cutting Block Books:-D

I did not expect to get a copy of Ed McDonald’s Crowfall, which is another book #3. Since I haven’t started the series, this was quite a surprise. However, I do have copies of the first two books, so again, it’s just a matter of finding time and I can binge read this series. Let me know if I should!

I think there’s a theme going on here…Yet another book in a series I have not started, although I seriously cannot wait to read the Hell Divers series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith. Blackstone Publishing has been so good to me. I know for sure they’ve sent me books 2, 3, 4 and now book 5, Captives. After hearing a few blogging friends rave about these (I’m looking at you, Kristen and Daniela!), I know I’ll get to this at some point. Huge thanks to Blackstone!

Finally, a book from a publisher I don’t normally work with, but wow does this sound tempting: The Time Collector by Gwendolyn Womack is a time travel/mystery story that I can see myself enjoying. Thanks to Picador for the copy!

Digital books for review:

First off, a beautiful quartet of upcoming Tor.com novellas, all of which I’m really looking forward to reading!

Tade Thompson follows up his The Murders of Molly Southbourne with the sequel, The Survival of Molly Southbourne. Such a strange and disturbing tale, I can’t wait to see how the next story unfolds.

I recently featured Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh on a Future Fiction post, so I immediately hit the “request” button when I saw this on NetGalley.

Longer by Michael Blumlein sounds a little strange but also really good. Plus bonus: Daryl Gregory has a blurb on the cover. I’m sold!

And Her Silhouette, Drawn in Water by Vylar Kaftan has a cover that’s hard to resist, and I love the idea of telepaths stuck on a prison planet.

Big thanks to Tor.com!

I was thrilled to be approved for A Cosmology of Monsters by Shaun Hamill after featuring it on Future Fiction and spotting it on NetGalley. It sounds like fun!

I saw Deception Cove by Owen Laukkanen on another blog and immediately added it to my TBR. It’s a story about an ex-Marine with PTSD and her service dog Lucy.  I don’t usually read books from Mulholland Books but they just auto-approved me on NetGalley so maybe I’ll be reading more of them soon!

Finally, I couldn’t resist downloading two new Harper titles when I saw them on Edelweiss, both of which I’ve featured on Future Fiction: Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin, and Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron.  Both come out in the Fall so I don’t feel too bad adding them to my review pile in April:-D

But wait, there’s more! My buddy Lesley at Apex Books asked if I’d like to read two upcoming titles, and I have a hard time turning down anything from Apex. First up is Coil by Ren Warom, which sounds like an excellent sci-fi noir. It’s not up on Goodreads yet, so I’m linking to Apex’s website. I cannot wait to read this!

Next is Pimp My Airship by Maurice Broaddus. In addition to that fabulous title, this steampunk fantasy actually sounds like it’s got some humor. This is a May title so I’m going to try to read it next month.

With thanks to the kind folks at Big Honcho Media, I received this surprise box promoting The Devouring Gray by Christine Lynn Herman. In addition to a beautiful finished hardcover is a candle, smart wallet, and a Devouring Gray tank top! I hope to find time to read this because it’s been on my TBR for a long time.

Purchased:

As soon as I read The Princess and the Fangirl by Ashley Poston, I rushed out and bought finished hardcovers of both books (including Geekerella, the first book in the series.) I had seen the “unwrapped” book on Instagram and knew I had to own it. Look how pretty the two books are without the dust jackets!

And that’s my haul this week. Um, I have a lot of reading to do:-D Let me know if you plan to read any of these books!

I love that cover too! And I’ve been seeing great reviews for The Devouring Gray, and the Stranger Things comparison doesn’t hurt:-)

I’m sure I’ll tell the story when I put my review of Westside up, lol. Or maybe it’s just funny to me ha ha!

  4. I have an advance copy of Crowfall and I’m really looking forward to it. I requested A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World. It probably won’t come through, but I think I’m going to have to buy it anyway.

  5. I read The Fortune Teller by Gwendolyn Womack and really enjoyed it so I’m definitely going to be picking up The Time Collector. I also got The Devouring Gray! It hasn’t been getting the best of reviews but I’m actually still very interested in reading this. It sounds great. 🙂 You really do have a lot of reading to do. lol

  7. you got Serpent & Dove, aaagh, so jealous! and that Devouring Gray pack is super cool, what a cute idea <3 I haven't read it yet, but I'm super keen to get started soon, I love the Stranger Things vibes 😀

  8. Some lovely books here. I really hope Heartwood Box is good as it’s definitely one I want to pick up. I was really planning on picking up A Boy and His Dog next, but due to circumstances, I think it’s going to get put on hold for a tad. Hope you love all of these. I’m also hoping I can get back in the reading grove soon. Basically I just want to stare at mindless TV right now.

Totally understand, Barb. When you’re ready, I’m sure you’ll read a Boy and His Dog. Plus, it’s very much a feel good story so it might be good for you.
