Over-Booked [96] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It’s my first book haul post of the year, and I have some new review books to share, as well as some amazing purchases I made right before Christmas!

Physical Books for Review:

Thanks to Orbit for one of my most anticipated books of 2019, A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World by C.A. Fletcher. I’ve already read a couple of glowing reviews, and although this doesn’t come out until April, I doubt I’ll be able to wait that long!

Smoke & Summons by Charlie N. Holmberg was a surprise arrival from 47North via Wunderkind PR, and it looks like fun! Plus bonus points for surprising me with a book I’ve never heard of before, lol.

Another surprise arrived from DAW Books, Finder by Suzanne Palmer. I had just recently discovered this and added it to my TBR, so I was thrilled when it showed up!

Big thanks to Orbit, 47North, Wunderkind PR and DAW!

And I actually won an Instagram giveaway! I participated in the #strangestarsandskies challenge, hosted by @scifiandscary, and one of my posts was randomly chosen as a winner. I got to pick a book from The Book Depository, and since I’ve been seeing so much blogger love lately for Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series, I decided to get the first book, Rosemary and Rue! Huge thanks to @scifiandscary:-)

Purchased:

Well, I went on a bit of a spending spree last month, but I HAD to have all three of these books. First up, Kingdom of Needle and Bone by Mira Grant, a signed, limited edition from Subterranean Press. It’s a lovely book, and I hope to fit in some time to read this short novella.

Next up, the SPECIAL limited edition of Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames from Anderida Books in the UK. I’m really sad that I never bought the matching Kings of the Wyld (I guess I didn’t know about it), which also has sprayed edges. But I’m happy to have this copy. See below for the gorgeous red page edges!! AND a bonus came with it, six character cards drawn by artist Scott McCauley, aren’t they cool? And this book isn’t sold out yet, so head on over to the link if you want your own copy!!

Another pricey but totally worth it purchase, the limited edition of The Gutter Prayer by Gareth Hanrahan from Goldsboro Books (also in the UK). This book also has beautiful blue sprayed edges!

Finally, Peter Tieryas, author of one of my favorite books of the year, Mecha Samurai Empire, sent me a Christmas greeting! How sweet is that?? Also, it’s the first time that’s happened to me:-)

Beautiful sprayed edges!

Digital books for review:

I was asked to be on the blog tour for Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan, and I couldn’t be more excited. My tour stop isn’t until April, so look for my review in a few months! Big thanks to Wednesday Books:-)

Never-Contented Things by Sarah Porter is a book that takes place in the fae realm, and I think because I just finished The Wicked King I’m dying to read another fae story! This one sounds really good, although the ratings on Goodreads so far are making me a little nervous… Thank you Tor Teen!

The Rosewater Insurrection by Tade Thompson is the sequel to Thompson’s wonderful Rosewater, and I’m excited to dive in. Thanks to Orbit for the review copy!

And finally, The Lesson by Cadwell Turnbull was an impulse download. I saw it on NetGalley, and the publisher has me on auto-approved, so I made a snap decision to check it out. It’s set in the Virgin Islands, which is a location you don’t see much of in SFF. It sounds pretty good! Thank you to Blackstone Publishing!

And that’s my book haul this week! Let me know if you plan to read any of these books:-D

  1. Ah, you are going to start on the October Daye series!!!! I can’t wait to hear what you think about it – book 1 might not seem so… ground breaking, but be patient and you will be rewarded with the following volumes 🙂
These days I’m reading The Gutter Prayer and I find it quite intriguing: the background is more than fascinating…

That’s what I’ve heard, that the series starts out just OK but gets better. I’m really looking forward to it:-) I hope to start the Gutter Prayer soon, hopefully it will be my next read.

  2. Finder and The Lesson caught my eye, just added them to my TBR. It feels like its been too long since I’ve read a good science fiction book.

Thanks Bonnie! I’m glad to hear October Daye is one of those series that gets stronger and stronger, can’t wait.

Thanks Jennifer! Rosewater is such a unique story, I can’t wait to dive into the sequel. I hope you enjoy it!

Sub Press has the most beautiful books, and I have absolutely no restraint with them, unfortunately:-)

  3. Ouuuu!
Finder sounds like an thrill ride and a half. Looking forward to your review!
I’m tempted to buy The Gutter Prayer just because of the blue pages! Though I do want to read it.

  4. I was pretty surprised and excited about Finder and Smoke & Summons too! I also found out the latter is also a First Reads freebie if you’re an Amazon Prime member, so I grabbed the ebook and audio so that I might get to read/listen to it sooner. And that’s a beautiful edition of The Gutter Prayer!

  5. Marian Parsons

I just finished Smoke & Summons and liked it enough to pre-order the next book in the series.

  6. Some great looking books. I don’t know how I missed your post earlier but I did. It was one of those weekends. I love sprayed edges on books. They add so much to them. I vow to read the Eames books this year. You know I can’t wait for The Boy and his Dog book. I think I’m going to read my digital arc during my They Call It Puppy Love Challenge in February – you should too. It’s totally laid back 🙂

  7. One I get job and an income (and stop acquiring MORE student loans), those Subterranean Press edition are something I really would love to get into collecting. Plus, these would actually be more of an investment and may actually go up or at least hold in price – unlike 99% of the other books I buy XD
