The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “Two little fishes and a mamma fishy too.” – A cover featuring fish or other sea creatures.
I had a couple of books I wanted to use this week, but I settled on Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor. This science fiction/fantasy story takes place off the coast of Nigeria, and even though I could only find four covers, there are some sea creatures on a couple of them! Take a look:
Hodder & Stoughton UK edition 2014 | Saga Press US 2015 edition
Polish edition 2015 | German edition 2016
Wow, this is tough. I love all of these except for the Saga Press edition, which doesn’t do much for me. But the other three? All gorgeous in their own way. But I’m going to pick a favorite! Although the German edition is lovely, I’m going to pick the UK edition, simply because it captures the mood of the story the best, IMO.
I really enjoyed Lagoon. I’d pick the UK cover as my favorite, though I may be biased since that’s the edition I have. I also really like the Polish and German covers. I need to pick another book of hers to try, any recommendations? I was thinking the Binti series.
I enjoyed Binti, although I’ve only read the first two novellas. Totally worth picking up!
These really are beautiful covers, Tammy! I’m with you on that UK edition, though, and I love the greens in that.
I’m always drawn to blue or green covers, so it’s no surprise that the green one is the best:-)
I’m going with your choice too. Though all of these work for me:)

They all have good points about them, sometimes it’s so hard to choose!
What a great choice of book and I definitely agree with your cover. I love that cover.
Lynn 😀
Me too, I think it really tells the story.
I like the same one you do! It gets points for tentacles!!! LOL 🙂
Yes, everyone loves tentacles! Why is that?
I love the surfacing bubbles in the Saga Press cover: there is something mysterious and somewhat scary in the starkness of that image… 🙂

It’s not my favorite, but I do see what you mean. It’s a bit unsettling!
I haven’t read this one – but it’s a great book to choose for this week’s topic, Tammy:)). And I thoroughly agree with your favourite – who could resist those tentacles?
There’s something about tentacles, right??:-)
Great choice! I really like the cover you chose.:) And no, I haven’t read Lagoon.

It’s a strange book, but it really grabbed me for some reason:-)
Ooh these are some seriously neat covers! I also love them all except the Saga one (it’s so lackluster compared to the others!), but that UK one is really creative and stunning. I really like the color of it, too.

Yeah, I don’t care for the Saga cover, they could have done so much more with it.
I love that one as well because TENTACLES! Was there ever any other option. I read Akata Witch by this author and loved it which reminds me I need to get busy on the second one.
Yes, tentacles are always a good thing:-)
I’d have picked the same one as you did. It looks soooo coool! 😮

Ha ha, yes it’s a cool book and a cool cover!
I really like the colors on the Polish edition. And reminds me, I still need to read this book!
You should, it’s very strange but in a good way!
Lagoon is such a great choice, I loved that book–it was so very weird. I agree with your pick of covers too, that’s my fave.
Ha ha it was weird, right?
We have the same exact thoughts this time lol. I agree completely with your ranking! That first one is great and although I haven’t read this, it does seem like it would fit the story.!

It totally fits the story, and it’s one of the reasons I wanted to read this book:-)
